We still want to dependent on outsiders..
by Shivam on May 01, 2005 07:35 PM  Permalink

I am grately confused by the article that has been published in Business Standard. On one hand he puts forward a exciting idea of good designs and goodlooking buildings but on the other hand he reverts back to the Bengali attitude of upholding foreign people's skill as being better than our countrymen. I do not understand this and I totally disagree with him on the idea of having our buildings designed by correas and australians etc. Why cant we put up world class educational institutions which would impart knowledge in indian architecture and as well as modern architecture to our citizens and in the hope of one day them leading the world in designing. But whatever the ugly state of the country is today whether it may be in architecture, music, culture and not forget politics is entirely due to our old generation who have not made sure that our future generations have a happy and properous future offcourse with few exceptions but there only few of them. Our great country with 1bn people has only 5-6 IITs and 5-6 IIMs is that all in 50 years of our independence. And what are so proud of it its not even ranked highly in the world. What we need is better education and institutions.

The PWD mindset
by Nagendra Pratap Singh on May 01, 2005 12:02 AM  Permalink

We need this PWD mindset for some more time I feel ( I may be wrong though). Any modern/ultra modern development is ultra expensive. India lacks infrastructure and a lot of it has to be built with the limited means.
I don't approve the works of lots of architects, both in India and overseas. I have seen them waste lots of space in prime locations. Extra expense on buildings should be minimised. The cities of Sydney and Montreal are still suffering from the extra taxes they have to pay for maintaining the unused facilities they made at the time of olympics.
As for Indian architects, MOST (not all) of them join this because they cannot get admission in other engineering trades.

think deeper Mr. Roy
by Aditya Andley on Apr 30, 2005 10:12 AM  Permalink

Making claims that India is surely is big and rich enough to afford these big masterpieces like that in Singapore, HongKong and Malaysia is completely unfounded and misplaced.
The economies of these countries are better than us by a mile. India needs architecture that is ecologically sensitive and one that propagates novel aesthetic values. Such architecture can only emerge out of our tradition but not through (I agree) replication of it. That is why Chrles Correa is among India's best architects.
the Foster's, Pei's and Hadid's cannot provide us with that. We need architecture like the the Godrej building in Hyderabad that has got the world's green building award (the building is designed by Karan Grover).
The article also should not be making such unwarranted (thoughtless) claims that there are any good architect's like Correa and Doshi.
And the countries that have employed the strategy of getting foriegn architects are today reeling under their harmful effects of energy consumption. China, considering what it is on the way to colapse anyway. it is killing its tradition and copying west blindly.

architecture styles
by suri on Apr 29, 2005 06:50 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is a strange position. Why should only modern be called good looking? There are plenty of people around who prefer the Taj Mahal or the Tanjavur Temple to Singapore's mindless glass and concrete structures.

We need good buildings but with caution
by avidnewsreader on Apr 29, 2005 02:50 PM  Permalink

The author makes a point when he says that we have to come out of the PWD/Traditional architecture mindset. To give Indian metropolies a new look ,we indeed need structures that give an international look. But having the same tall steel/glass/cement structures everywhere in the world breeds montony and is also boring.Architects must be asked to create new structures which are both visually pleasing and environmentally sustainable.Indian city skyline should be distinct from the rest of the developed world.
