Indian Education
by Subrahmanya Prabhakar on Jun 05, 2010 06:03 PM  Permalink

It is very unfortunate that we do not even interested to impart education to our next generation by taking the plea of ‘fall in educational standards with increasing number of student intake’. When there is no standard, where is questing of fall in standards! We should learn not only to cultivate education but also need to learn harvesting its outcome. Even though we claim that we make selections, most of our screening procedures are designed for elimination process. Many a times we see rating of educational institutions in casual / popular magazines. The rating agencies credit worthiness itself is questionable. The accreditation panels should be constituted a randomized fashion in multifold (including blindfold panels) to minimize the bending the facts. We should learn to improve ourselves but not to learn to live with mediocre attitude.

India has no plan to upgrade education!
by vidyasagar on Aug 27, 2009 12:01 PM  Permalink

Educational institutions have become a successful business. There is no law to check the forcible donations and only those have can provide good eduction to their wards. Government eductional institutions are pathetic to say the least. And they have too many political interference.

Higher Education in India?
by Ramakrishna on Mar 20, 2006 09:48 PM  Permalink

Dear Prof. Kak,

Thanks for your brilliant article about higher education and academic research in India. Although the rankings seem little biased, there is a truth about backwardness in higher education & research to some extent. One of the main reasons for this is lack of quality politics of India. e.g. previous NDA HRD minister did his best to provide infrastructure & access to various international journals for the betterment of research, but finally he himself lost the election. Indian policies are dominated by attractive political promises and subsidies. Moreover, how many people would bother about the facilities & education in universities in the election promises? There is still lack of awareness and importance about the quality of education even in educated people. Its high time that our government should focus on providing infrastructure for universities rather than minority vote bank politics.

Whither education Raj?
by Dr.Mrs. Usha K. Sharma on Jan 03, 2006 08:27 PM  Permalink

Its such a crying shame, how complacent we can become.
Typical "Koop Mandukaas" or frogs in the proverbial wells, admiring our personal patch of sky and thinking we hav hte whole world accounted for.
We are armchair philosophers at best, escapists at the worst, who refuse (with rare individual exceptions) to face the fact that the world is passing us by in standards of excellence, and for this to happen in the field of education is simply disastrous.
The policy of reservation is only going to create academic cripples, always whining and demanding specialised treatment, and not equipping them for tough competition outside this secluded and secure dreamworld. This suits all votebank hungry policy makers, and the beneficiaries of their policies are lulled into believing that it is for their own good, while actually it just erodes their capabilities even before they develop.
While the world passes us by.

Are multi degreed educationists not capable of imparting value based education?
by B.Gautam on Dec 29, 2005 03:11 AM  Permalink

Present system of democracy, though could have been selected at a time when majority of general population was innocent, comparatively honest, morally sound with good integrity, it lost its power to deliver peace, tranquility and happiness as is evident today!
The growth of intelligence along with time has corroded the values as its negativity is found to deliver temporary happiness through luxury acquired by quick wrongful means! It is the education in right perspective which can drive the intelligence in the right direction to accomplish an everlasting bliss of peace and happiness! Impaired education is entirely responsible for the negative intelligence that lead to todays chaos and miseries due to large scale nepotism, violence and crime! We see several highly educated persons such as judges, lawyers, doctors, engineers, vice chancellors and administrators etc., besides the politicians irrespective of their party affiliations into criminal nets! The system of democracy remains same but the values have changed and hence people too!
Several eminent luminaries like late Dr. Albert Einstein and late Dr. S. Radhakrishnan etc., did assert about the faulty education which did not teach anything beyond 2+2=4, though the life science sees many changes in knowledge entirely different from such lessons! The omission and absence of prioritization of such valued knowledge is totally responsible for present sad state of affairs! It is therefore necessary not immediate up gradation but a total revision of the curricula and syllabi of right from basic and primary education levels to include and prioritize the values and culture as the predominant aspects, especially at basic and primary levels, though prominence of values will run till highest education levels too!
Why are such steps not yet taken ? Are multi degreed educationists totally absent or vested interests prevent such changes or there is a heavy brain drain in the country?

Education Raj and Way to tackle it
by cirus on Dec 27, 2005 10:42 PM  Permalink

I don't know whether the parameters for becnhmarking any institution given by the article is totaly correct or not but the actual scenario of Indian Education is not so good. Especially at the graduate and post graduate level India lags in research. This is even admitted by professors at IIT, who say that Govt. is doing very less towards improvement of education.Education and university rank is not measured ony by the subjects taught but its output in terms of patents and innovations. All this require grants, equipments and strong encouragement. With economy improving I don\\\'t see grants as major problem but believe that promotion of interests and maintainence need to be fostered in order to see good things.I propose a solution of inter state competition just as US does such that there will be productivity in terms of skillful manpower.Secondly, reservations should be banned at all levels.Instead, moral and financial support to disabled and genuine weaker section should be given. This will create a sense of belongingness and healthy environment for competition.

Whither Education Raj?
by Satish on Dec 23, 2005 10:05 AM  Permalink

I guess an university should not only be graded according to the Research but also the quality of undergrad courses. I feel IISc is placed in a wrong position. Its one of the premier research institute in the world. I don't know if this article is written to demoralize the indian education system or a warning sign for the future, but, I don't agree with the ranking.

Whither Education Raj
by s subramanyan on Dec 23, 2005 09:35 AM  Permalink

The author has done valuable service to the cause of higher education by focusing on the issue for the information of the general public. The blame attaches to the government, university adminsitration and the educationists themselves. We are slowly destroying the good basae our adminsitrators had built up in the past. The entry of politics and the ideological moorings of the professors themselves are a root cause. Indulge in politics but do not ignore the administration of the educational institutions. Use the moneys granted usefully. I wonder whether the professors are abreast of the latest books in the field and order them for the universities. If you have any doubt, just pick your field, select a book that has just been published and make anb inquiry with the university. Inviariably you will be disappointed.

Unless there is a public outcry nothing will happoen to improve matters. That is our lot in the country.
