We are no nation!!!!!!
by Partha Das on Jul 10, 2008 01:51 PM  Permalink

There can be no nation where the fallen are not revered and respected....Look at any of the world's superpowers or ex-superpowers.. Britain,France,Germany,Spain Japan,US.... Honouring the dead is of paramount importance...If we cant respect the value that drives people to give their lives for their country, we are not a country.... Frankly, the sense of nationalism doesnt exist in us anymore...We dont see ourselves as a nation of people, but as individuals living our lives... No one bothers if someone lays down his/her life for the country...blame not just ministers ,blame everyone... We never existed as a country for thousands of years until 1947..And thats still very evident.

After all, we, the Public and Govt also not showing any respect to living SOLDIERS. Then how we will respect the martyrs.
Actually we have to salute them since they are the fighters who allows us to dream/Live.

Actually they are getting the benefits of Liquor & others only. They & their family have to be treated as the TRUE ambassodors of the country. I am saluting them and thanking them to allow me to Dream, dream big...

Leaders children
by PRAVEEN SHETTY on Jul 10, 2008 01:44 PM  Permalink

martyrs & soldiers are just another words for the nation. They are considered similar to cricketers, actors & all thier acts of valour are made to look as common as cricketer winning a match...
The reasons are many it might be media, whole public are not bothered about history & our two thousand years under foreign rule.
presently when we look we cn see Tycoons sons becoming another mini-tycoon & acquiring companies in India & abroad,Political leaders children becoming MPs /MLAs & regrouping thier castes etc & speaking PEP words fo rthe general populace on TV,actors children becomingactors etc...& no one LEADER ,Mind it NOT a single leader whether of SAFFRON PARTY,LEFTIST,RIGHTIST,CONGRSS,SAMAJWADIS,SOCIALISTS etc want their children in the BATTLEFIELD..So it is left for the ordinary individual;s to try his careers in army for sake of job, stability whatever. He will be in the Borders so our leaders can keep on Building their EMPIRES inside the country.Historically this is the reason INDIA didnt acquire any outside nation/empire as there are enough LEADERS who ccan build EMPIRE inside the nation................?

No martyrs
by lakubo on Jul 10, 2008 01:44 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

With due respects to the departed souls, I would say it is not a question of martyrs or hero's. Everyone works for a living, some work for govt some for private sector. It is just a work hazard. If I die by accident on the way to work what happens? Do i become a martyr? Its a danger I am aware of. Didnt the govt or the dead were not aware of the dangers of wroking in Kabul?

I would put myself to care for living and respect the dead. No point in crying over the dead and forsaking the living which is very much the indian way thinking. THe living go to dogs but the dead who can bring no benefit to themselves nor to the living are fed, clothed, celebrated, millions are spent the dead, which is useless.
Take care of the living poor and hungry.

by Suhas. K on Jul 10, 2008 01:42 PM  Permalink

Since there is no money to make attending funerals I guess its even stupid to hope any politician will attend that. They take bribe for contract of coffins of martyrs is another story.

Respecting Martyrs
by Suram Verma on Jul 10, 2008 01:40 PM  Permalink

Going through the news in The Tribune, may be in Delhi Central govt. leaders are busy with new developments but in states particularly in Himachal where the ministers have nothing to do except making money for next five years did not have any time or sense to be avialvle to pay any respect at the funeral place of Martyr Mr.Roop Singh. It is really a shame on the part of HP leaders. Situation is slightly different in Punjab where at least some second level ministers could spare their time to visit the place of funeral for Mr.Pathania and pay their homage.
Leaders in general have nothing to do with the sacrifices for the country by any body except themselves or their trade or their kith and kins. Even if they bother a bit it will be only for their political benefit but not for the sake of homage in true sense.
People are so attached to these self centred leaders all around them that they feel ignored due to their (leaders) absence at such or other occasions which should not be there. People of the country should give minimum weightage to self centred leaders and should ignore them in dau to day life activities.

Blame it on the media
by Nitin Darji on Jul 10, 2008 01:39 PM  Permalink

If it is an American news network like CNN, the martyrs are eulogised on prime time. Channel space is entirely dedicated to the people who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. In India, channel space is dedicated to pseudo - secularism and politics, that is the tragedy.

Show some minimum courtesy
by guk on Jul 10, 2008 01:36 PM  Permalink

The government should show some minimum courtesy and sensitivity to the family of a deceased officer. It is common in India for the family of the deceased to know of the death of their dear ones through media. In many countries especially in the west, a senior government officer goes to the family of the deceased and conveys the news personally. Only after this the name of the deceased is released to the media. This is the least courtesy which the government can show to the family of the deceased. It is really painful for the wife of a soldier to hear the death of her husband through the 'breaking news' of a TV news channel. The media should also cooperate with the government while breaking such news.
