Gods are guilty this time!!!
by jeeja prakash on Aug 04, 2005 03:03 PM  Permalink

When I walked into this city first time around a decade ago, I was told , almost assured that Mumbai is the most fast paced city in India, and one of the most rocking cities in the world!!! As i grew in this city, and the city grew on me, I also found that beneath the facade of this brilliant fast paced, enviable piece of land, there lies a very religius , almost spiritual set of people who build their each day and future with help from Him--higer power, from their Vighnadeva --Lord Ganesh. This is evident from the way this city takes to streets during the Ganesh festival in Aug-september. Which city / state publicly celebrates a festival so passionately together irrespective of social status or purchasing power of its people, probably with the exception of Calcutta / Bengal during Durga Pooja.

Still have the gods deserted this city time and again?..take for example the huge loss of life and property during these rains!!!!!
Am not trying to blame a Superior power for some thing like this!!But they say, Gods help those who help themselves, or were Gods trying to figure out actually how resilient are these Mumbaikers? Time to reflect!!!!

We deserve it
by AV on Aug 04, 2005 02:34 PM  Permalink

We completely deserve this! Its not just BMC's fault. One can't expect them to clean the gutters everytime you throw that plastic bottle in it to clog up everthing else. Its about time we learn the civic duties of a responsible citizen!

Mumbaikars
by Shailesh Kothawade on Aug 04, 2005 12:29 PM  Permalink

I agree that everybody is responsible for making mumbais condition so worse but I would like to add few facts about mumbaikars.

Mubaikars are the Big Hearted people as compare to any other city in India. Here you will get all types of people with heavy density.

Mumbaikars are more loyal about paying there taxes If we will talk it in terms of number then weare paying 58,000 Cr. Rs per year . Which is higher than addition of Calcutta , Delhi and Chennai is paying. Against that what we are getting only 100Cr. Per year and after 15,000Cr loss government is giving 500 Cr more. Whereas Delhi gets 6000 Cr. Rs. Suppose all Mumbaikars decided not to pay 1-year tax and donate it to develop Mumbai then I think we will not need to ask money from central government for years. And if it will be used in the right direction then I think Mumbai will definetly foot over the Shnegai (about what CM was dreaming).

And about fighting spirit of Mumbai I dont think anybody is having that much of spirit. And if you have seen on the road on Tuesday/Wednesday not a single person was crying whereas everybody was helping to others to reach there home safely. I think in last week if u will chec

Mumbai rains --- everything is not lost
by sumandebray on Aug 04, 2005 12:12 PM  Permalink

Its interesting to watch people talking about reforms and taking blames upon themselves. I never had been to Mumbai... I have passed through the city while traveling from the Domestic to the International Terminal. I do not know much about this great city. But it definitely makes me proud when someone talks about her. I am partial about Kolkata though, and that my pride. But the point is that both the cities are burdened with population and we are not being able to do much about it. I believe everyone has his right to pursue the dreams. So did our ancestors; some 100 years back and some more recently. How can you stop construction? Maybe I have a place of my own but you might be in need of one! But we definitely need to upgrade the Infrastructure and that too with the limited resources. Mind you, we are not generous Taxpayers. But what is the point in blaming the politicians, does anyone even expect anything out of them- I guess not. They will keep scratching the wound so that it still pains and they can use that to their advantage. Lets not allow them to do that.
Its the Think-tank behind them who needs to have a vision and they have it. They are the bureaucrats. So lets all

Cooperation from Top 2 Bottom
by Ibrahim Khan on Aug 04, 2005 09:34 AM  Permalink

Yes I do agree that we ourselves needs to be blamed.

But what we need is co operation from every corner of the city, which definitely includes top corporates, builders, politicians & off course a common citizen to chalk out a wonderful plan to make sure that current situation never recures again.

People should create their own system of desposing off the garbage in such a way that, it does not affect the nature by clogging the water or drainage system.

You can prevent another 'terrible Tuesday' in Mumbai
by surekha tenneti venugopal on Aug 04, 2005 07:56 AM  Permalink

One of the Mumbaikars has written about Mumbai's slums leaving Calcutta's behind.
The day Calcutta gets flooded like Mumbai was recently, 90% of the city will be gone- so much is in a continuous state of upheavel and filthy disarray there all the time, for years on end.
At least Mumbai, with its inmates wanting to improve, and with their business-like minds, can rebuild and prevent what's happened now.
As has been rightly said, the slums have to be dealt with in a constructive manner, and the drainage system immediately improved- these two are indeed the Government's responsibility.
But the common man of Mumbai must stop throwing things on the roads, must stop ignoring garbage and filth in his everyday life, he must take his civic responsibilities of keeping his roads, surroundings, and drains clean. He must stop building illegal and encroaching constructions at every nook and corner of the city; he must help authorities in bringing to their notice such constructions taking place. In short, with a sprawling and vibrant business-city at stake, the Mumbaikar must fast become like the European- be very, very particular and proud about the discipline in the city he lives in

Sunshine after the rain?
by Madhura Patwardhan on Aug 04, 2005 01:51 AM  Permalink

It is really tragic as to what happened because of the downpour. It is true thousands of people suffered and many lost their lives. What stands out apart from the inefficiency of the management system is the true spirit of a mumbaikar. People helped each other, helped little kids, ole people without any discrimintion of cast or creed. Many went out of their way to give a helping hand to the trapped unfortunate victims putting themselves in grave danger. If you can sacrifice your time and almost your life to save another's, can't you strive to become more independant and stop relying on the government and corrupt officials to make decisions and impement them?. I am sure each mumbaikar deep inside is filled with the urge to do something, to come up and rise above the tortures which have always been inflicted on this beautiful city, be it bomblasts or nature's will. This is the time to come together and put aside our differences and fight for a better mumbai, a city which can and will shine above all when the people living in it learn to love and respect it. Here's to a cleaner and greener mumbai in the years to come.

plastic love
by shailesh on Aug 03, 2005 11:50 PM  Permalink

I am forced to tell that we mumbaikers are very attached to plastic/polythene bags. Thats why every second person on the road is seen carring one. We are all so much attached to these bags that not one of us has been successful in stopping the usage of these. Ultimately all this goes out into the open and turn our city into a garbage dump.
Separating the dry and wet garbage system has been failed. No one wants to do all that , instead people like to put the biodegradable waste into polythene bags and throw it into the dump. Whats fun one gets in doing all this? Atlast everything gets collected into the drainage systems and chokes the water passages, thus contributing to the floodings. So instead of just blaming the govt first we must see what harm we people are doing to the city we love so much.
This is the time to become wise now , or the nature will take a greater revange on the city next time , this time it was only a dose.

Management
by Sumeet Punjabi on Aug 03, 2005 11:10 PM  Permalink

Mumbaikers are not to be blamed.

There is a manager to every thing - an engine of a train - a leader of a group.

CM should get up and take these things serious, the best way to get rid out of this situation is to remove slums and get everybody into apartments.

Secondly, weather dept. should update there systems.

There should be an over drive train which should be available at every 5 mins at each station, where public is not disrupted.

Security to un necessary ministers and there travelling cost should be cut to even the expenses with these types of disasters.

If we cannot ignore it and have to live with it. then atleast we should know the damage - by the weather men and transport - to let all people in.

I think this plan will be done somewhere in 2020s.

But mumbaikers are strong men. Nothing could stop us.
