Nuclear deal
by K. K. Sinha on Jul 16, 2006 04:00 PM  Permalink

About the nuclear deal many knowledgeable people have been apprehensive. It is not only because of duel face of the US (which sent its 7th fleet to Bay of Begal in 1972) but also because it ennuls the path of independence we have followed all along. The crisis has come on account of our leaders not caring for prospecting and mining in the past. Now the power reactors are starving for fuel. But we must be wary of signing the agreement with IAEA that will open up our non power reactor facilities in perpetuity. Accountability and inspection only for the fuel supplied by outsiders. Never on our own FBTR and other reprocessing facilities. The people have to be watchful if the govt and the scientists working on extension are buckling under US pressure.

See the writing on the wall.. Mr.Saran and Manmohanji!!!!
by Satish on Jul 15, 2006 09:21 PM  Permalink

Its discriminate from begining.. I hope some right sense prevails on Indian Admin and they backout from the 'deal'(read trap laid by US) at the earliest and save India from greatest curse. Being naive and coy in International Affairs is not good. There is nothing obligation/commitment to US if they are bent on trapping us. The worst thing that happened was the AWE we hyped up by Bush's visit. Even PM broke the protocol to greet Bush. Whats all this?? Please backout rather than accept in blind faith. It will save India from innumerable troubles.

Nuclear Deal, Secretary Saran;s comments
by dr bms rao on Jul 15, 2006 06:18 PM  Permalink

Mr Saran's statement that some provisions of the US legislation 'may be unpalatable' is both an understatement and evasive. The real question is Whether the US provisions override, so far as US is concerned, any agreement US may sign with India.

Similarly his statement ""I can only state that those who are in the position to make an informed judgment on the needs of our credible minimum deterrent have concluded otherwise." The question is not someone has concluded but Who and On what basis.

Not too long after UPA accession to power Natwar Singh, then External Affairs Minister was reported in the media to have said that the development and exploding of the Bomb by Vajpayee government was a mistake.

Not merely scary, it is chilling.

striking any deal with Iran that could have pumped
life into India`s economy and they have succeded.

Nuclear deal was unpalatable - right from the beginning when US wanted to thrust it on us.
by Vishwanath on Jul 15, 2006 10:13 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Mr Saran, it is unpalatable and not 'may be'. All Indians knew it all along except may be the negotiators. Someone rightly said, that US stagemanaged the passing of vote in this senate and that, to obviously fool us. They have nothing to give us and only want everything for themselves. I wonder why we were thrust in the first place of this deal after 32 years? Did we need US before 32 years? Then why this sudden goody goody feeling for US? What are you people really trying to achieve?
I pray and hope that wiser counsel prevails and we reject the humbug deal in totality and close that chapter once for all in the larger interests of our nation. Let us not be enamoured by the glossy and unintended language being used for Inida's energy needs. We cannot sell our nation to someone and that too so cheaply and easily. Why are you saying that it is contrary to informed opinions of the scientists? Are they fools or are they paranoid or who is paranoid?
Indians have had enough of Bristish Raj. Will Indians make history repeat itself under now the US Raj?
That will be the saddest and bitterest day in the lives of our countrymen if we allow ourselves to be sold under so called Nuclear Deal.

What have we done in 32 years? Failed insats and agnis, nothing else. American cooperation is very much needed if we want to advance technologically. Scientists have tried to hoodwink indians by stating wrong facts. Pray to god that pakistan or china do not immediately attack us by calling our bluff on matters nuclear or misslie!!!

Nuclear Deal
by PREMPRASAD on Jul 15, 2006 07:19 AM  Permalink

Sir,

Shyam Sarans admission that the nuclear bill that currently being debated by the American Congree may certain unpalatable statements is worrying. Even more worrying is his belief that that even if the original agreement is modified and ratified by the congress, what would be America\'s interpretation of the the legislation? Will they honour the still agreement if we do not conform to the new clauses introduced by the Congress? How does the government plan to exit the deal if things go wrong?
