I agree with your concern but think little different from you. Yes the money being showered on cricketers is amazing. I suppose BCCI can and should organise one or two tournament every year, where it plays for charity. All the money collected can go for benifit of poor and stting up some infrastructure for poors, and also other games like Football, Hockey, athelitics etc.
yesterday, i read the article; although i agreed with many of the points discussed, still i thought article was untimely or unwanted. but today, after knowing the plight of hockey players, especially after statement from the hockey coach joquim who got india to three back to back victories, now i think, that even ckt fans shud come out of their dream and ponder over the factuality. pl look at the way our so called heroes whum we treated as god, were given a rude treatment by Maharashtra politicians esp. NCP in Wankhede stadium. players toil on the field, but officials are there to take credit for their achievement. it is nothing but commercialisation of ckt, and now politicisation of it. fans r taken for a ride emotionally by the media for increasing their TRPs for getting more ad revenue. secondly pl ask abt the fan behaviour to Mr. Wadekar who won series in 1971 in wi and eng. the welcome given to their team and subsequently when they lost and the welcome they got from fans. even now, once the euphoria is over, the players will be brought back to earth, when they start losing against ausi even in a single match. so it is for fans to understand the gimmicks of commercials players including bcci officials hand in glove with the media. we give cricketers as well as other sports personalities equal treatment so that no one feels humiliated. i firmly believe, t20 performance was a brilliant n needs to be pondered over, let our players be encouraged n praised for their a

I agree. We in India r just cricket crazy, rather passive ckt WATCHER generation. and not producing active cricket players eg. Pace battery like shoaib, bret lee, bond, etc. fit and agile players like Rhodes.
First of all congratulation for looking the cricket in right way. We Indians may be different in many respects but one thing that is dead-sure is the mentality of making people God. We have followers and only followers all the way. No one wants to be a leader and is more than happy in clapping for the success of others. And where it is no the case, there is no healthy competition either, its just jealousy and rivalry . Whether it be an unemployed young man or a software professional, everyone has found a great excuse in cricket for their mentality of "work only to survive". People will boast the record like it is helping the mankind, try to be the greatest analyzer even born for this game and thus shamelessly waste their lives which they could have used for the betterment of self and society. How many people are learning commitment, importance of fitness, decision making quality. For God's sake, move away from your television. "Khud kahi jakar cricket khelo naa, apna stamina badao, apna reaction-time improve karo, team mein kaam karna sikho. Kab tak, aakhir kab tak bas TV dekhkar taliyaan bajate rahoge." Don't let anything, anything means ANYTHING, overrides your life. Life is much more than a game, much more than an action, much more than a blind-devotion. Open your eyes and see the beauty of life. GO, GET SOME SUCCESS FOR YOURSELF RATHER THAN ONLY ENJOYING OTHERS'S.

Harsha jee, Agree with your economic relevance but in my view it is stretched too far.
Yes, with money you can exist but existence is different from living. Is it not? Does money bring passion in life? For many, excluding you or me, cricket is a passion. Many poor, too, are passionate about the game. Agree that proper living facility, GDP, per capita income and infrastructure etc. are all important. But do you think having all that will make cheerful? Is there a straightforward relation between them?
To put your analogy in business case: Can CEO and board of directors of a public company declare handsome bonus for key contributor to success? Of course they do. Cricket is money making machine and with handsome income of 6520 million INR per year, do you still believe Yuvraj got as much as a company CEO would get? I think not.
There are things we do not measure with question or IF and THEN. Srisanth could have dropped the catch but fortunately he has not and thus the celebrations. What if I would have chosen a different career path than becoming an engineer? God knows. Its all fate and destiny but we do not know that until it gets uncovered.
Sportsmen of popular games are icons of young generation and children learn a good deal from them. I was fortunate to witness Michael Jordan playing during my college days and I have learned a lot just by seeing him approaching the game of basket ball. Socialists may argue it is waste of money. For Capitalists it is marketing to make more money. You must first understand this is not Tax payers money but BCCI giving away from what they made from Ads and other revenue. There are so many NGO's to support needy. Rs. 1 Crore can be collected in one night if few celebs do a stage show. Don't wine about it. Think what you can do and do it and rest will follow.

Agreed , Let BCCI give 10 Crores to its employee Yuvi .. but why the amount from state govt.. Kiske bap ka paisa hai .. Last month I received Star of the MOnth Award from my company .. will u agree if state govt gives me 10 lakh and a flat for that ????
I do not have numbers about what amount of money was spent by the government on those festivities. I would have assumed it was a chance for the government to get some money from BCCI. If BCCI wants to organise such kind celebrations it needs support from government like the security and traffic control etc.
I have to say BCCI should organise such an event. They are the people who should be promoting the game because that is in their best interest. They could have sold such events to Media, and other sponsors and made money out of it.
It is the effecient use of that money that government made for supporting this cause should be tracked for the causes that the author is reporting not about raising of that money.
Can we discuss balancing of budgets and not having fiscal deficits every year before we get into such discussions as that would be main event that will bring out the 80% people out of poverty and not by controlling spending on such events.
Dude.. i understand additional 1 crore rupees is a waste of govt money...I understand that 1 crore rupees should have been invested in bringing more employment to those who are suffering with poverty.... but stop the non-sense about no need of celebration.. what the hell... we didnt work as efficiently on one day JUST BECAUSE WE WERE HAPPY... i can count sooo many freaking days and hours when most of us did not feel good or energetic or happy or spirited enough to do our work.... DONT U KNOW EVEN THIS MUCH THAT WE WILL MORE PRODUCTIVE WHEN WE ARE HAPPY...
