Last week's Mumbai rains
by Anand on Aug 04, 2005 07:50 AM  Permalink

I do not agree with the veiw that the image of Mumbai has been battered by last weeks rain.
It is a fact that it left Mumbaikars gasping for more better civic amneties. It cannot be debated that the drainage system needs to be improved to serve the ever increasing population of the country, but that is an ongoing issue.
Talking about last weeks rains, it was a natural calamity and even the most progressed cities of the world would have found it difficult to cope with such a furry of the natural elements. I was watching the news of the rains on Sky news, UK. They had an expert geographer on the panel. He also accepted that when you get rainfall in one day much more than the average for one month, the place stands little chance to fight back.
On the other hand we have to appreciate the humanitarian spirit of Mumbaikars. So many stories of unnammed people going out of their way to help the needy are coming to light that one feels proud to have such a city in our country.

by vis on Aug 04, 2005 05:26 AM  Permalink

again its the same old story, just complain, that we cut a sorry figure in front of the rst of the world.why the hell do we need to care of others just be concerned about our country for once, its always what do to the other countries think about us and not what do our own countrymen think about the our own government.instead going about writing what we can do to improve the conditions of our people and what reconstruction plans are being taken by the municipal authorities we just waste pages and pages or spaces going on writing this kind of crap. For once think as an INDIAN,write as to what a sorry figure we cut in front of our own countrymen and not in front of the world.

complacency and callous apathy
by A.H. Venkatachalam on Aug 04, 2005 03:30 AM  Permalink

Singapore, Japan or London would not have allowed the situation to deteriorate to the extent to which it has been done in Mumbai. Rains should not have been allowed to wash away thousands of human beings. When Tsunami struck, TN Government and its administrators showed dynamism and alertness which attracted the praise of former President of USA Bill Clinton. The complacency, apathy and indifference in such circumstances by the authorities in Mumbai cannot be justifierd.

mumbai rains
by ash on Aug 04, 2005 02:18 AM  Permalink

I dont see why a natural calamity should pu India in a sorry state. Admittedly, Mumbai is in bad state, but doesn't natural calamities take anywahere in the world causing devastation. And its about time for some people to think India as still under developed. India has a growing economy, it is a developing nation with its younger generation being aware and positive. And PM Mr.Manmohan Singh, wasn't the least bit wrong in mentioning India's growing economy.
Floods happen even in US, thats natural calamity. And floods happening in India is a sorry state of India's development! What is this, play of words or a personality complex for some people as it seems!

Mumbai rains batter India image.
by Dr.Rajendra Nayak on Aug 03, 2005 11:44 PM  Permalink

I donot understand why we should have an inferiority complex? Let the world think anything about us why should we bother. Every businessman of the world is falling on to his knees to sell to 1 billion population.
Every country has faced disasters. We didnot call for the rain. The developmental activities were wrong is talking afterwards. Some measures could have been taken by 3 p.m. on 26th of July. The people including many so called intellectuals donot observe Nature channels which describe nature's fury which are often worse than our Mumbai.
So anybody telling us that we cannot our people is utter nonsense wherein tornadoes, hurricanes, cyclones, snow fall, rain, earthquakes kill large number of people all over the world. We should up and tell the world that there are 150 lakhs people living in a small area and 930 mm of rainfall in 24 hours can cause devastation anywhere on earth. This might have happened when man didnot live in a crowded manner at this place. They must have lived in the hills. So this is one of the records for the future like many western countries with very thin population face calamities but here the number is gigantic where some donot listen to dangers.

Can't blame the govt for not planning
by Sudeep on Aug 03, 2005 11:15 PM  Permalink

In the NYC, the annual rainfall is aroung 26 cms and we had a rains that marked almost a meter in a day.
No developed country could have coped with this torrential rains.Even developed country would have looked help less for this amount of rains.
So blaming the govt for not having good drainage systems in place. It happened first time in recorded history. Hope this is the last time.
