Rather than discuss the fluency and command in any one particular language can we not all understand that however badly delivered, if what is said can convey the intent then the purpose of language is served. If we are not natives of a particular land, just remember that visitors from other places who come to our native land also face similar problems. Most of the contributors to these pages are IT/BPO personnel who have access to the net at all times and, if one were to comb many of these posts one would find that an English professor would very well have some critical comments to make!!We are talking of well educated people who cannot handle the language with flair then, on what basis are the locals in any place, with their meagre educational background, being criticised for not speaking good english???

I appreciate what you have said and agree with you cent percent! Language is no barrier coz good hosts talk from their heart and such languages can be understood by any respectable human.
Very well written article. Wynad is truly lovely and quite different from other touristy places. I was there too, but only for a day trip from Calicut. I would like to go back for a longer stay and this article has convinced me to go sooner rather than later.

There is absolutely no doubt that Kerala is very rich in nature and beatutiful places. But the people of Kerala because of their too much love towards communism and politics have made it impossible to any industry to prosper. May be lack of industrial activity is responsible to save nature's beauty!!

Raam, You are absolutely right. I am praying that the new by pass road coming in front of my house is delayed as much as possible. Of course the new road will increase the value of land in our village, but it will create more pollution and spoil the virginity of our village.
Cont.. In and Out India Kerala have a good reputation. For Litracy, hardworking people, health care and all. We also proud of it. But look at your suroundings! Cleanliness not only limited our body or inside the house we should keep our suroundings too clean. stop throwing garbage in your naibours gate or roadside. Stop all harthals and Bands, for any reason harthal or band never be a solution for solving any issue. It created more issues only. Stop hrs of road blocking processionsby political parties, trade unions or temples festivals, mosqes, Church. Find another way to shoe off. respect others right to free movement. Stop Agressive Driving respect other drivers small vehicles and pedestains. In Kerala by road accident thousands get killed or serously injured every year much more than any other state. One of the other reasons most of the roads are not enough wide, and even NH are not one ways. Malayalee will learn other laguages quickly when starts living other places, In Kerala if educated in Malayalam medium school then he/she had masters degree can't speak fluent english. But once he practice(go out of kerala) learn well. Speaking English should not be counted as knowledge. like many other languages its only a language. For exp: All Nigerians speak English as their Language. many of them cannot even write own name.
Our govt as well individuals should take inetiative to correct mistakes we practice in day to day life. Then we can Proudly claime we are livi

KERALA IS A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY, THANKS TO COMMUNIST GOVT, THE BEAUTY OF KERALA REMAIN THE SAME WITHOUT MUCH POLLUTION. I APPRECIATE THE EFFORTS TAKEN BY STATE TOURISM DEPT., BUT STILL THE QUALITY OF SERVICES NEEDS TO IMPROVE A LOT.VISIT PONMUDI ,ITS REALLY A GOOD PEACEFUL HONEYMOON HILL RESORT, 68KMS FROM TRIVANDRUM. CALL 04722890230
In Kerala many beutifull place to visit. Wayanad is one of the best as explined above. If you vist September to january she is realy beautiful. While promoting tourism in Kerala Govt must give some guideline to to the people how to behave with tourist. If we correct the bad things Kerala will become real God own Country. Keralites must change their attitude. here we read people writing their bad experience, many got angry with them. Instead getting angry we must try to correct our mistakes. Part of my job I travelled 16 countries in Europe, Africa and middle east. As well I travelled in India visits many tourist places and temples,of Kerala, TN,AP,Karnataka,Goa, Maharstra, Delhi, Gujarat, visited. There are some wrong practices Malayalees should be corrected. people must change their attitude towards tourists. Myself is a malayalee I had many bad experiences in Kerala. many times people directed me wrong roads when asked. They just take it as joke to fooling straingers. Many places road nameboards we cannot read 'Dyfi' or 'ndf' something may be written on top or some union meeting posters there. Some times the Police also not show any politeness to guide you when asked. If its in Thamilnad or Karnataka or Andra or Goa peoples aproach is entirly friendly. Police also guide you even he is busy with trafic controlling.

