I am a frequent visitor of Bombay and find the taxis and its drivers to be very honest and well behaved.Kudos to them ! On the contrary the delhi taxi operators are big time cheats !
There are just too many cabs in Mumbai. Most of the time, you find cabs parked all over, the private cars dont get any parking. Fact is, Mumbai doesnt need so many cabs, the cab drivers dont get enough fare the whole day and are underutilising their vehicles. The government is doing well not to give new licences, but should also start cutting down numbers at the rate of 5 to 7% per year for the next five years at least. That will make the profession more paying for the remaining ones and make life easier for other motorists who pay through their nose for the raods etc.
.. not sure but AC cabs (metered) do exist in Kolkata and Mumbai. Rediff needs to do a better research. Both cities have a huge taxi network , infact taxis are used very frequently in these metros unliek soem of the other ones like Delhi / Hyd / Blr / Chen where ppl avoid the same and rely on autos which are even bigger thieves

QUITE TRUE IT IS ONLY THEN THAT THERE WOULD BE NEW MODELS AND COMFORTABLE VEHICLES FOR THE MUMBAI COMMUTERS...GOOD IDEA
Every tourist coming to Mumbai creates an instant impression about Mumbai and India after a cursory look at taxis. Very old, No Side mirrors, No safety Belts, Doors that can fall off any time, Arrogabt TAxi drivers..... Qudos to Qadros, things will not change. Every time a change is proposed, Taximen go in strike and arm twist Government on agreeing to their wishes. Mumbai taxis are really a shame...
I am saying this with experience and not hear say. These new Yellow / White / Green A/c Taxis introduced in Mumbai are just too good. The taxis are neat and clean & the drivers are courteous. I stay at Ghatkopar & a normal Black/Yellow Taxi drivers ask for a fixed charge of 150 Rs. for International Airport & all these years I didnt have option but to pay. But with these new Taxis, I just make a booking in advance, the taxi comes to my doorstep 15 minutes in advance & I travel to the Airport in a new Air Conditioned Taxi & they charge me as per meter which comes to 93-95 Rs. I wish they get rid of the RICKETY OLD Taxis from the Airport and replace these with better taxis (as it is they charge quite high for the Airport Taxis)
The RTO and Transport Commissioner in Mumbai seem to be indifferent to the plight of citizens since long. The taxis are so old and creaky that it is a shame. We immediately create a poor impression with visitors coming to our city from airports or railway stations. Besides three out of five taxis have faulty meters. The worst is the syndicates at both airports.Good taxis are never allowed to get in the queues to pick up passengers. Ask any decent taxi driver. One has to use the worst taxis from airports.Nowhere in China, USA, UK, Singapore, Thailand or any developing country will the RTO allow the taxis that we are compleed to use in Mumbai as we have no alternative.

I have visited many cities in India. I have only seen metered taxis in Mumbai. They charge what meter says, unlike Bangalore Citi Taxis who will charge Rs. 50 extra above the charge. If you don't pay, then you have it from driver.

Dear sir, This is the most neglected area. The co operative idea has not come to this area. The public transport in each city should be given to co peratives run by taxi drivers and bus drivers. This way pooling of all resources will be good. The out moded old taxis can be removed overnight and new airconditioned taxis can be introduced. The private operators also can be allowed to compete with this co opeartives for premium services. All such vehicles should be allowed to go 1- sharing basis 2- non-sharing basis as per the wishes of the customer.
Presently we have only 2 modes of cheap transport. Bus and train. Taxi is very costly and is in very bad condition also. Taxi drivers life also is very bad due to unnecessary restrictions. Forming a co operative society of all drivers will help the public transport all over the country in a big way and will stop this collossal watage of petrol. PR Subramanian
Thereshouls also be a rating system in the 3 year term and those taximen who do not abide by the rules like refusing small distance passengers, old people, pregnant ladies or accident cases should be banned for life or license should be immediately terminated.
RE:all permits should have a validity of 3 years max & later it should be auctioned so that new unemployed and more energetic people take control of this. Ultimately the service should also improve due to competition.

Mr.Rupesh,
How would you like if your employer sacks you after 3 years and then auctions the position for somebody who will work for less and most probably better equiped to do your job. (Paying more for permit is equal to working for less. Explaining as you have a pea sized brain).
