Obscure Issues on Education in India
by Dr. Suryadevara Ph.D on Dec 22, 2005 12:27 PM  Permalink

Subhash is talking Social sciences, Engineering & Technology and Sciences at a time, I am afraid that a single conclusion can't satisfy all. Moreover, some of the geniuses can't be identified under any Indian university. In fact people like S Ramanujam are blessed with talent by birth. Mahatma Gandhi was known after studying in London. There are several successful people in western countries those had their undergraduate studies in India from not that much reputed institutes. Of course IIT's undergraduate programs are well known since their entry is through some tough screening process. Undergraduate and masters students use the existing framework and record to seek career else where. Most of the research publications in engineering from India are due to the input from Research Scholars and I am sure that in future they play much bigger role in building a vibrant research culture. They are the most significant people for keeping the current research record and their earnings should match the Industry. Coming to the worlds ranking we simply can't compare apples with oranges. We have to see the research output per unit funding then I am sure that IITs would stand in top 20 around the world.

Ratings are biased
by Ruchir Khare on Dec 22, 2005 12:26 PM  Permalink

I agree that India is lacking on education front and much needs to be done. The first aim should be to give preferrence to basic science. Engineering is more of applied science, which rests on basic science.
I just went through the reading in details. Actually when you see the individual scores, IISc and IIT KGP scores are zero on alumni, which is next to impossible. The role of IIT has been acknowledged by likes of Bill Gates. Please consider this aspect too. Moreover as we have seen ranking is always controversial.

no to private universities in India,
by Kapil on Dec 22, 2005 11:06 AM  Permalink

I am presently studying in a top ranked US university and I find the Garaduate courses here to be the level of under-grad in India. Thats the reason Indian Students rule the roost in US universities.

Having done dual masters, one in India and one in US; i would say Indian universities should not ape the US system.

The only good factor about US system is that the pass grade is 80%. SO even average students dont graduate. Otherwise the coursecontent is not to the standard of Indian Universities.

University standards cannot be determined by awards or ranks. please donnot commercialise education in India.

& for your information, more & more US students are coming to central universities in India. They are not going to china.

Private universities means high fees, and these universities will pressurise government to raise fees of the pubic universities or privitise them. that means education will not be affordable even to middle class, forget the poor.

I Appreciate your views
by Jagdish Pathak on Dec 22, 2005 09:00 AM  Permalink

The views expressed in this article have great merits and the education providers and the learners will have to see what quality of education is given to the users. Policy makers in India may have to rethink whether it is in the interest to keep majority of good institutes under their control or let these be privatized fo good. States can keep tag on some Schools in the province but let one best school to become genuine best!

Higher Studies
by saurabh agrawal on Dec 22, 2005 03:50 AM  Permalink

This is true IITs are good at undergraduate level. one of the reason is that ignorance of graduate students by IIT faculty itself. most of the IIT undergrades dont want to study in IIT itself for higher study, most of the students at garduate level come from other colleges and IIT professors presume that their standard is low, so treat differently and teaches comparativly of low standard in comparison to undergrades. if IIT try to maintain same standard at graduate level as that of undergraduate level, it will certainly help to boost higher studies in IIT>
