Goldilocks Sivaswamy

"Today's rulers <insert whine here>"
I always hear these repeated laments about "today's rulers" -- if you think you can do better, then run for office yourself, SS. I'm really bored to death of this over-worn plaintiveness on "rulers". The only reason to use such a word is because one wants detach oneself from responsibility of public office, implicitly wallowing in complacency. The Lord Helps Those Who Help Themselves. When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going. They don't sit there whining endlessly about "today's rulers". Your fickle Goldilocks mentality will never be satisfied.

well, while this seems to be good, I cannot realise the importance of it as I have never lived in Mumbai. But the first step still seems to be the dissociation of Mumbai from Maharashtra.
Mumbai is not at all a marathi heartland and the marathi-mangers are simply trouble-creaters over there. Mumbai has largely been built by non-Mumbaikars. Tamilians and others from the 'South' and Gujaratis / Sindhis / Parsis in particular.
There is no sense in claiming Marathiness in Mumbai.
If Mumbai becomes a separate entity like delhi, it is going to really benefit the place since issues, not identities will decide the vote and the ministers can ceoncentrate on the city that values the quality of life.

Mumbai - suburbs...
by Yashpal Sharma on Aug 05, 2005 09:36 AM  Permalink

Yeah...I agree with the view regarding bifurcation of Mumbai for better governance. But more important than that is the change in the mindset of our rulers/politicians. With the present "we care a damn attitude" towards the common man ; there is no guarantee that things will be better even if the bifurcation does take place. The malaise runs much deeper.

I feel that it is in these times that the TRUE role of the masses need to emerge. I remember the days when the teleserial 'Ramayana' was being aired. The electricity played traunt once and lo behold there was a dharna near their office and they had to restore the power asap. If we can get united for a mere Teleserial....then CAN WE NOT GET TOGETHER TO SAVE OUR VERY OWN LIVES ? That is the question that we need to ask ourselves. Even GOD only helps those who help themselves.

Mumbai suburbs need to break off
by s subramanyan on Aug 04, 2005 06:47 PM  Permalink

The proposal to break BMMC into two is to be demanded urgently for for too long North Mumbai has been neglected. But the more important question is how to improve vastly the adminsitrative efficacy and the quality and commitment of the councillors.

Stop all the projects like Nava Sheva-Sewree and Worli-Bandra sealane and concentrate on northern suburbs.

Imrpove the quality fo rail travel taking short and medium term measures and not dream of metros and skyways and bullet trains to materialise some twenty years away and envision A/C suburban trains!

Discard the McKenzie plan and stop the sale of mill lands.

More money to be spent on health, education and public transport.

Media and NGOs have a vital role to play if we should not experience another 26 July.
