CPM'S FOLLY

Where the Left will be, after the trust vote?. If UPA wins, there will be egg on the face of the entire Left and the deal will go through. If UPA fails, there will be elections, and the BJP is likely to come to power (with a depleted Left in Parliament). So their main purpose of keeping the communal BJP from power will be defeated. It is not all. The BJP Govt. was more friendly with the U.S. than UPA. What will prevent them from completing the nuclear deal? So Left is indirectly helping BJP and also the nuclear deal to be done with, while it gains nothing. In fact, the Left is playing to its vote bank in W.B., Kerala etc. to try to keep their vote bank intact. By defeating UPA, they think they can save their face before their followers in these States and try to maintain their power. But the people are watching and have their own idea about this drama. Propaganda alone will not save the Left here. This could well be the beginning of the end of Communism in India!

how does it matter where the cpm will be? WE ARE CONCERNED AS CITIZENS WHO ARE GOING TO PAY FOR THE N.ENERGY AND TAXES, IS IT BENEFICIAL TO ALL OF US? IF NOT THEN CPM IS DOING THE RIGHT THING,NOW IT IS NOT IDEOLOGY BUT COMMON SENSE, CAN WE NOT LOOK FOR ALTERNATES LIKE BIO FUEL FOR ENERGY, ALSO WIND/SOLAR/BIO GAS. IT IS THE GOVTS RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THEY DONOT SQUANDER PUBLIC MONEY.

My point is that the next Govt, whether Congress or BJP, with a simple majority could still go ahead with the deal, (because, as admitted by Karat himself, BJP is opposing the deal only to push for early elections). So Left is continuing with this hardline approach to keep its cadres happy and nothing good is going to come out of their folly. As for the deal, its an agreement, where both parties will be interested to gain from it. Why should we expect US to be philanthropic? The deal in its present shape leaves scope for India to pull out of it anytime and the situation would not be worse than what is now. On the other hand, right after Pokhran blast in 1974, the aim of India was to secure nuclear cooperation, without signing the NPT, which has been achieved by the present deal (The only country, which is not a NPT-signatory, being given such a deal by US or other counties)

the deal has still to be passed by us congress and the nsg hv to agree, dont u think too many ifs n buts , come to think a new us administration is coming to power shortly. but aside from that, do you think in what ever form the deal is , on the ground level does it make any diff in catering to our energy demands vis a vis the investments, and why no research on laternatives, bio fuel/gas/wind /solar they are much cheaper and effective.

But we have a population of 110 crores already, and we have to explore all options, including nuclear energy, to overcome the power crisis. Moreover, the nuclear deal is a long term step for using the vast Thorium deposits India have (32% of total world resources) in the third stage. This will be possible only after Uranium-based Ist stage and Plutonium-based IInd stage. If Congress is showing undue haste, the Left are blocking it only on ideological basis; and BJP merely on opportunism. If BJP were in power today, they would have gladly gone ahead with the deal, because they were more eager to befriend US, Israel etc. Please recall the efforts of Vajpayee & Jaswant Singh.

I agree with u. Moreover, if u read China's reaction when the deal was announced (google old newspapers of China), you will realise that China is against this deal. One wonders whether the Communists of India are taking the directives from China (it used to be the Soviet Union earlier).

don't care for left or BJP; but don't want the deal to take place.... i work very hard and pay tax... i know how tough it is for the tax payer. if 300 billion is spent on the nuclear technology and then it is scrapped, then sonia has a place to go (Italy); but where do we go? neway MMS is old; but what about u and me? india will sink with the nuclear deal.

thats the part the government hasn't spoken about. guarantees, and one sided deal - withdrawal of support from usa halfway. and can we go to the other countries for nuclear supply.

usa has formed coteries. they have ganged up like the old days - its the economic cold war now. china, russia and guys like iran, libya are on one side. commies, scumbags like sudan/ darfur - where china is playing truant.

india is left midway, neither with usa, nor with russia. like the old days of NAM. which kinda sucks - even though we are right. we have made many a mistakes, and somewhere between 75 and the 90s, we screwed up bigtime with bilateral relations. we were "koop-mandooks".

given the bad blood between bjp and congress - the way everyone treats bjp ( press and congress) as a communal party and dont want anything bjp. like for eg. somnath - who's supposed to be an impartial speaker.
its no wonder that we dont have a coherent foreign policy till date - how will we with so much discord inside, we have no time for a foreign policy. and probably the reason why bjp need not support this deal, and also should not.

the worrying thing is we dont have any visionary. rahul gandhi the heir apparent is worrying. same with bjp with not many young leaders. there's nothing left in left. regional parties are totally selfish. we need the big 2 to clean up their act.

Only stating the obvious. Do we need to work for any multinational to criticise the Left?
