It is said one can not choose one's parents nor one's boss. I had the privilege of working for the world's leading no. 2 computer giant after IBM. On day one of my joining, the President of this US MNC (known to me for a decade earlier) called me in and said "Every time I see your boss in action, I get butterflies in my stomach. Can you quickly help me locate a replacement for him ?" I asked him if he felt so bad,why did he recruit him in the first place ? "Oh, the HR man was from the same well known Pune HQ'd mainframe company and he seemingly brought in all his family friends !" Some how, this news leaked and my relationship with my senior was never friendly. In most US MNCs, the boss is evaluated by the subordinates once a year and a uniform negative rating of the boss sends the right message to the senior bosses and acts a counter balance, to a cranky boss. Bottom line, one's boss must always be one or two steps smarter than a subordinate else it can be pretty demoralizing.
