I completely buy the point of Kes Som...out of our sheer frustation of losing in every aspect of sports... and political and social system.. any tinge or sign of indianness in any successful person makes us to jump it to claim it to be ourss.. look at the way we brust in jubliation and with media going crazy just becos presidential candidate Obama had some locket of lord Hanuman with him...or for the matter.. if we look at all our old movies we have always shown all those who left the country as traitors of country and culture..but today we are dying to get their notice and their dollars and pounds to nurture our country...
On cricket... its a shame the man who changed the course of the game and made it Cricket the way see it today is Dalmiya...but we never leave any chance to make his life a hell...
Similarly is the case with KPS Gill..who thrases out militancy from punjab....but now screwed up in number of so called human rights cases by the families of militantz.. waht a tradegy... moreover... the very player of hoceky just refuses to win... and gill is made the scapegoat... waht about thiss Kalmadi... the most useless head of olympic federation... or say priayranjan das munshi..who is at helm of affair of football federation for ages.... or many his fellow collegues..
This is what my beloved nation is....
SOLUTION....
We need Dalmiya type of people in every sport..who give a damm to culture of losing and only concerned about profit and profess

I think that it is an unnecessary waste of our time and even of life, to feel unhappy at not winning medals at the Olympics. We do not have the infrastructure to produce such athletes and not likely to have any for a long time so why don't we just enjoy the games. Let us give our exploited people some good leadership and then maybe we will have some winners on the games fields. In the meanwhile let's celebrate Spelling Bees, Scrabulous, Hotmail, Chess and even cricket, all of which we are good at. let us also celebrate Carnatic and Hindustani music, Kuchipudi, Kathak and other dance forms, Kashmir's syncretic Islam, one crore Gods of Hinduism, the spiritual freedom that we give each other, Tandoori chicken, the Nano car, tea from the Nilgiris and Darjeeling, veg food from Woodlands, the Taj Mahal, the sand dunes of Rajasthan, the backwaters of Kerala and so much more. God could not have given us more. If the price of having all this is not have athletes winning medals then so be it. Madhav Das

your point is good. but its not only about feeling bad about not winning medals.its about the whole culture of being callous towards physical fitness . and to understand to excel in sport as in everything else one needs single minded determination not a balanced life with lots of friends ,parties , good colleges, cozy jobs , drinks ,dates ,nothing really should matter except to train and try your best to win . most successful athletes are imbalanced people who sacrifice a lot to do what they are doing . which is why cricket is so popular here . in cricket skill outweighs practise , you can have your cake and eat it too.

I am with you Sriram on what you say regarding sports etc. Some time ago there was a report on the happiest people on earth and Indians came pretty high on the list. I have friends in France who came visiting and told me that they absolutely love the freedom that we enjoy in India. I was quite surprised to know that everybody in France is continuously snooped on by the government. That includes public and private spaces so we do get a few things right. As we get better health care for everyone we should be able to win medals but until then feel good for many things that we enjoy. As for Raj Arora and his 'sour grapes' I have no idea what he is talking about.

ever heard of 'grapes are sour' so r u one of those who call the aussies cheats when they trash india and come olympics when u hear india stands no chnce of winnin then say oh forget it
I was taught swimming by a very promosing athlete Mahesh who is into small jobs as a coach just to make his ends meet. He had a lot of pride in his work and the system's neglect and humiliation was so apparent while taking lessons from him.

and also don't forget that by themselves, people will do ZERO to even help our country improve. They will NOT walk ten metres to put garbage/waste/gutka packets into a dustbin, but will throw, spit, urinate WHEREVER they feel like. It's like India is our dustbin and we shall keep only ourselves clean.
But try to enforce them to do basic stuff like cleanliness, and they will cry murder, they will say democracy is dead. And they will also say - "Tere baap ka road hai kya, jo main yahan nahin thook sakta?" Pathetic.
if we have amar singh , laloo yadav , and manmohan singh in our olympic contigent we may end up with the maximum gold medals. only drawback will be some players may cry foul and wave 1000 Dollar bundles in the stadium

They will definitely win all medals, gold, silver and bronze in corruption in that order.
We Indian are losers in Olympics, no doubt about that. But the Chinese have adopted an elaborate method of cheating at Olympics. They have hired most of the East German coaches, who are specialists in promoting systematic drug abuse by athletes & gymnasts. This fact is well known to the rest of the world but is conveniently glossed over in India due to the traditional pro-left bias of the media.
China is a country which is insecure and knows its limitations well, though it does not admit the same. They cannot compete with India in either enterprise or innovation so they are pushing us and exploiting the fact that our leadership is of dubious quality. Sorry for bringing in non-sports issues here but nothing can be viewed in isolation.
We need not have an inferiority complex vis-a-vis the Chinese and once we get strong and stable leadership in our country, we will overtake them. The nuclear deal with US is a step in the right direction.

Don't try to cover our weakness by blaming China unnecessarily. Drug abuse is not possible in Olympics. Do u mean to say all the inspectors in various Olympics r Chinese?
Chinese r far far ahead of us in almost all fields. B it sports, business, infrastructure, defence, nuclear energy, literacy, education, population control. They r biggest producer of steel in the world, India is 10th. Same is the situation in many other products. I hv been seeing large stores of Chinese products in US etc since 1992. Just using hate China policy will not take us anywhere.
Two things r responsible for India not getting any gold medal, and getting only one or two other medals. One is govt apathy to games. Most of the politicians r busy in making money, without any interest in sports.
The other is the craze of the countrymen for the useless and time consuming game cricket. This craze has been built by the media over a long period of time. Cricketers earn crores of rupees without any challenge, as very few countries play the game and India is not no 1 even in this group. Whereas players of other games do not get even basic equipments and facilities.

I agree Ram, like to add that our culture itself is pathetic towards sports in general. We like cricket because it is more a gamble then sports.
