Docs in the dock
by P. Ganesh on May 15, 2006 01:41 PM  Permalink

I agree with the striking doctors only on one account. Indiscriminate reservation will help the cause of social justice beyond a point. However, I am totally against the doctors resorting to this kind of an action as it will hurt the image of the doctor at a time when the image is not exactly high. Also, their action will seriously hurt the interests of patients which the doctors are morally bound to protect at all costs including their own welfare. The duty of a doctor is several times more important than that of even a soldier or a teacher. To strike like this is gross dereliction of duty and deserves to be condomned roundly and without hesitation. Lest I am mistaken for an OBC or SC/ST, let me make it clear that I belong to the so-called forward caste. Nevertheless, I say, "Physician, first heal theyself."

Quota for Women first.
by JP Dubey on May 15, 2006 12:26 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The basic anomaly in reservations as touted and implemented is about total regards of women who constitute half of the population. If seats and jobs are to be reserved based on religion, and in the case of Hindus to fragmentize them, based on caste groups then why not by gender? First and foremost therefore is to provide and ensure reservations for women in seats in legislatures, educational institutions and jobs both in the public as well as the private sector. If you must have reservations based on other criteria as well then ensure 50% share for women in each quota. There can be no real social justice if women are left out of its purview. It is a pity that the same Ministers and parliamentarians who are so forcefully championing the cause of quota for OBCs in higher education and jobs in the private sector defeat every effort and stifle every voice for gender justice. Even the loud voices from amongst women spend all there energies in defense of much smaller causes benefiting a few thousand not pinning hard enough for their rightful share in every institution. If we must have reservations and quotas then provide first for women or stop talking about gender equality or justice.

RE:Quota
by j p shah on May 15, 2006 05:24 PM  Permalink
The reason given for additional quota is that 50% of population is OBC. Indirectly the government is encouraging the people to produce more children. Only god can understand Indian Politicians who on the one hand asks to have only one child and on the other hand encourages people to have more children.
If quotas are to be fixed it should be for women or for the family who doesnot have person emplyed. By fixing quota based on population of a particular caste is ridiculous and disastrous.

Yes i support all quotas. As a democratic country we should give give all types of quota's but on only condition. That is

Schedule an independent enquiry by Incometax people on the assets of all the MPS and other great leaders who supoort these quotas, and share their properties with these SC, ST, OBC, etc.....But one thing generously OCs never accept this.

Reservations
by syed on May 15, 2006 11:57 AM  Permalink

Reservation is needed for the weaker sections of the society in order to enable them to have a level playing ground in view of the increasing gaps between the have's and have nots.
But if one analyses the effect, it is not the really weaker sections who get these benefits. It is the 3rd and 4th generations of the already uplifted societies. And one more thing. You are crippling the weaker sections further by keeping them away from competition while the merited students from the other communities have to pay the price and get demoralized.
It is a shame.
