RE:Dr.Perkovich--N-deal with US
by nickel on Feb 21, 2006 06:06 AM

I beg to differ with you on a couple of points.

1) Nuclear power is cheap. Countries like France get 80% of their energy from nuclear power. What are the alternatives? Oil? Oil prices have skyrocketed thanks to the mullahs in the middle east. In the future as oil supplies diminish, and demand from growing economies like India and China increase, the cost of oil will only go up.

2) Nuclear engery is safe and clean, at least in relation to oil. Oil, coal, and other fossil fuels are very dirty. They are bad for the environment. Cause a lot of pollution, respiratory problems etc. The only thing that is dangerous from nuclear reactors is the spent nuclear fuel, which can be re-processed or stored in underground containers.

3) The problem is that India, due to bad luck, doesn't have much nuclear fuel. Nuclear fuel, like oil, doesn't grow on trees. Contries like the US have been blessed with a *lot* of nuclear fuel. India has almost none. Perhaps India will finally be able to develop thorium, which India has a lot, reactors. But that is perhaps decades into the future. There is no time. The people of India need energy *now*.
