The author has out the whole issue in a new prespective. Instead of totaly decrying the reservation policy, he has given logical and implementable suggestions. I believe that his belief in the Student class is rightly placed and that they would be willing to take the extra burden for the benefit if future genrations. I especially liked his suggestion on playing nf the minds of the reserved class and coaxing them to come out of their shell.
Excellent article by offcourse and intellectual. The problem is those who make these decisions lack the intellect. This article is so logical that hardly anyone with a decent IQ would contradict unless they see some harm to their personal gains. If the rulers of this country cannot understand this simple logic, I don't think they deserve to rule.
We need to remove stupid (for lack of better word) decision makers to have such ideas implemented. If we can have a logical intellectual as decision maker, (one who does not look at all policies as means of getting votes) we should comfortably get such ideas implemented. However, that brings back the catch-22 situation. A person who is an intellect and takes each policy at its merit, not at its vote gaining power, would never get enough votes to make it to the top.
Go figure - someone.
Anyways, kudos to Pradeep for an excellent thought provoking article.

Dear Mr.Krishnacr, thanks for the reply. But,just to wind uo saying that it is easy to say than deliver is a well known fact to all of us.And yes,if what you said is correct, then probably u r actually targeting all those suffered and sincere comments in this column.Even the author is a gr8 person as I have met him personally. But still everyone unfortunately have some limitations(not an excuse),but try to do whatever they can.I am too looking forward to atleast assist, ifnot command, some such good cause. I really wonder,if u had taken any sincere steps to "join politics and work hard to educate the every citizen of india about the Good and bad of the existing policies and new solutions to them in a simple and effective manner?"...as you said in ur comment. pls be encouraging... Karthik
Dear Prof.Pradeep, You donot know me,but I once had the previlege to attend one of your lectures during the 'Winter school for MSc students in Dec-2001'.I am from Pondy.Univ.;now in Univ.Of Vienna,Austria, for my PhD.I completely agree to your(& Prof.Gopinath's)views of a revised policy, though with some more inputs,if it makes sense.Being myself a victim of the resevation policy,I guess I too can see things better. 1.Apart from the ID for each student, the guardian, esp. the financier of the student should also be tagged and once either this student's-id or the financier's-id is tagged through computers throuout India,a complete description of the history of the employment should be also listed sothat atleast most of the people cannot cheat, though there are always escapers.Ofcourse, this is a long process which means every employer should take care of the same. 2.In this way, truly to start with, atleast some justice could be done with the reservation or previleges based on financial status could be implemented. 3.And yes, NO COLUMNS STATING/ASKING THE CASTE,CREED,RELIGION SHOULD BE MENTIONED IN ANY APPLICATION FORMS. I wish some such things happens... waiting eagerly...Karthik

It is because the best minds never want to take up the real challenges and busy in looking after themselves. Why don't the best minds join politics and work hard to educate the every citizen of india about the Good and bad of the existing policies and new solutions to them in a simple and effective manner? They never do so because it is easier said than done.
An excellent & thought provoking article, coming from the best of the brains in the country. I wonder why a country like India having the best of the best people still ruled by cronies & jokers.
Dear Pradeep, Only the ruling class among the SC, ST and OBC will get the benefits of reservatios. Poors among the SC, ST and OBC need primary education first. Intead of resrvations, the requirement is, to provide quality education to the children, who cannot afford it, first at primary level and later at higher level. Special facilities for education need not be only for SC,ST or OBC, but for all Indians whom we expect to take pride in saluting the Tricolor or sing Jan Gan Man. I believe, Arjun Singh and coy are working for the countries/agencies who want IIT the symbol of Indian pride shattered. The world swears by IITians whose contribution in IT revolution and India's emergence as super power has no parallel. Alas the reservations. History will remember the reservationist as traitors who delayed India becoming a developed country by a century. The venom of reservations is breaking the fabric of society, especially among students. It has caused mistrust among friends, belonging to different caste groups. The invisible under current, will get worse, it being a function of unemployment. I wonder if NETAs are not aware. May be the divided nation suits them better.
dear IITean prof, i agree with you, we shud not have reservation based on caste.Let the lower caste struggle.and then convert like what thousand of them are doing in tamilnad, like what they have done in UP and BIHAR for years. let them convert to other religions like islam and christianity, and DEAR SIR, THAT DAY wont be far when resrevation will be kept for remaining 4-5 % brahmins like us.

Just when I think of dumping rediff as my favorite portal; there comes always a thought provoking, scholastic and in the truest sense an intellectual 'column' that reignites my belief in rediff. I hope this is not the end of Professor Pradeep's article. These are the neurons that got to be deciding the policies of free independent India - this is what is different from the developed world where policy makers more often than not are the cronies of Mirakuma, paswan, Shabuddin, Mulayam , Arjun, karunanidhi of the world.
The author has presented a well thought-out plan for the upliftment of the marginalized communities, employing a modified reservation policy. I think he is right in saying that the present system of a creamy layer enjoying most of the reservation benefits, while the really deserved are largely ignorant, is not the best model to follow. Similarly, it is a welcome suggestion that the quota for promotions should be abolished, once equal opportunities are ensured to everyone upto the employment level. These may not be very easy to implement in a society like ours, but we have to start somewhere to make life better for everyone in our country.. Reji
