Chase the businesses
by kshitij tumbde on Jan 03, 2008 06:06 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

How to deal with such businesses?

1. Are there any non profit orgs in Goa that can file court cases on such businesses for discrimination and humiliation? Chase these places to get their operating licenses cancelled.

2. Make their owners do rounds of courts with explaination.

3. Publish their names on internet blogs with their acts and first hand experiences.

4. Hit them where it hurts the most. ( I dont mean physically). Dont give them business, give them bad reputation. Dont introduce your white friends to these places. Make them lose some money

Eventually their behaviour will improve.

Look at our so called role models in India? Bloody Salman Khan and rest of Bollywood actors are so boorish and ill-mannered that they go about their rude behaviors in public. Indian public encourage this rowdy elements by watching their movies.

On a recent visit to India I travelled by local bus so that my kids get to experience real India. Men were occupying women seat while my wife had to stand in the bus with our 1 year old in her hand. When I got into argument with the man, no one wanted to get involved and everyone looked as if I am the bad one. Slavish mentality in these people likes to see me act snobish and American.

Civic sense prevail in west because people take a clear collective stand against someone breaking law or doing nasty things. In India, so called educated act as if they are in West, while conveniently ignoring the mess around them and not taking collective stand against this mess.

Interestingly I see that traditional Indians with culture have the best civic sense. Its the in between rotten elements that have lost all senses, neither culture nor modern thinking.

well i completely agree with the chennai pubs putting restrictions on single "indian" males .. lest all that they wud do is get drunk, ogle at women sitting at other tables .. and might go even worse .. the recent clothes tearing episode in mumbai is testimony to what extent indian males can go .. foreigners appear outlandish but atleast they keep to themselves .. women starved single indian males deserve the treatment they get at these pubs ..

Indian tolerance
by yogi sippy on Jan 03, 2008 12:29 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I have traveled abroad many times in life but have never dared to urinate in a public place.

Check out all the Whites in Goa.They pee wherever they wish to do so. Will they dare to do the same in their own country? they will probably be fined or even jailed.

That is Indian tolerance for you.

But where are the public toilets?? Its hard to find a good public restroom even in the metros. I aint saying white men do not urinate in public places, but i have seen very, very few doing that, that too because a toilet was out of sight. Now i am not turning pro - white either. In their country, they are USED to good public facilities, but here, the money goes to the luxuries and fat bank accounts of the politicians, rather than adding to the basic infrastructure of our country.

sad, but true. The way Indians are like this is because of us. There is no place left for us to point the index finger, other than to the mirror.

Black & white

Well written article.

But the reasons for this discrimination points to ourselves. Indians, generally do not have love for their country - Or they do not care. The public behaviour of the majority of Indians is the reason why Indians get abused or discriminated - Even in our country. I have seen Indians fighting for a place near the conveyor belt @ airport, Littering food even in I AC compartments, Spitting everywhere they could. I can afford to generalise, because of a good majority is not doing this, India, would be a better place to live in. Everyone who have visited europe or even Thailand might have felt the increasing tendency to ignore Indian tourists.

Saying all this, I refuse to blame others - The society manifests the character of the majority. We have to live on with it, and the majority have to change. Tomorrows majority will learn from todays elders - sad - It is todays elders who are the worst.

But I still prefer to be in India - If everyone loves the country, and have a minimum consideration to the public property and etiquettes, all these can change - But..

Everyone wants to have a job abroad at the next possible moment. And they are willing to take the abuse the "whites" shower upon them - I dont want to be one of them. I prefer the littered roads of India than any foreign land.

Racism in India
by Venkat Chandra on Jan 02, 2008 10:29 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

In the sixties there was this Breach Candy club on Warden Road in Bombay where only whites were allowed regardless of their nationalities. This was located close to the American Consulate and was popular even among East Europeans. Even Mihir Sen, the legendary channel swimmer was turned away when he came for a swim at the club. The magazine Blitz wrote an article on this at that time. Does anyone know the situation now. I have not lived in Bombay for a very long time, so I don't know.

we Indians
by bipin on Jan 02, 2008 10:09 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

i had a similar experience. My clients from Dublin were here in Chennai and we were at one of the popular dance floors. To my surprise i was disallowed by the staff from joining the Irish. On demanding the reason, the guy said he was instructed that no 'Indian' should be allowed to join the whites.
On the other hand, the treatment I recieve in lands of whites is on par with what the whites recieve. It is in our own land we face this problem.
It is not surprising how much respect a white foreigner would have for we Indians when he/she finds the respect our ppl have for fellow Indians.
The root problem is much beyond the scope of this discussion forum in Rediff. It is evident in every facet of the daily lives of we Indians.

Bipin,
You are correct. The problem is beyond the scope of discussion on rediff. However, having lived in West for 20 years, I do realize, in a big picture, lack of self confidence and self respect has led Indians to hate themselves and someone like them. How did this happen? May be 60 years of socialistic era from Nehru family that denied Indians everything.

I had been in an jet airways domestic flight. I found very few indian air hostesses who were really polite and willing to serve. I happend to request a business class air hostess for water by mistake but she completely ignored the request as I was travelling in economy class.

I had also been on austrian airways flight but the attitude of air hostesses (white) was much more professional and polite. Even the bussiness class air hostesses I found were polite and professional enough to serve economy class passengers when requested to do so.

Yes, if you mean the white air hostesses on Air Austria, not the desi kind. The desi kind are problematic on most airlines. It is worse on British Airways - a religion factor.

Even worse are low servants on airlines
by You yourself on Jan 02, 2008 08:54 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Air Hostesses of Indian origin treat Indians like dirt. Know why? The low women get a salary of may be 60000 per month, and they think they are superior to all Indians, including Ambanis and LN Mittal. Because it takes brains to understand that their salary does not make them great nor is their salary half of what my barber makes.
