Quota for Women first.
by JP Dubey on May 15, 2006 12:26 PM

The basic anomaly in reservations as touted and implemented is about total regards of women who constitute half of the population. If seats and jobs are to be reserved based on religion, and in the case of Hindus to fragmentize them, based on caste groups then why not by gender? First and foremost therefore is to provide and ensure reservations for women in seats in legislatures, educational institutions and jobs both in the public as well as the private sector. If you must have reservations based on other criteria as well then ensure 50% share for women in each quota. There can be no real social justice if women are left out of its purview. It is a pity that the same Ministers and parliamentarians who are so forcefully championing the cause of quota for OBCs in higher education and jobs in the private sector defeat every effort and stifle every voice for gender justice. Even the loud voices from amongst women spend all there energies in defense of much smaller causes benefiting a few thousand not pinning hard enough for their rightful share in every institution. If we must have reservations and quotas then provide first for women or stop talking about gender equality or justice.
