I have worked in a call centre for 02 years i did enjoy my job, but it does depend upon your managers how you stick on in this industry your managers are just looking for oppurtunities to climb heights in a short span of time so we dont get the oppurtunities in life to grow in this industry.
I really dont think call centres are bad! I work for a call centre in Mumbai and its a great experince! Yes i agree that you do earn a good amount of salary, but at the same time u do loose some activities like parting, friends and other fun stuff! But hello if u wanna work u have to sacrifice these things? and besides most of the call centres give u a great holiday package for example saturday and sunday off! so why crib and argue on more things? U have to grow up some day and accept some responsibilties! I think call centre's are not just work work work & work BUT it is work and play! Some people just dont get that!
I really dont understand why the industry which has been contributing to country's economy in a big way is so under rated and always disgraced.
By publishing these kind of stories or for that matter some bad incidents what does people want to prove. I am working in this industry for last three years and have seen many more sucess stories than these kind of incidents. It all matters how you take your work, this kind of presure is there in every industry , in marketing there are targets to meet, in S/W development there are deadlines. Even doctors have to attend patients one after other still people like to highlight each and every small incident happened in the call center industry.
I do understand call center work force have to work in odd shifts but times re changing, almost all the industries are working in shifts so why always a hue and cry about call center. if any one of you( all the fake writers) ever work in a call center then you would probably realise what it takes to handle a human's query.
The BPO and ITES based economy is going to play a dominant part...at least in this country. So work at this services cannot be neglected..if not rerverred.
The only issue here is to have a sunchronized HR model to take care the employee issues.Suitable Job analysis, job design and job enrichnent practices needs to be explored to suit the working model to improve the operational efficiency of the system.Motivation should be the equally imprortant priority. So it is not the employees, rather , gurus and HR bosses to sit down and devise the correct and realistic work method.
BPO services is crowded by the age group 20-28 at most of the cases. The occupatioal health and hazard may not be visible in this group at once, however they creep from behind and becomes more ruthless when the age goes by.HR has to have the constant rehabilitation mechanism for these aspects for call centre workers. This may be enforced and enacted by a suitable goverment law.
Call centers are primarily interested in making money. All other considerations are unimportant - no matter how much management tries to convince you otherwise. It is not unusual for a call center senior manager to tell you that you are as good as your last job (no one remembers how well you have been doing in the past), or that with or without you the call center will continue. In such circumstances, how will an employee ever have pride in his/her work. While I understand no employee is indispensable, call centers make it a point to take full advantage of this idea (i.e. none is indispensable) to exploit their young, brimming employees. One word of advice to youngsters considering call center employment. Do so only if you have an exit plan-that is, you know you will leave in a short period of time, maybe after making/saving so much money/getting a better job in another industry. Or if you know that you can make a cultural difference within the BPO (difficult option). If you feel like you will go with the flow, then do not join a BPO - you will be squeezed. Just remember there are better options out there which will at least help you keep your peace/soul.
India is a land of exploitation. The british exploited us till 1947 and now the BPO's. My wife here in England also works for a call centre in CSC UK and does hardly any work and lands up with a neat 23000 Pounds a year. Whereas in India where all the grey matter is , we seem to find peanuts being paid to them. What is this? clear and crystal exploitation. Its about time the government started introducing minimum wage rates, premium pay for night shifts and better employer and employee relationship.
i really do not know why call centre work is deemed so glamorous in India. here in the UK call centre work is seen as a low status job undertaken by staff with low or no qualifications. the fact that this kind of work is moving to India means that Indian graduates cannot even command the wages that these ill qualified people in the UK get. until Indians can learn to value themselves more highly, i am afraid they will remain the cheap labourers of the world.
I dont think the generalization of poor work environment/policies in call centers is correct. Most people who join call centers are fresh out of college. They have never worked before. I have grown up with this industry. I have also seen the work culture / health hazards in the other industries and there are half as many health hazards in the call center environment as compared to the manufacturing side. I agree there is pressure and stress, but then compare a call center executive to his counterpart in any other industry in India....what is the remuneration there? Compare the job of a cards tele sales exective to that of a field sales executive in India and the call center job will appear so much more cozy. Outside our public sector, life is very competitive and stressful in most industries. I anyways do not favour the idea of labour unions, we can see what they have done to the quality f labour...its common sense, why do most people work hard! to grow or to retain the job..the moment you bring in job security, unions, etc. the quality of labour will go down (at least in the indian scenario). why are we hearing so much resentment from kolkata n not delhi or banglr..red flag DNA :)
Hi friends this is bryan here, I'm working in a call center in Kolkata for some months. I worked in some of the bigshot companies & now I'm in my home state again & joined a pretty kool company.
