Long term planning
by Kirit Raja on Aug 02, 2005 11:09 PM  Permalink

For this particular incident, government should call military for help. But as a long term plan here are the suggestions:

1) Form a disaster management department which is independent body. There should not be any government interference. Give them extensive training, equip them with the latest tools and periodically update them with the latest technology.

2) Encourage businesses to move in the surrounding areas of Mumbai. Connect them with express highways and rail system.

3) Encourage tele-working (working from home or from a remote office) where ever possible.

4) Develop an underground rail network.

5) Make telecommunication system insulated from natural disaster.

6) Make the drainage system more effective.

7) Train people to work effectively and manage the situation during natural disasters.

Stop blaming the rains'
by nidhish kulkarni on Aug 02, 2005 11:00 PM  Permalink

We are talking lot about this rain from last tuesday. but mumbai seen this kind of rain so many times in past. we have to blame the buerocrats, our so called selfish politicians and the persond who are responciable in city devlopment. the basic infrastrcture in mumbai is still same what we had during british raj. we should hand over this country for out future back to british or americans so that we can compare with there level of devlopment. Now we are actuly in 19th century and want to go to 18th. this is the way of our devlopment.

Don't blame the rains
by Anand Rajadhyaksha on Aug 02, 2005 10:57 PM  Permalink

Blame the politicians who created vote banks at the wrong places.

Blame the politicians again who bulldozed the authorities into regularizing slum colonies located in dangerous places.

Blame the authorities for not recognising the value of proper drainage.

And blame the people for lack of civic sense; for throwing plastic garbage into open gutters, for not walking up to the nearest garbage dump, but dumping garbage just a little away from home so your home is clear.

Salam Mumbai
by B. Aswani on Aug 02, 2005 10:47 PM  Permalink

All of us unite and ask the authorities to give account for their apathy towards us Mumbaikers...Someone should be held accountable.
But as all of us know it would end up with Passing the Parcel..game. they are all the same.
Dont we have any honest mumbaiker who can stand up and ask the government to shape up or shape out. Boot out all the non-performers in the key posts and restore faith in a common man.
But as I write this, I know its futile. These lots are thick skinned. Watching tragedies and commenting on them has been their learning curve for surviving in the profession they are.
We feel helpless in such tragic situations. With Mumbai being the Commercial Capital of India, where are all the monies going? to Delhi? and why we denizens are deprived of all the necessities?
someone has to answer. In the meanwhile, let us go about to restore Mumbai back, each one in their own way.
I am proud to be a Mumbaiker, and so would be all those who are voicing their concern.

responsibility
by Monish Navlani on Aug 02, 2005 10:45 PM  Permalink

it's not the government alone who's to be blamed for massive floodings across the city... we as citizens are much more responsible for the havoc. every summer government spends millions of rupees on cleaning the storm water drains and we keep littering on roads to choke the cleaned drains again. if we could just start using the dustbins more frequently and stop littering the roads we will definitely have better monsoons in future and not the terrible floodings and road blocks like this year

Stop blaming rains
by S.Mohan on Aug 02, 2005 10:40 PM  Permalink

One party is happy with the dance bar bill passed. other one is happy that a split in opposition, third one is happy that they 421 crore deal. When they enjoy, this rain. At last they woke up and do the rescue now. Be happy. Because we have to wait for another 4 or 5 years to punish them in elections.

Our Weatherman should be sent on the defunct Shuttle
by B. Aswani on Aug 02, 2005 10:40 PM  Permalink

My heart goes out for the downtrodden denizens of Mumbai, living in every non concievable piece of land, except trees they are all over. There has been virtual Genocide of them by the Rain Gods and our Government is the mute spectator aka Third Reich, almost.
The weatherman should've been sent aboard Discovery, the defunct shuttle. He wakes up only after disaster hits in its full fury. Aftermath, he wakes up and warns Mumbai of heavy to very heavy rainfall for next 48 hrs. Its been going on since 26th. His 48 hours seem to stretch to infinity.
Either send these jokers back to Geography school and put a professional or shut down the Weather mimicry. It costs us lot of money to keep the jokers dancing for one whole year, except few days during monsoons.
What did they do while Tsunami was expected......
There should be some accounting to be done by our Chief Minister and also by the Prime Minister.
All weather reports that are published are hacked up from either American Satellite or BBC/NBC.
Let us all pray for quick restoration of services in full.
Johny Joseph has gone in a hiding. Let him come out and reach out to those who need them. Fortunately, some of us dont need him.

dont blame goverment or nature
by alikarayath on Aug 02, 2005 10:38 PM  Permalink

like in any disaster people and media strted blaming goverment and its mechinery.even with state of the art technology natural calamities are unpredictable.very rare cases it do.not only in india but other developed nations also.the only thing we can do with this technology is we can minimize the aftermaths.in the case of mumbai blocking of water ways and uncontrolled cunstruction activities are the main reasons of flood.
nature has its own way and laws.we in the name of development intreptting its ways.
in india we reqire a master plan for land usage in metros and other areas.any cunstructiopn activities should adhere this plans&laws.
always prevention is better than cure.
