What does this teach us?
by Nicholas on Jan 11, 2008 03:20 PM  Permalink

So what does this teach us? It tells us to use Rediffmail if you are not concerned about privacy. Let's all use Gmail as personal accounts and Rediffmail for signing up for spam. If the government wants to tap the account, all they'll get is the junk they deserve.

Interesting how Rediff complied without verifying the antecedents of a lower-ranked police officer. I thought under the IT act, only the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police and above can investigate such cases.

Good to know
by DV Nayak on Jan 11, 2008 03:10 PM  Permalink

... that Rediff wishes to protect users' privacy. Whatever your capacity to achieve the goal around 90-100%. As they say in the GenNext ads - shuruaat to karo, badlega India.

Who is reading my mail?
by Murli Manohar on Jul 16, 2007 11:33 AM  Permalink

Ideally speaking, a government exists due to a common will of the people being governed by it. Going by this logic, it is necessary for it to take all the step to maintain law and order and ensure security and welfare of the people. The step could be tracking of mail (incl. e-mail) or even tracking of face to face contacts. On the other hand, it is also possible that those in power start using their position for personal purposes. The issue is very sensitive and requires proper legislation.

who is reading my mail?

God, this is scary. Whoever thought that my mail is not my own and is open to disclosure given the situation?

e-mail

Sir,
Please try to be practicle, nothing has changed from posst colonial and post colonial era. If any thing has changed it is only the corruption and high handedness of those in Power. Colonial rulers had a bit of shame while post colonials are shameless and are in fact in the race for being more corrupt and shameless. We owe this characterlessness to our bloved leaders who have been in office from independence.

interesting and touching
by Alok on Oct 16, 2006 06:16 PM  Permalink

I dont think he wants to convey anything (though that "how we protect mortals from the bigger picture" is a bit arrogant ;) ).
Everyman in his job is always privy to certain information and this is no different.
However I do appreciate the fact that he has brought out the fact that hosting public utility services like email can have its own drawbacks.
Then again, if someone makes an allegation "why is rediff hosting this service if it isnt making money blah blah" will rediff actually say they are doing it for the greater good of all mankind? Or will they be bold enough and show us how they are being funded? I mean the cops are right too, it could be a genuine law and order case as the cops see it and they will be suspicious of someone like rediff.

What does he want to convey? The columns is inconclusive.

Re: Privacy
by Rehena on Oct 15, 2006 10:09 PM  Permalink

So what I infer from reading this article is,
1. The rules under "I Accept" pertains only to us and not to the Email Service provider!
2. The long list about Privacy rules and regulations is just for name sake and can be overthrown anytime if backed with top person.
3. This breaks the trust, that the person(who opens an account) has on the service provider.

Nonsense
by narka on Oct 15, 2006 08:08 PM  Permalink

This is utter nonsense. I have a question for the sub-inspector and one for Mr.Balakrishnan.

1. So if the "suspects" are using Yahoo!, is the sub-inspector going to call up Terry Semel in Sunnyvale, California ? Or if they are using Gmail, is he going to call up Larry Page in Mountain View ? I can guess the answer. So, does that mean for privacy, Indians should stop using rediffmail ?

2. One question for Mr. Balakrishnan. In the case where such information is given to the "authorities", does rediff have a written policy where it is required to inform the user that this has taken place ?
