An incompetent boss can be a nightmare !
by SS Kumar on Jan 01, 2008 04:39 PM  Permalink

It is said one can not choose one's parents nor one's boss. I had the privilege of working for the world's leading no. 2 computer giant after IBM. On day one of my joining, the President of this US MNC (known to me for a decade earlier) called me in and said "Every time I see your boss in action, I get butterflies in my stomach.
Can you quickly help me locate a replacement for him ?"
I asked him if he felt so bad,why did he recruit him in the first place ? "Oh, the HR man was from the same well known Pune HQ'd mainframe company and he seemingly brought in all his family friends !"
Some how, this news leaked and my relationship with my senior was never friendly.
In most US MNCs, the boss is evaluated by the subordinates once a year and a uniform negative rating of the boss sends the right message to the senior bosses and acts a counter balance, to a cranky boss. Bottom line, one's boss must always be one or two steps smarter than a subordinate else it can be pretty demoralizing.

Your boss need some one from IIT intelligence. Just being from IIT does not make any difference. Probably he might be good in politics.

Boss
by arungopal agarwal on Jan 01, 2008 04:14 PM  Permalink

I will say Boss is normally right. If he is wrong, one is to wait appropriate time and place to tell him, that he is wrong. We have noticed that in Govt. this norm is not maintained. Recently we have seen annoyance of Venugopal and Ms. Kiran Bedi with the Govt. If this would have been private sector, there was no way out except to quit. Such situations are not healthy for any management.

Bossism exists
by jantar on Jan 01, 2008 04:11 PM  Permalink

Bossism exists just that...it takes newer forms...many decisions are with bosses and the stuff like salary hikes, promotions or any rewards..sanction of leave..peace f mind at office...for all these things there is no express powers that bosses need..very fact that they are deciding authprity and its very essential to be in good books of the bosses so as to have a peaceful mind at office..employees need to do as bosses say...otherwise in one way or there things will be screwed...public sector private sector it does not really matter...ofcourse they are good bosses who really value employee relations and nevertheless behave even when there are rules

Nice article

Nice article.

But, it is not true to all sectors. Bossism still rules in some of the sectors.

I work for an agrochemical company in Bangalore.

In our company, HR Dept. is just a namesake and are abused.

Whenever they have to answer some tough calls from Employees, they try to hide behind non-existent company policies!!!

Our company is controlled by an accounts person. He thinks he is master of all trades and is very much fond of boot lickers.

Without knowing the ABC of sales and marketing, he is controlling our entire Indian operation. What is more funny is, he even try to take technical decisions (atleast a master's degree is agriculture is required to handle technical issues)!!!. Quite funny naah??!!!!

And our Technical Manager is a boot licker!. I was wonder struck to know that he made a whole lot of false claims about his capabilities to get his job. However, he survives comfortably and unquestioned. You know why? Because our accountant CEO is a layman with respect to technicalities.

Our accountant CEO enjoys great responsibilities, just because, the company owner trust him!. For the company owner, Loyalty is only qualification. Rest of the things - who cares??! Sad part is that actually he is not loyal!

LONG LIVE INDIA AND IT'S CORPORATE CULTURE.

MANAGERS OVERSMART
by Salman Khan on Jan 01, 2008 02:37 PM  Permalink

Not everytime, but most of the time Manager's think they are very smart, because of which they become oversmart. Until a Manager does not co-operate with subordinates its very difficult for him be successfull, and it becomes difficult to continue. Same time subordinates every time are not wrong. I think most of the subordinates quit their job JUST BECAUSE OF HARSH MANNER OF MANAGER'S. I hope manager's understand that they are just incomplete if they r not cooperative or understanding with subordinates.

Boss is always right !
by jibak majumdar on Jan 01, 2008 02:29 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The unpleasant culture i.e.'Boss is always right' is inherited from Feudalistic business culture in India which is still prevailing. This bad culture affecting the interest of employess is originated from the owner of company of his personal ego/pride of wealthiness which percolates down to M.D./Diretor/HOD ect .This is like earlier Zamindar(the owner of the company) and Nayab(M.D/Diretor/HOD)who used to show bad treatment to the Prajas and the same culture is continuing in corporate world.Unless this culture is enrooted from the top this bad bossism will prevail.

Hmm..
by Kaushik Das on Jan 01, 2008 02:24 PM  Permalink

I doubt it. Bosses are still very much right. They can be proved wrong only if the argument is with a senior or very 'useful' resource.
.
Otherwise, the bosses are believed more than the employees, especially new ones, who would not fight an established boss anyway.
.
Companies know this and still support the bosses because they 'bring in business'.
