They want the breeder in which INDIA is only behind Russia
by Satish Gogisetty on Feb 21, 2006 10:26 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

All they want is to kill our nuclear industry like they did to arms industry. Lure politicans by kick-backs into deals and make us import expensive nuclear power plants with no guranteed fuel supplies. And also steal our breeder technology in which we are a leader (Just for your knowledge: Our nuclear industry is so advanced that we have the best operating performance of Heavy water reactors and we have 16 reactors where as china has only as of date, the chinese hope that they will be able to build prototype breeder reactor by 2020 but, india will have operational 500 mew Prototype Fast Breeder reactor by 2010, we already have 40 Mew research breeder operational for 20 years now).

The americans just want to steel the breeder technology as they have stopped research in that area 30 years back and have done no progress either in Heavy water Power plants or breeders which are and will be our main stay moving further to Throuim based breeder reactors. The americans want to kill our progress and want us to be reliable on unreliable uranium fuel imports for ever, they don't want us to have independent fuel cycle leading to energy independence and security.

I completely agree with this analysis. I just hope that some senior guy from our nuclear establishment comes out in the open and blows the whistle on this deal.

I think Indians are too touchy about things such as equality and tone. Americans are blunt compared to English people its their style, they are blunt with each other. India not equal to west in terms of living standards. India should be a leading nation given the talents of its people and the richness of its civillisation. The fact its not is very humiliating. The Chinese find their relatively low position humiliating also. But they have the grace not to wallow in their humiliation in front of foreigners. Upper caste hindus are used to deference from the lower classes. I know my father was a hindu priest. I am British however and I can see the culture class between Americans and Indians. Indians are very concerned with deference, respect and status. Americans are too, but in normal life a poor black man is not expected to defer to a rich white man. Similarly, a poor white man does not bow to a black woman like condoleeza rice with power. "Take it or leave I don´t care" to an Indian its insulting, in western vocabulary (particularly) America this normal talk.

chat with Dr.Perkovich
by dmohan on Feb 21, 2006 07:53 PM  Permalink

DR.Perkovich has virtually said in plain words that india is unequal and that it is upto india to "take it or leave it" . his tone and language is really humiliating . i don't think signing the deal in the present form will do any good. in fact it is certain to harm india's interest in the long run.already u.s.and china seem to have ganged up in playing 'pakistan' card as evident from the goings on of musharaff's visit to china. the very fact that both are indulgent to pakistan who has the cheek to ask for treatment at par with india after all that clandestine proliferation, byitself puts a question mark on u.s. intentions. i think, Parliament alone should take a final decision on the matter as our PMO appears to be heavily leaning towards u.s. and i don't know why!it will be really sad to see the prospects of undoing of all that Nehru and the country stood for all these years.

Nuclear deal
by BN Raizada on Feb 21, 2006 05:30 PM  Permalink

India must follow chinese example and demand equality with that country in every aspect including nuclear co-operation with the US to maintain its pride and self respect as a great nation and an emerging Super Power. That is only possible if we stop lowering ourselves by asking for such deals and become self reliant with our own efforts like China.Indeed unless we ourselves become self-confident and mentally free of the colonial mindset we will never command international respect and will be treated at par with other third world countries like Pakistan.

''the world may not change the rules''
by N J Ramesh on Feb 18, 2006 01:43 AM  Permalink

It is good to know the way these think tank think! Had he claimed to be talking on behalf of US it would have been OK, even for NATO, it would still be passe, but he claims to be talking for the whole world!

In other words the basic point he makes is that technology policy of the world would be a subset of the political policy he and his masters have formulated and will formulate in future!

In addition, he is implying that in this tussle between Lone Super Power(LSP) and the Non-Alignment Power(NAP), there is no real game; for LSP is both player and the sole rule maker.

Indian response, while tackling these 'compulsions', hopefully would reflect not just the non-aligned policy but historical anti-colonial ethos as well.

Dr.Perkovich--N-deal with US
by k k vaisoha on Feb 17, 2006 08:39 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

If the deal is at India's initiative then it is utterly stupid of India to have gone for it as there is nothing of gain for India but a total loss on all counts.

Atomic reactor generated steam is not going to be cost affordable if it is going to be from US.In India nobody would like to live near such a plant. We have high population density and hence we cannot locate these far enough from population centres.

It is most certainly not worth trading our defence capablity for a utterly rubbish expensive unaffordable cost electric power generation reactors from US and then become dependent for future uranium fuel supplies on powers who are already planning to strangle India.

This goes entirely in favour of Pakisan and China who would be going GA GA if India gets roped into this deal as it will weaken India's defence capablity which is what they wish for.

President Bush has proved to be very smart and intelligent in making our PM a complete DODO to sign such a disastrous for India deal.

India just mustn't go for such a suicidal deal.It is the most rotten deal full of peril for India.Dr.Perkovich has made it very clear that he has only love for disarming India to suit US.kkv

I beg to differ with you on a couple of points.

1) Nuclear power is cheap. Countries like France get 80% of their energy from nuclear power. What are the alternatives? Oil? Oil prices have skyrocketed thanks to the mullahs in the middle east. In the future as oil supplies diminish, and demand from growing economies like India and China increase, the cost of oil will only go up.

2) Nuclear engery is safe and clean, at least in relation to oil. Oil, coal, and other fossil fuels are very dirty. They are bad for the environment. Cause a lot of pollution, respiratory problems etc. The only thing that is dangerous from nuclear reactors is the spent nuclear fuel, which can be re-processed or stored in underground containers.

3) The problem is that India, due to bad luck, doesn't have much nuclear fuel. Nuclear fuel, like oil, doesn't grow on trees. Contries like the US have been blessed with a *lot* of nuclear fuel. India has almost none. Perhaps India will finally be able to develop thorium, which India has a lot, reactors. But that is perhaps decades into the future. There is no time. The people of India need energy *now*.
