A Different Feeling at Kochi Airport
by Jose on Jul 27, 2006 08:40 AM  Permalink

Hi

I am an NRI who happened to travel with family for annual vacations to Kerala this summer. One normally expects, and rarely experiences, pleasant behaviour from the Customs & Immigration. At best they are with their robotic, stare at the face demeanour. I do not know who made the difference this time around. May be the Officer ( who looked to be in-charge of the airport from his shoulder stripes) or may be from the top. This officer was waiting at the arrival hall, smiling & politely ensuring that the passengers are not harassed by anyone. I found it pleasantly surprising. Some of the youngsters in the cadre seem to have got it right, right in the beginning of their career!!That's grt news for the travelling public!!

MUMBAI 26/7; THEN AND NOW
by venkataraman on Jul 26, 2006 04:50 PM  Permalink

I pity with most of the citizens' predicament. The miserable failure of the successive Governments after the independence is the cause for all this fiasco, as they have not taken preventive measures expecting such calamities. Even now, I think they are not prepared for such eventualities.
Incidentally, I would like to ask all Mumbaikars whether they are all paying their taxes properly as demanded; if they do that properly, they have the right to ask the Government; if they are making the payments all these days regularly, probably this year you can form an association and take appropriate action in refusing payment of taxes, to draw the attention of the Government. Let us pray to God for saving us, in spite of these Governments functioning.

Mumbai,26/7:Then and now.
by T R A Rao on Jul 26, 2006 04:47 PM  Permalink

There is some thing called ACT OF GOD, non e can anticipate it or do anything. Even if forewarned none can avoid it, he impact can be mitigated.

What happened in Muimbai on 26/7 was unprecedented, but it was accentuated by our greedy politicians and inefficient and calloous bureacracy. Take for inistance Tsunami, what happened people were overtaken by Tsunami about which none had experience.

Therefore in adversity, one can think of helping our fellow citizens instead of just thnking about oneself, one's marriage, etc. The marriage ceremony can be postponed by the suffering of people is some thing which can not be. Let us draw lessons out of such human tragedies and devise systems to manage it.

Cheer up! things are happening
by siva on Jul 26, 2006 04:40 PM  Permalink

Friends,

Frustrations are on the arise in such helpless situations. But let us see the changes happening around. We have a more than wide awake media. We have the Right to Information programme that is catching up. Consumer movements are happening. Let us pick one each and push forward. Form groups and move ahead. Let us make the change! Ask for the inspiring speech that Dr Abdul Kamal gave at Hyderabad few years back. It is floating around in the e-mail. Your approach to life in India WILL change.

Abouts bombs, we don't have time to fix responsibilities or blame the system. We are a part of this system.

Self help is the best help. Each individual be it a man, women or children should keep a vigilant eye on his/her surrounding particularly travelling. What the agencies do for prevention is never visible to the naked eye!! They come into action after the incident.

There is no point in firing each other on blogs. Change is in the air. Let us keep moving!

There is no other country in the world that is emotionally charged as we are - so caring as we are and courteous as we are!

Let us still say - mera bharat mahan.

Regards

Siva

Feeling of helplessness
by Debarati Dasgupta on Jul 26, 2006 04:08 PM  Permalink

Dear All!
Everyone who was present in Mumbai during 26/7 last year will have their own horrific stories to recount.I was stuck for 2 days in my office at Nariman Point while my Ground Floor flat in Vile parle was inundated. Not that the situation is any better now. Despite tall claims by the Administration , we struggle with our day to day life and live in constant fear of terrorist threats. More than the fear, we are engulfed in a sense of helplessness knowing that the persons in power simply do not have the will to protect us from calamities. They are only interested in appeasing their votebanks and filling their personal coffers. They live in high security zones and do not travel in Public Transport.Their kids , whatever be their level of merit go abroad to study. They do not have to compete for the few seats that are left after Reservation. I think it is we the citizens who are to be blamed for electing such people on the first place. Politics has become a happy hunting ground for unscrupulous people because good citizens do not come forward to join public life. After getting educated at highly subsidised higher institutions of learning, they emigrate to greener pastures.

26/7: then and now
by Mehta on Jul 26, 2006 03:49 PM  Permalink

Hi,
Things has not chnaged then and now; after26/7/2005 authorities had promised that such things will not happen in future but again same thing happened even earlier this year.
People of Mumbai always keep mum on any such incident, if it is 26/7 or 4/7 or 11/7 or any other calamity they are habituated to help each other, rather seeking help from the authority, because they know that civic authority alwys make false promises and later on they forget.same is with our leaders they try to get publicity from such incident.
In my opinion people of Mumbai should take responsibility of their area to protect own, instead of depending upon the authority, and should build own army to protect from the terrorist.we should take the example of Iserial and US they never ask or wait for the opinion of anybody to give the answer of terrorism, we should learn the lessons from such incident.
Our leaders are not capable to lead our country because they cannot protect the lives of innoncent citizens from such handful notoriest, thousands are killed in Kashmir since many years but our leaders have no effect on it, even after parliament attack no actions are taken, it is shamful incident.

Then and Now
by Sunil on Jul 26, 2006 03:40 PM  Permalink

The govt has done somethings to widen/Clean the roads and Storm Water drains. BUT the dirt is being put back into the storm water drains either by the daily sweepers. When they clean the drains they pile the filth at the side of the drains which waits for aroudn 10 days for the next contractor to clear it. In the meanwhile it dries and goes back into the drains.

However as CITIZENS we too owe towards the disaster by littering. We will still take the unauthorised Plastic bag from the vegtable vendor as it is convenient. We will still throw the packets of wafers and snacks (Packaged snacks) out of our cars after eating. All these will still go into the drainage system.

Blame should fall on both rather than asking how much did the govt do, we should also ask how much we did towards reducing the garbage piles.....
