My sympathies with the subject. But i have reservations about the attempt to generalise the situation at call centers
All this talk of call centers taking away your life and making you a slave is far-fetched..I personally know many of my friends working in call centers in B`lore who are happy with the job and dont have such complaints .. Thr maybe exceptions but a very small percentage and thr is no doubt in my mind tht it should be regularised
hey mukherjee i pity on u. i am also the same as u, employed in a BPO firm but not on the call centre but of financial services at hyderabad. Yes, these BPO firms levy a lot of work pressure but here in hyderabad it's not as harsh as u said in kolkata. but these is the tie that we indians earn money. u can't expect a job of 7,500 at the age of 20. work hard but not ur earlier firm as those firms as not worthful for working. all BPO's are not similar.
Hi Although the article makes good reading, it does not present the reality of the industry as of today. Although initially the call centers were of the kind as mentioned in the stry, there has been a wave of change in terms of perople management and stress reduction. Today an agents utilisation level is tracked and measured. An acceptable level of utilsation would be around 65%%, which means the agent on call should not be talking not more than 65% of his time on the phone. The industry realises that burnout is an serious issue to its business. Infact, with increasing competition, any industry not following this practise of employee friendly HR Practises lose out due to attrition.
Call centres are profit making organisations for those who set up those not for the employee.the employees are definitely exploited, because the kind of money they pay is negligible as compared to that paid for the same job in UK or USA. The workers are like cyber coolies, they place large advertisements in the leading newspapers of India for recruitment every week, which has caused parents to force their children to work in a call centre. The education of An MBA, MCA or B.Tech is a waste in a call centre because a 10+2 is also working in the same designation. The job satisfaction is also missing. No qualified neurologist will ever suggest to work late nights because once a neurological order happens ,can never ne treated or if there is a treatment, the treatment will be more costly than they pay.
Working at call center definitely fetches more money, specially to simple gradutes, they( may be all) might not get this much money anywhere else. Also the job situation forces the well qualified people, engineers, MBAs etc to opt for this. It's not only medically that call centres are harmful for the people but also the culture at the work places is very dangerous specially for the girls. Recently a survey revealed, people easily get involved in sexual activities, initially it might look good but actually it can even shatter the family life.
I am studying in uk, and use to work part-time at a call centre. This guy is right, its one of the worst jobs i ever did. But...we must think again about it.
These people here are outsourcing everything to India. India is getting employment opportunities. Students can make good money although it is painfull. Lets just say, work for a while, make the money and leave. So that these companies do not turn their backs and leave. They are adding to the infrastructure. And I am sure soon there will be better work conditions. They will put them in place coz no where in world will these big companies get such cheap labour.
I agree completely. Its a worthless job. I can only pity young people back home in India. Young students in US know nothing but to party all the time while our own students who are 100 times more talented (literally) have to settle for extremely laborius and boring work such as call centers and software 'services'(YUK!). Govt should put young brains to better use in science, astronomy and mathematics instead of mind numbing jobs such as software and call centers.
The choice of joining call centres emerges from the horizon of lack of employment/under employment conditions. The youngsters who donot have potential to compete for elite jobs/colleges, fall prey to this luring "Rich - overnight" mirage. If the concept of "First deserve, then desire" is followed things would change. Our increased " wants" are main culprit - why crave for costly cars, eating fast food, ever ringing ultra mod mobile, costly jeans. We must learn to distinguish between "Wants" & "Needs"
Why spoil health by odd timings of job, wrong time eating etc just for some quick money. Instead concentrate on education which has been sent on a backseat. There are other ways of making money - lets explore them like investment in shares, property etc and utilise the money so far earned instead of "Show-OFF".
