This is a great deal with India having all the options. MAny peeps are whining about compromises. All US is saying is in spite of we not signing NPT, they will provide us with technology and fuel. NOT DONE WITH ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. We should look at it as a Principled stand from india, not as a compromise. ONLY NATION TO GET THIS WITHOUT SIGNING NPT. If you do not know how big a deal NPT is for west u know jack. Some idiots are trying to showcase this as a compromise.
Even if there are restrictions WE have the option to walk out.
Back to point. The day we think our need to test nukes is more inportant than our need for power, we can: 1. Ask for re-interpretation of deal, failing which: 2. Ask for lenient interpretation of Hyde act, failing which, 3. Ask for a Hyde act ammendment, failing which, 4. Ask US to F*** off and do the nuke tests.
Last point will mean revocation of agreement. So what, remember we started above 4 points with a premise that our need for nuke test was greater than the fuel need, right? Point is it is an option we have that we did not have a week ago. It is our decision to exercise. US is still not forcing us to buy anything. Analogy - No one rents u a house and a landlord says you can stay if u don't drink. How is this a bad deal? You can still drink, only he will throw u out. if you still want to live, don't drink.
With the signing of this agreement indian nuclear policy will be dictated by the US congress (hyde act). This document claims that all issues not covered by the agreement will be covered by the hyde act. a. What if the US congress amends the hyde act. Will these amendents apply? retroactively or therewith? b. Reprocessing rights not explicitly granted. This still needs to be negotiated. What if the hyde act ties reprocessing to military fissile material? c. Dual use technology restrictions are not lifted (which is what most people expected). d. There seems to be limits on how many nuclear reactors are to be declared military (which is really fine since the existing ones can be increased) e. New FBR's civilian. IEAE is nothing but a spy for these western democracies, whats stopping them from getting our thorium tech for free? f. Nuclear research restricted by IEAE why is this needed in this agreement since no tech is going to be provided by US ? g. What happens after a test? US walks out demands everything back. All this negotiation / consideration is nothing but crap. There are no solid legal garauntees.
This is nothing but a CTBT & FMCT agreement with some sort of cap on indian nuclear research.
I want to ask a simple question. If this pact is so bad for our country and so good for America, why Pakistan wants to do a similar pact with them? Will anybody like to reply this?

Khan Saab, Its because of 2 reasons. 1) Pakistan does not need to test its neuclearweapon cos its weapons are tested and bought from Chinese. Indians are self made and we need to test it. 2) Pakistan should not be bench marked for us. Will China accept to simillar condition? Think how we can go forward not backword and be a rogue state like Pakistan.

Preeti jee. If that was the case Why did Pakistan test it in 98 and close door on their BIGGEST ally?
I am sure RSS wallas are squirming as this marks yet another success for Dr Singh. RSS/BJP for all their talks of development has done nothing accept some padyatras and visits to Pakistan.
Dr Singh has given all major milestones to India in last 20 years.
It is stupid to think that China will deny such deal if they had the same lake of Uranium that we have. Would we have refused this deal if we were as developed as China - maybe. But the point is we are not.
Strategic deals are made on ground realities and not on stupid ideologies. The point is we need this boost in energy. We are all dreaming of competing with China. We don't even have power plants to fire our current manufacturing facilities. How will get more energy? You have any thoughts?
Only call center jobs are close door. I mean very much closed. Pakistan's nucleazr test on 28-30th may 1998, were not close door stuff. Everyone knew it much before. So also they knew of our plan of testing on 13-15th may same year. They commited a silly mistake. They should have tested around end of August or early September so that they could have given a diplomatic reason like because India did we had to do for our security reason. The whole testing method needs at least 4-6 months for any advanced available facility. Pakistan, for the sake of euphoria and so called domestic appeasement, just could not resist the temptation of testing them within a mere 2 weeks after India had her own. People from the intelligence agencies, i.e., Mossad and raw don't come to rediff forum to vomit what they know. Even some of the chineese technicians were there on the test cite.

A lot of people began to ask these things. That is the happiest thing.

We are not China. The question you ask is stupid, Its like asking, will US do such deal - of course not. US is not India. We have pressing need to develop and we need the energy.
It is a shame that you are willing to sacrifice country's growth to satisfy your political preferences.

sb, The statement you are making is stupid. We are not Pakistani. Where we see ourself, you and your favourite puppet PM sees yourselves as a much lower position. So what is a winning treaty for you is a loosing one for us.
There are more ex-scientists who are more vocal against the deal. They are talking for the India and not for anypolitical party.

Read the interview with Mr Narayanan, national security advisor to GOI where he mentions three scenarios leading up to doomsday in Pakistan and consequently how that will affect us. We need nukes people as deterrent ! The reason why no country in the world has the guts to attack the US is because they have the worlds largest nuclear stockpile. Go to fas.org to see the numbers - trust me it will shake the ground beneath you !

The US only has national interests at the forefront of this nuke deal with India. There are many ways to become self-reliant in terms of energy - use non-renewable sources of energy like Wind, Solar, Hydro. Solar has the potential to supply electricity to every village in India. Start up costs are high but in the long term it will not matter. What is lacking is policy and incentives to encourage use of these sources of energy at the grass root level and bureaucratic level. The voice of the people of any country is enough to put pressure on any government. If a village in India wants electricity then the politicians will have to provide them with it because if they dont then they will not be in power, the next time elections are held. The US has always played big brother since the time of world war II. They want to limit the capabilities of any developing nation like ours and they will do anything to get the most essential commodity in the world - oil like they are doing in Iraq. Right now only countries rich in oil and natural gas are able to stand against the US. Russia has the worlds largest supply of natural gas reserves, Iran is the second nation after Saudi Arabia having undiscovered reserves of oil. And the US will also start a arms race to enforce their will on countries - look at Nigeria - the US supplies arms to the nigerian militia to keep them away from attacking american oil refineries. The CIA is the biggest terrorist organization serving their own interests

Would you care to list those scientists. It does not matter what "you" think or where your "position" is. The fact is we should consider where the COUNTRY'S position is. This is a strategic deal not a slogan shouting contest. Just because you say we were "Sone kee chidia" does not give electricity to 300,000 villages (thats right, not people, but villages).
Problem with your kind is to uphold your party ideology you will even criticize a deal that is good for country. For you party is more important than country.
Anyway, i do not think you are at my "level" to discuss this. You hear only soundbites from your masters. I bet you have not read the analysis, context of either this treaty or Hyde act.

If Pakistan was so intelligent it would not have been tin the soup it has landed itself into... US first used them to fight terrorists and then chew them and threw them off...

Because pakistan is stupid. They view this on an equal-equal basis and not on a realistic basis.
