OBC Should throw away crutches
by Deepak N. Thanekar on Jun 09, 2006 04:22 PM  Permalink

This articles from Prof.M.S.Gopinathan is extra ordinary and an eye opener to all.

I fully agree with his view. As stated in the article, If you are socially disadvantaged, you must strive to overcome that disadvantage and the only way to do that is to educate yourself and your children. Ask for good schools, good teachers and scholarships. But all knows what is happening in the school!!! Reservation is also there and talented teachers if they are from forward classes are denied the job as a teacher.

Then how we can improve and get good education? It is learnt that in the school teachers do not know the subject well. Thanks to the reservation policy there too!!!

So, finally it should start from the school level where the basic education is given. Do not have reservation policy there. If we have then you cannot have talented indian child.

Rsaervation quota
by Dr Thomas Mathai on Jun 09, 2006 04:21 PM  Permalink

The original plan for the reservation was only for 10 years. However, when we think of giving further quota, it should be for economically poor section among the Dalits. The creamy layer in all sections should not be given any quota but on merit basis only. There are very rich people among so called poor section of the society. Even there are very poor people in the forward caste people.

From the very beginning the Central Govt failed to give compulsory education upto 10th std to all its citizens. So much money is wasted on projects and indirectly cased by corrupted politicians. All the facilites given to the poor section of society were gathered by crooked and wicked politicians. For example, the rule of Lalu Yadav in Bihar for 15 years was a complete failure and the people of Bihar could not receive any benefits. We do not have strong central leadership. Many of the politicians from all parties want power by hook or crook that is all. Unless vast corruption is arrested our country cannot surge further to reach the goals.

We need people like you
by Shibaji on Jun 09, 2006 04:21 PM  Permalink

Thanks Sir for speaking the truth and coming out on this. Please accept my deep respect and appreciation for you as a person and as a responsible member of the society.
I would just like to add couple of interesting facts

1. The people who are crying for the OBC's are politicians and people who have nothing to do with IIT or IIM and not the OBC students.

2. The fate of prime educational institutions in India is decided by people who are not even qualified to sit for the entrance examinations for those institutes.

OBC cruches
by r.p.singh on Jun 09, 2006 04:21 PM  Permalink

The message by Prof. M.S.Gopinathan convey's a lot of what I had in my mind.

But when I recall an incident conveyed to me some 20 years back by my uncle, my views change. He had come across a boy from weaker/ backward section of the society who was working as a labourer carrying coal on his head for a Power House in Calcutta.

Only when the boy came to him,to get a working experience certificate did he realise that the boy was a 1st class position holder in his intermediate Exam. He had recently, competed and got a job with the railways.

Tell me, which Private sector would give jobs to such citizen. How many of us will truly go out of our way to pay an extra rupee to the rickshawalla.

We do not have Leaders who think and work from their heart. Had it been so then probably there would be no reservation, today.

Our country should be an'equal opportunity'nation. Nobody should live on the mercy of others. It is so shamefully to think that we are still debating on this issue. Our Finance is more worried when the stock market falls rather than looking for means to povide good education, health and better life for our citizen.

with best wishes to the thinkers.

Great Article......!!!!
by Ashok Jain on Jun 09, 2006 04:18 PM  Permalink

Firstly, thanks to the author for such a wonderful article.

No wonder why even after more than 50 years of independence we think about reservations. The politicians fed some people with easy access to posts/work/money and they got used to it. The reservation which was supposed to usher in social equality has brought in a class of people who want to enjoy fruits with the least effort.

Finally!
by lakshmi on Jun 09, 2006 04:17 PM  Permalink

Hi,
I really liked the way you have brought out the truth. Reservations must exist to some extent in terms of scholarships and tution waivers. You are discussing the level at IIT, but the fact is when you are not competent for a course you just cannot clear it successfully at any level. I have done my Masters in Comp Science in India and when we started our courses we were a total of 40 in the class which diminished to almost 25 at the end. All those who were given crutches limped out. Poeple should stop being vote banks and use their brains instead. All this reservations just reduces the quality. We would have been 40 bright students pasing out that year instead of 25 if there werent any reservations. In the end, whether anti-reservations or pro-reservation people win, INDIA just loses.
"India is the only country in the world where people fight to be called backward".

Thanks once again for a eye-opening article.

Regards

Jaago India Jaago...

The article is an eye-opener for all those who support the very idea of reservation and for the OBC themselves. It is time we realised that all humans are on the same platform when it comes to education. Nobody in this competitive world cares for caste and religion. I think the SC,ST abd OBC people shoul, in fact protest against this discrimination,by the name of reservation, which is not showing how strong they can be but only, how weak they are.

IITOBC's throw away the Crutch
by ganeshram on Jun 09, 2006 04:15 PM  Permalink

A Thought provoking Article from an Itellect, who forced his way up through Sheer Hard work...Kudos
I Respect This Intellect.
The Politicians....have created a "MENTALLY BACKWARD CLASS"...
Why not the HRD Minister....make sure to provide
Basic education..as per constituition...if he says he is doing this reservation to comply with constituition...
He wont...because...if the mass is an "EDUCATED MASS"..
the politicians wont survive......
Because the Mass will start Questioning...
all they want is to have a "MENTALLY BACKWARD" class...

True...but would that happen
by Bharath on Jun 09, 2006 04:15 PM  Permalink

Best bargain now would be to create institutions 100%for backward classes and spare the IITs...

With states like tamilnadu going to the extent of 69% reservation across all educational institutions (including private autonomous institutions) i doubt if even the above bargain could be settled for
