ru mad? what kind of reporter rediff hires... do they have lot of miney to waste..? i can give 100 reasons why Phds shld get better salary and facility... a country can propser if the bearacrats are phds much better than even IASs.. In phd one really learns how ot be patient, optimistic and deal with difficult situation and how to think and do things logically and in systematically.. IAS in india is all crap my Boss is phd and 3 IAS are woking under him.. i see that out put form phd could be more than bachelors who mug up and read things which they never experince and go onto holding big offices what a illogical article rediff is publishing!!!
To get 25-30K rs job, one must not only must one spend 6 years getting PHD, but should also take exams every few years. Why will anyone be interested in a career like this?

I think that is what it is actually meant to be. Do not do a Ph.D hoping to make money out of it. Do it only if you are genuinely interested in doing research and have little interest in social life, travel, vacations etc. I have seen many Ph.Ds crying looking at M.S and B.S degree people earning more time and money than them in life. I am sorry for them for they like something else but chose to do a Ph.D for reasons they best know. May be they could not do anything else. I am not sure. But one will never be happy doing something expecting something out of it. Doing it with passion and no expectation gives immense personal joy and pleasure though these emotions aid for nothing to be successful in social life.

These 'do without expecting anything' principles do not work in real life, friend. Go to the US and see how they treat their PhDs...profs there are reasonably well paid, not the pathetic 15000 or so rs. that they get paid in India. Understand that quality will not come for free. There's nothing wrong with academicians making money - some of the great scientists like Edison and Graham Bell were also extremely rich. Think practical instead of expecting people to be like saints.

Dear Harsha, You are right. But I am not sure whether Edison or Bell thought of being rich. Probably they got rich in the process of their research. Anyway, I am not sure. What I am sure about is that I am suggesting one possible way of being happy for people who suffer from "I am doing a Ph.D - I am the most hardworking guy in the world - I should get rewarded/paid more than anybody else" syndrome. If a person is free from this syndrome, he will definitely be happy. If quality work comes paid, it means the work has been done for money not for personal satisfaction of the doer. But you are right. I also mentioned that in my last statement "... aid for nothing ... social life".
Why not every degree should have an expiry? Experience teaches you a lot isnt it?..what if a person is bookish and good in passing exams but is out of reality?...rubbish idea!
iam sure that this cant be implemented...coz many of the politicians got free Phds from various universities and they would not vote for this!!!hahahah

The writer's concern about falling standard of education is quite genuine. But the solution he is prescribing is totally out of context. A Ph.D thesis awarded with a degree years back has nothing to do with teachers' performance in a class room. The findings of a Ph.D theis expires on the date of submission of thesis. As a matter of fact in India, except the researcher himself, no body (including his supervisor and the examiner) reads it. The two participants, mentioned above, have their own reason to get involved with the farce. This statement is equally valid for a thesis submitted in JNUs, IITs and/ or any 'mufasil' university in India.
CERTAINLY NOVEL IDEA. EVERY PROFESSION NEEDS SUCH EXPIRY DATES EXCEPT FOR POLITICIANS. BECAUSE THEY DONT NEED ANY QUALIFICATION AT ALL EXCEPT MURDER/RAPE CASES, LAND GRABBING OR BANK FRAUDS, JAIL SENTENCES ETC. IF THERE IS DATE EXPIRY FOR POLITICIANS, THEY WILL COMMIT FRESH CRIMES (NOT THAT THEY DONT OTHERWISE) TO REVALIDATE THEIR QUALIFICATIONS. THEY NEITHER NEED NOR HAVE ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS. BUT WHY NO ONE INDIA IS THINKING OF MUCH SIMPLER REFORMS TO DRIVE COUNTRY TOWARDS REAL & ALROUND DEVELOPMENT? WHY NOT ASK MLAs & MPs TO STAY & WORK 25 DAYS IN THEIR CONSTITUENCIES & SUBMIT DAILY REPORTS ON THEIR WORK? WH NOT INTRODUCE NEW RULE THAT ONCE ELECTED AS MP,MLA, THEY & THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS SHOULD STUDY & TAKE MEDICAL TREATMENT ONLY IN THEIR CONSTITUENCY. NOT TO LEAVE CONSTITUENCY WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION, NOT TO TRAVEL IN ANY PRIVATE VEHICLE BUT ONLY IN GOVT BUSSES, EAT & SLEEP, AT LEAST 7 DAYS IN DIFFERENT BC,SC/ST & SOCIAL WELFARE HOSTELS. ALSO WITHDRAW ALL GOVT VEHICLES FROM ALL GOVT OFFICERS AND GIVE THEM LOAN TO BUY VEHICLE & PAY RUNNING ALLOWANCE FOR MILEAGE USED. TODAY, ALL GOVT VEHICLES ARE USED ONLY 30% MAXIMUM ON OFFICIAL PURPOSES & REST 70% IS USED FOR PERONAL USE. EVEN MINISTERS SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN GOVT VEHICLES. THEY ARE RICH ENOUGH TO BUY 25 CARS EACH, NEW LUXURY CARS. NO GOVT EMPLOYEE SHOULD BE PERMITTED TO GO OUT NOR ANY OUTSIDER PERMITTED TO ENTER ANY GOVT OFFICE. THEY MUST WORK ONLY ON LETTERS AND ANY DELAY IN REPLYING LETTERS, THE CONCERNED EMPLOYEE MUS
