Test
by Harpreet on Jul 27, 2005 09:46 PM  Permalink

A very good test of something that is being politicised in India is to look at reactions in Pakistan- as with the Kashmir bus ( which when in power the BJP proposed and when out of power they opposed) the nuke deal with US has the Pakistani's in a tizzy and them seeking a similar deal. If it is so bad as the commie's and the BJP to come together ( as they are on the Gurgaon worker's strike- which is frightening to see for it makes the BJP seem to be desperate ), then why is the BJP's favourite enemy ( Pakistan ) demanding this terrible Nuke deal for itself ?

Alternate Energy source
by Manoj on Jul 27, 2005 07:40 PM  Permalink

The author has not considered one factor in his article. There is hydrogen as a new energy source which is being projected to be available commercially within next 10 years. Billions of dollars are being invested by USA, Germany, China and Japan for developing a hydrogen economy within 10 years. Hydrogen is being described as the energy source in the next decade. Search the net for hydrogen and all information can be obtained in this regard. The problems expected with oil supply is the main motivation for the interest in hydrogen technology. I hope the author will take note and pursue with the political leadership the need for more indian effort to gain this technology

Nuclear deal with US
by sibysibs on Jul 27, 2005 07:08 PM  Permalink

its is indeed a great news for indian scientists who have been grappling with lack of funds, co-operation from the govt. and sluggard politicians. Its a win win situation for both US and India. More so for US, which has been recently getting uncomfortable with the rise of China. The chinese have been following a strategy of gaining economic might in the few years to come. Slowly but steadily its been inching closer to Russia. And dont forget that pakistan, a blow hot blow cold ally of US, has been failing in all fronts to contain al-Qaida and other terror operatives. There is a general perception in the US conservative media that US must ronounce its ties with pakistan and opt for a more US friendly ( perceived) India. Since the US has a conservative Republican at the helms, we can expect possible fireworks in the months to come. US also considers imminebt threat from North Korea and Iran, both have been receiving favours and tactical support from China. India is US's best bet in the region, its been proved considering the fact that we are no longer push overs and are a force to reckon with.

Lets get knowhow
by Raja Krishnan on Jul 27, 2005 04:58 PM  Permalink

There is nothing wrong with the nuclear deal with US. Its another area we need more technical know-how. India needs all kinds of technical know-how to stay ahead of its nuclear neighbours, China & Pakistan. Communists cannot compete with the CAPITALISTS. Because they dont have any capital other than thier Das Capital.

India-US Neuclear deal
by Sauvik on Jul 27, 2005 02:28 PM  Permalink

This is perhaps one of the largest step both countries
took in their political history.Whatever Pakistan may
console themself with it is no secret in print in US
acceptance of India as a dependable neuclear power and
need play a rational role in world geopolitics. This is
in fact the culmination of delebration NDA govt. was
having during its tenure. We must not take any note of our one eyed left parties who see strategic relation
with China clear but find gray when it comes to USA or
for that matter anything west. They are jaundiced peop-
le.We wounder when our left will start thinking more
about Indias interest rather in their polarised polit-
icial consideration. When is India going to be more important than China for our left.

Re: Do we need the nuclear deal with US?
by Musharraf MAQBOOL on Jul 27, 2005 12:50 PM  Permalink

I'd say we should definietly build our own reactors. What I dont understand is however the buzz for inspections! The logic is simple. If my neighbour our any person in my city can have a gun to protect his family why cannot I have it? Likewise if the USA can have Nuclear (civil and military) facilities why cant we have it. Why impose sanctions on us for this? This is just sheer hypocrisy. We should just cancel any commitments with such hypcrites and go into deals with our long time friends like Russia.

Finally a sane article on the India-US cooperation...
by Sanjay A on Jul 27, 2005 02:07 AM  Permalink

Commodore Jasjit Singh has hit the bulls eye with this article, which touches upon all the strategic arguments/points related to the developing relations between India and the US. It is moot point that both the nations will benefit from the strategic engagement, however, there are a lot of historical baggage factors on both sides that need to be addressed before this truly becomes a strategic relation. The left front's nuisance factor truly needs to be dealt by the Congress and the BJP parties in the interest of the nations security - economic and military. The US needs to setlle the non-proliferation ayatollahs and cold war era minds at their end. India and its government will also need to behave like a global power and not like the flip-flop behavior we have shown in the past on a lot of strategic issues. I think Jasjit Singh has done a favor to the Indian readers by writing this article and this article should get extra coverage on Rediff for its positiveness.

This is one good deal we got from Congress.
by Vijai on Jul 26, 2005 11:53 PM  Permalink

Yes, I believe we need. This is one good deal we got from Congress. BJP, as said by author, is cognizant of this & is only playing politics. It's good to know that India is now actively & rightly acting towards economical development. Which is today a new kind of warfare, a new weapon for countries. We have to sustain, if not overcome, China. Fact, aren't we facing power/electricity crisis? To cities like Hyd. & Bangl. power is one major threat. And, nuclear plants deals with it. As said by author, if nuclear energy is environtl. friendly, then it must be brought to use. Fact, US is seeking friendship with us on business purpose, & so should we. Parties like CPI and BJP(though I believe in BJP than Congress) better stop making fuss on this.
I will support Congress on this.
