Last week's Mumbai rains
by Anand on Aug 04, 2005 07:50 AM

I do not agree with the veiw that the image of Mumbai has been battered by last weeks rain.
It is a fact that it left Mumbaikars gasping for more better civic amneties. It cannot be debated that the drainage system needs to be improved to serve the ever increasing population of the country, but that is an ongoing issue.
Talking about last weeks rains, it was a natural calamity and even the most progressed cities of the world would have found it difficult to cope with such a furry of the natural elements. I was watching the news of the rains on Sky news, UK. They had an expert geographer on the panel. He also accepted that when you get rainfall in one day much more than the average for one month, the place stands little chance to fight back.
On the other hand we have to appreciate the humanitarian spirit of Mumbaikars. So many stories of unnammed people going out of their way to help the needy are coming to light that one feels proud to have such a city in our country.
