Your article has been very interesting, and, going by the volume of response,a hotly debated topic in the days to come. The first reaction of many would be why open old wounds lest it inflame communal passions. Our so called secularists and thier cronies, have used this argument quite successfully all these years. But a healthy democracy needs an open and frank debate on the country's history which should act as a catharsis. When a fanatic mullah exorts some hapless youth to die for his faith, and he will enter heaven with a bevy of nymphs waiting him,why can't he do it himself and go there first? How many of Bin laden 's sons blown themselves for the glory of thier faith?Unless humans accept human life is a precious gift fron god, there is no hope.
I completely agree that all of us should forget the past and move forward including but not limited to the following facts of history -
1. Israel has been created and would prefer to live in peace. Let us forget the past and let Israel live in peace on their land and let palestinians have their sovreign nation on lands they have 2. Babri masjid has been demolished. Isn't that past too. Let us move on, there exists a temple there. Let us construct a really grand one and move on (what else could erase the memory/thought of a mosque for future generations place than a grnad temple there. 3. Let us never ever talk about crusades. Of course thats soooooooo old and obviously at least one of the parties to thhe crusade does not appear to be mature enough to understand it and take it in their stride.
Shall i say more....? I am sure my secular, educated (not degrees but tin the true sense of the word), mature friends can find many more examples of instances where the best response to anything uncomfortable is to "deny" it or sweep it out of sight rather than accept it (of course that cant be done, as Islam is the most peaceful religion) or confront it (that cant be done either because facts, however much distorted still speak up).
I am a South Indian with "North Indian Sur" name, our family tree has a North Indian Sur name. I was searching for my roots for many years to know more about my "North Indian Sur" name. My elders had told me that my fore fathers escaped to South during Aurangzeb rule to remain as Bhramin, rather than being forcefully converted to Islam. After reading the article from Francois Gautier, I have got an answer for my "North Indian Sur" name........

That cannot be proved because they have a good amount of support in terms of fanatic people and they are considered to be heroes by them, either for killing people and/or for inciting hatred.

Any reason cannot be a justification for killing innocent people and infants.

Dear FRANCOIS you can accept dark facts when you are mature enough to understand why & how they happened. Majority of Indians are still over sensitive to these issues & will flame up on recalling these incidents. Its gonna take a real long time for us to mature, think about shaping the future & then recalling & undestanding the past. Most nations that have accepted the past are the ones with one major religion. Its no joke to convince a billion people following numerous faiths about a dark past. Its best to keep the past there & move ahead. All religions have resorted to some tactic for propogation. If anyone brought out the facts about the spread of Christianity, Aurangzeb would sound like a kindergarten kid. The fact is that we are constantly facing a world that has more practical problems than spiritual ones. Every nation knows it can't survive by itself. Boundaries are opening up like never before. Communication couldn't have been better. All this is allowing human to human contacts. When you look deep inside yourself & others, you see no difference. Its something written down centuries ago, that had relevance then, that is still dictating the ways of life. Religion is required to discipline humans but law is not much different. There are plenty of Aurangzebs & Hitlers practising even today. Its just a matter of how we fight them to oblivion that decides what the world is going to look like in the near & far future. Lets wake up to accept human kind as one & sort problems that will let us all live equally & happily in the short time we are gonna be in this planet
to everybody, History is something which we accept what we read. But fact can be known from people who really suffered. whosoever thinks that Auranbzeb is great because he was not spending any mony from government for personal use and that makes him great should visit india especially maharashtra for seeing his cruel dids because of which india is still facing social disturbance. If somebody feels Aurang zeb was good I really feel pity for them that they are misguided. After partition it happens and its quite natural that countries like pakistan they will teach history which will promote that every islamic ruler of india was good because islam is basis of formation of pakistan and they try to look down upon hindu kings. That is happening with some guys like farrukh nadeem who might have read that kind of stuff. He has no right to compare shivaji the manner he compared him with Aurangzeb. In india there are lot of muslims who have great respect for Shivaji (and equal hate for Aurangzeb) for his secular stance and his freedom struggle. So what i want to say to everybody is please dont comment anything untill you achieve that so called impartial thiking which is quite difficult to have for anybody including me because all of us are influenced by social things surrounding us.

I do think that this feature about a crel king has gone a long way more than it should have..
I think we all should know the history and make sure that some kind of it never happens again.. Instead of blaming each other

None of the readers on this message board (including muslim readers) are denying that Aurangzeb was a ruthless ruler who eliminated obstacles in his way. Some of the readers are just pointing his good qualities (though very few), which should not be neglected just because he was a cruel ruler.

Brilliant article and effort by Francois Gautier. With all the politicial correctness and calculations of the day, an Indian would not do this today or would not be allowed or live to do it. Why rake up the past? The standard question from politicians and cowards of all hues and the answer in George Santanaya's words is 'Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it'. Indian heritage is really spectacular and very, very unique in its vision and practice. The only reason we Indians lost it time and time again is we do not understand and respect it enough and the only reason it survived us is that it is too powerful to be destroyed by uncaring Indians. Thank you very much, Monsieur Gautier. B U Kulkarni
