Goal post shifts for Indo-US nuclear deal
by my message on Jul 09, 2007 01:59 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

In the first place it was naive to think and believe that the US was interested in the energy interests of India. They were only interested in their own commercial and political interests (may be its their right to look after their interests).

The credit of underselling India goes entirely to the Prime Minister who seems to have gone into this exercise without considering the objections raised by eminent Scientists who know better on this subject, and infact that of the Left parties with wose support this Govt is existing.

That is true US ins not interested in India's energy security. But Indians need Energy ( good qualty continuous electricity)
India has 300 Billion USD surplus and Rupee is appreciating against USD. Now choice is >> Buy Nuclear reactors or Defence armaments from US).

or Nuclear reactors we need gauranteed assurred Long term supply contracts for Nuclear fuel.

US is main culprit sitting tightly and controlling nuclear suppliers group.

US-Russian nuclear co-operation
by Yogi on Jul 09, 2007 11:50 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India need not worry about accepting the 123 Agreement. India's immediate need is not a nuclear weapon, but nuclear energy for its economic growth. Once it has acquired the economic might (military might automatically follows economic might), it can master the nuclear technology (I am sure its scientists will deliver that capability, when it has enough money to spend on R&D). Anyways, use of nuclear weapon by any responsible nation in modern times is over-rated. I don't think any responsible nation (I mean the current so-called superpowers) has the courage to use a nuclear weapon. Its impact will be global devastation. Only US has used it one time, when it did not understand the impact of such an irresponsible act.

by indiman on Jul 10, 2007 08:14 PM  Permalink
So do you think the US is helping us reach economic might so that one day we will screw them. Sorry to say they are cleverer than your thinking ability. This deal is full of landmines that pose "invisible" chains that will make India forever dependent on the west. Why do you think everybody from BJP, CPIM, Scientists, many people who care about the country are opposed to this deal, because they are stupid according to you?. Manmohan singh has become old and he is not thinking properly, furthermore he has never been a person that listens to anybody, that is why he never won a Lok sabha election because he could never relate to the people. He is a stubborn man that is going to lead India into Nuclear slavery. Write it down this will happen. The man will die one day but many Indians will live through his blunder. He will be another Nehru in Indias History of people that were more interested in prtraying a friendlier outlook of India while compromising the countries security.

India does not need nuclear energy
by Sincere Citizen on Jul 09, 2007 11:31 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India should be focussing on harnessing its abundant solar energy. Nuclear energy is a waste of effort and risky in terms of usage.
Let US and Russia keep their exclusive rights on whatever they think is important, they are totally skewed in their thinking.
India should be going fast behind Solar and tidal power. Thousands of kilowatts of solar energy is just wasted in this country.
We should give a burial to this nuclear deal we dont need it the US and Russia does, we are not here to look after their interests.

great one from amrica.

lols whatever amrica does is for her own benefit and others will be made scape goat. This time i feel russia will wage a backstage war through this dal and usa will loose substantially. Good Luck to both countries and India needs to backtrack now. Since amrica has very well indirectly informed what she expects from India. India has to backtrack. Else it will be like signing non-proliferation treaty. Not acceptable. Amricans are clever manupulators. UPA is bunch of donkeys which will eat paper irrespective of its importance. Same is UPA. NDA was much better when it came to foreign policies. Next it will be NDA under Vajpayee'ji. Good bye to deal as well as UPA.

If the congress is one side of the coin, the BJP is the other side. Had NDA been power, the deal would have gone through without any opposition. They would have created some issue that can divert the attention of the nation. They have done umpteen times. It is the people who have to oppose the deal...

Look at NASA, at one time they researched in Velcro now used in so many areas.

This clearly shows BARC need direction.
I tell you , when the Nuclear impasse ends,
US companies will take BARC scientists in huge numbers.
Than people will say why this Brain Drain.

I cooled my heals in ONGC, Much later I realised my market worth. Finally I could retire at age of 48. For ONGC I meant nothing they were full of SC/ST/OBC.

For MNC I was worth 1000 USD per day.

I believe these guys are very talented but lack direction. BARC should join hands with Indian private sector

You are spot on.
We are indeed limited by this non availabilty of Uranium so we are being blackmailed.
For thorium / fast breeder route we have to carry all the buden on our shoulders, no other country worth the salt has that much experience than we have in this technology.

But for FBR cycle to be complete we again need Uranium.

I wish people on this forum could understand that cursing BARC wont do any thing good to India.

Just have a look at Govt sector IOC Gujarat refinery. It has 12 mt/year capacity with 4 units. Reliance refinery ( Private sector) has 2 units and has 15 mt/year capacity for each unit.

Private sector can do wonders, Both rfineries have same INDIANS!!! It is upto our political leaders to get maximum out of BARC scientists.

The best way to deal with this would be to co-operate with iran which has vast resource of uranium, this will be the bargaining chip for india while dealing with US.

But Iran is yet to become self sufficient. Than comes the question of being exporter in Enriched Uranium.

Even India has to some extent Uranium mines but we need a world class infrstructure to exploit and come to commercial utilization.

Iran is fast coming up in the region. Persians are very knowledgeable and hard working but they need to cover a lot of technological steps before becoming nuclear fuel supplier nation.

By all accounts we are ahead technically but even than we need support.

That is why I keep on repeating that India needs rivate sector participation if we need to improve our time line.

Just have a look at Bombay high ( offshore oil technology) Even Russia lags behind. Rather it is nowwhere globally.

Nuclear technology is a step more complecated

BARC is not full of DUMB HEADS.
It is upto our political leaders to take decision regarding efficient utilization of guys in this department.

It was way back in 1980's when US backed out of energythrough Nuclear route when it was faced with 3 mile island and chenobyl happenings.

That was shutters down for US. But india continued to catch up with US and we indeed have talented scientists who need direction.

India and BARC can not do much about nonavailablity of Uranium in India.
Which we need even if we go for thorium based FBR technology.

In 1978 I changed my course to OIL industry but I know Most talented guys from our physics department went in for BARC. I know , I was not as half talented or committed to persuing research in Nuclear energy

why not thorium reactors
by Abhishek Agiwal on Jul 09, 2007 09:35 AM  Permalink

We have abundant thorium in our country and we are quiet advanced in developing these reactots too....why must we put our time and energy in uranium for which we always have to llok at other nations. Why cant we concentrate in the resources which are within our own country and which can give us the same results.. Lets go for the THORIUM based reactors

India will loose or gain once Nuclear deal is made
by ASHOK on Jul 09, 2007 08:29 AM  Permalink

Once India/US nuclear route opens up, many Indian nuclear scientist will join US companies.
India has highly talented pool of such technocrats, built over the years.

I think India should open up Nuclear power area to Indian Private sector so that they can retain some of this talented pool.

by Patrick on Jul 09, 2007 04:52 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

America has many mistresses and we were briefly one of them. The grants might be good, but nothing can be the same as caucasian country. Period. The rest was driven by our dreams. I am not knowledgeable enough in nuclear matters nor do i understand the reasons why india is itching for this. Clearly, the highest levels og government are pursuing this matter indicating that we genuinely need some form of unhindered supplies.

But to expect that in our own terms is quite juveile in international politics where we have some powerful neighbours worried over our intentions in this deal

Patrick as I understand, India needs to source Uranium , which do not have in Indian Mines.

US and its so called Nuclear club has monoplised it and we are being Bullied.
Now Russia is also co ordinating with US.
Other possible Nuclear supplier countries ( Canada / Australia ) are also with US.

For us we need low carbon emmission route to electricity.

Wind mills / Hydroelectricity are pretty expensive for India to go with.
