RE:Mam..... which is the right time to do yoga

Sure, will do a piece on it --though, as it stands now, these fives poses also help indirectly, but def. as I have explained in the intro. about the time: mornings is the best. A good yogi, usually does it between 4 to 6 am. But that is for disciplined practitioners. Otherswise mornings before eating is best. If all this is constraining on you, then you can do it as per convenience, keeping a gap of 2 to 4 hours after a heavy meal before you do yoga. And not to do yoga closer to sleep time, since that will affect your ability to fall asleep. So, try initially only to be disciplined enough not to miss a day's practice when you start yoga:)
Your article on Yoga is quite interesting. I have been practising Yoga since last one year with the help of Baba Ramdev's disciple. Lot of changes have happened to me. I had sinus problem and it is gone. I had anger and tension-90% gone. My patience have increased. I would like to add your tips to my present practice. Great! Keep it up!!

Thanks for sharing Raviji. This sharing of actual experience/s is more effective in convincing people than when instructors like I write about it. As you have noted, yoga's effect is not only on the body but also on the mind because it fully understands this link.

Many many thanks for your reply Madam. Your advise is like a battery charging. I am fully confident that addition of your tips to my present practice will remove my shyness, which is my main weakness also. Moreover, I forgot to mention that my stomach is free from pot belly. But I have one problem, which happend to me since 11 years back. I am having problem of Achlasia Gardia. I am sure that you are fully aware of this desease, which is prevalent among few people. I had done ballooning dilatation thrice but problem re-appeared again. Doctor had advised continous consumption of capsule called Nicardia-5mg twenty minutes prior to breakfast, lunch & dinner. I am managing with that but it had little effect on my problem. Can you please advise how to remove such problem? I am sure that Yoga will help me.

Raviji -- sorry, this is the first time I have heard of this rare disorder achalasia cardia -- i tried to find out about it and learnt that it is non-responsive peristalsis and has a link with vagus nerve degeneration... and can be triggered by emotional stress and cold fluids intake and can cause extreme discomfort, with night-time coughing fits and chest pain. Since I don't know the physiological aspects of this problem apart from what I just learnt it will not be right for me to suggest a yogic programme. But since you say you are also very shy, I am guessing here that vagus nerve degeneration is linked to it (vagus nerve is a large wandering nerve, it is sensitive to emotional cues and affects a large tract within our body based on its high reactivity) and will suggest a yogic programme that will strengthen you emotionally. You also indicated that there are anger management issues. In either case yoga practice will indirectly, but defintely, help. So eventually the physical symptoms of the emotional problems can be dealt with. Please remember that this must complement your conventional, allopathic treatment and not substitute it. So if you already doing yoga, as you have shared with us, focus more on the balancing poses -- apart from the above five, there are several, easier ones that you can learn. If you are attending a class, request your teacher also to prepare a programme/sequence with the focus on balancing poses. Some of the poses I have suggested here are tough an

and may be difficult to hold for longer duration. You may try simpler balancing poses, like navratansana(you will find how to do this in my blog, in the Health Check section. http://jaisivananda.blogspot.com), ekpada pranamasana, ordinary pranamasana (but with eyes shut). Learn to hold these poses longer, particularly the simple ones. This will power you emotionally and physically. Also, include meditations like antar mouna (which is more suitable for shy people -- the tapes are available at the Bihar School of Yoga, Munger, the contact details of which are in my blog site). Short yoga nidra relaxation is a must after every yoga session (these tapes are also available at the ashram I mentioned, or you can check out how to do this on this site www.SwamiJ.com. Time magazine did a full cover story a few years ago quoting tonnes of medical researches from around the world on how regular meditation had a positive healing impact on several difficult ailments. I hope your problem will be sorted out soon. Happy sadhana!
First of all thanks a lot for yr kind gesture towards sertving people be more relax . May ask you different aasans to reduce my tummy & let me know I hv been doing Kapalbhati for last 1 yr for 5-10 min but haven't had too much of results coming out.

kapalabhati actually loosens up the stomach muscles unless you practice it with breath retention and uddiyana bandha. But both these are advanced practices and contraindicated for high blood pressure/heart problems etc. If you don't have any major health problems, you can slowly start introducing these advanced pratices. Otherwise, stick to asana like navkasana and utthanpadasana (double leg drop, slowly increasing stamina and duration in each.
Your earlier articles on asanas were a great help as are the asanas mentioned here. What helps us is that since we are not "dedicated" yoga learners but have the chronical problems mentioned, we find it extremely useful to keep adding the asanas mentioned in the article in our "arsenal".
Are there any asanas for: 1) Upper back. I have been having such chronic pain for many years now, at two points on my upper back, bang on the spine. I have a feeling that a nerve might have been crushed under two bones, but I am not sure.
2) Any asanas for reducing fat on the thighs and buttocks (I have "recorded" the Nagarajasana for the thigh)

thanks vinayji for your encouraging words. now, about your queries: 1) It would not be appropriate for either I or you to diagnose your spinal problem with pure guesswork. You need a spine specialist for this, with some routine tests. And then, I suggest you undergo physio-therapy before launching into any hard-core exercise regimen, including asana practice if the diagnosis establishes what you fear now. Fortunately, most physio-therapeutic practices are entirely yoga-based. And upper back problems, unlike lower back, respond extremely well and very fast to therapy and that part of the spine repairs fast. Here, I would also suggest you check for life-style contributors -- posture, stress and workstyle (seated/or being in one position for longer) and finally, even not having enough repairing nutrients in our food, like Vitamin C (citrus fruits, dark green veggies, red/yellow food stuff). I will do a piece on upper back soon. It has reached epidemic proportions these days. 2) your second query, for reducing fat on thighs and hips. The most immediate yogic fat-busters are locust (in the joint pain yoga set I did), navkasana (in digestion set), squats and leg lifts (from office yoga set), Camel and double angle pose ( from breathe easy yoga). But please remember that if you are asking this second query for yourself, then heal your upper spine before venturing into these practices. Of the list I have given, the office yoga poses will be the safest...

What to do when people ask such questions despite the writer giving scientific and medical explanations as to why yoga works? Please re-read through the article intro:)And also, try the asanas here first, then you will know exactly why yoga and not other exercises ...
