Sarkozy-more illusion than reality
by pooshan upadhyay on Jan 31, 2008 01:12 PM  Permalink

Sarkozy rose on to the global firmament, belying many detractors within France. He was perceived to be a modern statesman in the league of an Arafat,Putin or a Bush.He reflected great promise to steer the French economy out of doldrums into the same old mould of an acclaimed economic superpower. However latest reports reveal that Sarkozy is proving more of an illusion than reality. He has been hogging the limelight more for his glamourous life than for his economic reforms. The promise shown earlier needs to be substantiated by hardcore reformist ploicies ,the propaganda of which catapulted him to Elysee Palace

Big ticket deals
by ashok kumar on Jan 31, 2008 11:38 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

China signs Big ticket deals so easily and so often. In india, we have politicians too much concerned about the process, opposition political parties, left parties interference, etc. that deals cannot be struck even when it is most urgent for the country. Learn from China.

Sarkzy's visit
by S Kalra on Jan 31, 2008 11:32 AM  Permalink

Sarkozy's vist was very timely and suppotive to India's views on Security Council's memebhip , terroism, Nuclear deal and India sudents' status in France.
It is the media which which has distroted the visit's image more towards his private life ( girl friend ) and sikhs' turbans . I think , the media is not doing its duty for the benefit of the nation but only , inorder to get some extra TRP they creat masala news

Truly modern secular state
by Secular India on Jan 31, 2008 09:42 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

France is a model India must look upto. No crap is tolerated from any religious group - you are free to practice what you want in your private life - but the government will stay out of your relationship with God which is none of its business. India has distorted secularism by making it mean a proactive respect for all religions when it is not its business to either respect or disrespect any religion. In the end it ends up appeasing all religious groups thereby resulting in the communal mess that we have got into.

Not to fool ourselves by treating France as a Model to follow. In fact India has to look back to its own history to modernize and revitalize itself. Not to expect anybody would comfort or help (for ex. bring abundant electric power supply). In other words 'everything is for a price.'

- Mr. Sarcozy appears like a Napolian in French politics of our time (remember Napolian lost 50% of his battles against his sick Europian opponents), we will have to observe his career and see.

- France is traditionally inclined to becoming a pseudo-islamic type of nation over its course of long history - most often supporing sultans (often mad) (Turks, North Africans etc. some times sultans in India too), so its not a surprise they banned Turbonators wearing Turbons.

- France is part of the West. And Mr. Sarkozy is proud of it (I guess) - though he was born to Hungarian parents.

- Not the least to say - France is always the loser - definitely NOT something to emulate.

But with all sincerity I always wish them the best they can acheive.

- Ram

And do you think that wearing a turban
makes a Sikh holy? Some of the Sikhs
that I know who wear turbans are the
biggest crooks!

a crisp article
by Pradip Parekh on Jan 30, 2008 10:16 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

i appreciate the european writers resident in india providing crisp information in support of their view point, a fact noticeably absent from most indian writers (almost always of anti-hindu bend of mind). claude arpi is easily one of them.

i have visited france two times on business and found the french businessmen to be very professional and welcoming. they are quite agreeable to the use of english (the customary french putdowns in the usa is now unnecessary), and easy to do business with; the indian jewish-style hard bargaining approach is not frowned upon, unlike in germany. i think the hindus will benefit considerably if they gave the french a try, and they most certainly don't need to wait for the indian govt to provide lead. besides, which hindu does not like to learn new culture, and france has so much to offer culturally. the only problem for the hindus (which means vegetarians) in france is the food despite the fact that french food is always spoken of with considerable praise in the west. i hope vegetarianism becomes popular in europe as it has in the wonderful usa.