I don't know as to why you should get upset. No one is berating anybody. People are trying to point out the shortcomings so that you improve and become good citizens. Don't compare Japan/Germany/France etc. with Kerala

Local's Attitude - "A big Zero"
Child Abuse - No. 1
Downright Hypocrites
Education hasn't made a difference to the people's attitude. They still are orthodox, arrogant and behave like sticklers.
Someone mentioned Kerala as a country....wonder how it would survive on its own with spices & coconuts as the sole produce and housewives, kids and senile oldies left to run the country.
I had been to Wayanad last year and the experience was ok ok. Last weekend I had been to Coorg famously known as Scotland of India. I was wonderstruck at the beauty of Coorg and its coffee estates/falls/wildlife. Please do not miss Dubare Elephant Camp, Iruppu Water falls and The Golden Temple at Coorg. At Dubare Elephant you can get real close to elephants and if you want can bathe them and watch them perform exercises. And at Irupu falls you can have a cool shower. Truly beautiful and a paradise.
Ohh..Wayanad is undoubtedly one its kind..I had been to the place last year along with my office colleagues..Kuruva Island and Suchipura waterfall were truely amazing...i still virtually experience the exotic beauty of Wayanad...
The main problem tourist have to face in Kerala is language. First you don't find English Language Board in Kerala and when you speak people in English you rarely get english answers. I would request Mr. Achutanandan- Hr. Chief Minister to implement English name board in Kerala, atleast in important tourism places.

being a malayalee living outside kerala, this is a good suggestion. Govt should implement rules to change the board names atleast in English and of course in Hindi beieng our national language.

don't repeat this stupidity again...among all the states in india only in kerala you find people speaking some decent english(to some extend hindi also) even in the remote areas...we very well know what kind of language you hear once you move out of b'lore...there's no need to have english board to cater your need...the same problem we used to face when we go to the hindi heartland or to the extreme noethern part of india...we never complain abt that, rather we try to adjust in the maximum possible way...atleast in kerala the attiude of the people is much better when compared to other places...so please try to adjust with us...

Dear Nithin I am afraid if you cannot adjust to a simple and very common suggestion of Dear Prashanth, how u will adjust in Kerala. What Prashanth suggests and probably u too suggest that those coming from other part of the country or globe do face these type of problems and that can be minimised if a common language is used for name boards.Don't ge offended simply.

no need to get so angry, we also faced same problem, People speak english in Kerala and all over india but while travelling we need to interact with people staying in small vilages.... neither they speak english nor hindi, and most imp u can not claim that attitude of people is much better.....recently i have visited Sikkim the localites there will win your heart and i am sure u would love to visit the place again and again with this they alo try their best to speak english as well as hindi.

Hi all To my experiences what i found was that in kerala u will find english nameboards everywjere, even in small towns which u can never dream in the hindi heartland. When it comes to english, come on people in UPor bihar even in cities struggle with englis, in kerala yea they r not fluent but surely revert to u in broken english. Some points that some pointed out is very true, people will misguide u beautifully, watz the fun in tat, especially in parts down south trivandrum, quilon i did have very bad experience.Wat so ever Kerala is marvellous, yep waynad is heaven, will go back there, nd enroute calicut biryani, banana chips and halwa is a must.

Why should you write boards in English ( although they are everywhere in Kerala)? If you go to France , all boards are in French and even if you try to speak to someone in English they will reply to you in French. Obviously they value their language. If you want to come to Kerala , atleast have a minimum understanding of Malayalam , Same goes with other states ...then you wont have any problems.

Hi, If you travel to other states surely you will chang your comment. Compared to others states number of people who can understand/mange english is more. YOu travel to outside city in your state Karnataka. You will u/stand how better keralites are. In kerala you can find boards in English more than TN & Karnataka. In TN & Kar. you can find the route board in buses only in Tamil and we have to identify only using number. In these two states even the registration number of most of the vehicles are written in regional language!!!

Prashanth has just ponted out his Inconvenience being in kerala, there is nothing to take it personal and start abusing other sates. If we want kerala to be a better tourist place, we have to be a well cultured and tolerant host fist. Let us be more broad minded and correct our deficiencies to make Kerala truely a God's own country.

prashanth said is a stupdity or may be he never visited kerala... u can find 2 types of landmark boards throught kerala 1. state road department 2. tourist department
and in the case u travelling in NH u can find their boards also
and even in very remote village u can see ATLEAST a board of some shop written in English where the place name is clearly written...
so Gaffoor, next time before admitting our missings or mistakes, plz think twice whether there is some stuff in the compliant....
