Yoga after Disc propalse and surgery
by KALYAN MITRA on Jul 24, 2007 11:11 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Hi Shameem,
I am 38 years of age, male, software professional. I had disc prolapse last year in L4-L5 and L5-S1, and had a surgery on L4-L5.

I would like to go for Yoga, keeping in mind that I had already surgery in one level and have a small prolapse in another level.

Is it possbile? Can I meet your personally and take some classes?

Regards

Kalyan Mitra

Kalyanji I am based in Kandivli, Mumbai. I suggest you check out a yoga teacher closer to your home, since that would be practical and help you in sustaining your fitness regimen longterm. Your question, would yoga help? Yes, yoga will help in strengthening the surrounding muscles, and the legs, tightening the abdomen so the load is taken off the spine. And your yoga chart should be designed with this mind. Remember doing yoga is not just about poses: it's pranayamas are also very powerful healing practices, and in your case, you can start with some simple ones, like belly-breathing, nadi shodhana, bhramari. In any follow-up therapy, as in your case, it is crucial to strengthen the surrounding/supportive weight-bearers... So, yoga would be a good bet, also because on a more subtle level it helps with nutrient absorption (needed for fast repair of any damage), and pranayama (helps with de-stress, since a relaxed mind is also crucial for healing). I suggest however that you choose a yoga therapist. And also request for one-to-one sessions. Joining a general or a group session (even in therapy) would not guarantee individual attention which your case warrants. My blog http://jaisivananda.blogspot.com has addresses from Mumbai, and some from India -- am trying to compile a directory of sorts..you can check back with me about any further clarification, once your start your sadhana, either here, or at my email sama_yama@yahoo.co.in. If contacting an institute you can also ask

them for a list of their teachers who do home visits. Another good bet would be to refer back to your spine expert involved with your surgery, and ask him to recommend a good physiotherapist for your rehab prog. Since most physiotherapy is yoga-based, you will be on very safe turf here. Once this is in place, you can think about your pranayama class...

I was intending to do a full article on this. But since there seems to be several messages asking for this, am giving you a list which you may check out in the meanwhile: these poses you will find on the net also: skandha chakra (shoulder rolls), neck circles (greeva sacnhalana) but neck movements must be very graded; shashankasana (hare pose) you will find in our earlier yoga series, paschimottanasana (forward bend) are useful because they help provide spinal traction. Arm stretches (also referred to as the executive stretch) are also helpful. Yogic equivalent would be tadasana (palmtree pose).

Yes Revaji yoga does help immensely with all spinal disorders and helps not only to contain the damage but also provides natural traction etc, which prevents future episodes. But I suggest you identify the actual source of your back ache since infection in kidneys and stones are also said to trigger upper back (inability to bend) problem and middle back(cannot lift heavy things). I suggest you test for this: because in this case, abdominal twists, as in some of the poses, will exert undue pressure on the kidneys..

Nilimaji, have u checked for vertigo, hypoglycemia, low blood pressure? Any inner ear infection? In low bp, your doctor would be the right guide, with suitable prescription. You may also need to consult a dietician to seriously rework your food habits: blood sugar imbalances are also known to cause such symptoms. As complement, you may definitely start using yoga to help contain this: For my article on this subject you may visit my blog http://jaisivananda.blogspot.com. I am giving you the link of the article also:http://jaisivananda.blogspot.com/2006/12/vertigo-yoga-says-you-dont-have-to-fall.html..

Nilimaji, in the list of possible triggers I forgot to mention hormonal imbalances , including thyroid problems..Again, a test should easily establish this... in which case, yoga gives super relief.

during pregnancy

Can these yoga exercises be done when on is pregnant and in the first trimester??

Nikitaji, during pregnancy each trimester has different sets of asanas. Definitely not these poses! Shoulder rolls, neck circles are ok, as also simple joint-energy releasing poses. However, it would not be advisable to try anything new, reading it over the net while pregnant! Instead joining a prenatal yoga class would be a sensible option because the teacher can guage and design your sadhana based on your previous level of activity. That is crucial also. If you are from Mumbai, I think there are some prenatal classes conducted in Bandra. Hope this answers your query:)

Nikitaji, I advise this book Nawa Yogini Tantra by Swami Muktananda for the Bihar school of yoga (Rs 100) available with Landmark bookstores. You will find Landmark on the net, and locate addresses close to your home, for delivery. It is a book on yoga for women and has a full chapter on pregnancy. It is an excellent section dealing with specific needs of a woman during each trimester. I am recommending it for the relaxation techniques it suggests, and breathing practices. In olden times, in Maharastra, it is said midwives used to train women in yoga so the babies born were sweet-tempered, Buddha-babies! So, this book will help you with such insight to get the right frame and advise you on the nature of activity recommended for each trimester. Also, there are meditation tapes done by some companies which you may find interesting: Garba sanskar by times music for instance.

Rohitji, you need to click exactly on the spot where it says Next. The top line is the headline of articles to which links are provided...

Shameemji

I too know where to click, cliked on 'Next' word itself. Looks like you didnt understand what i was trying to say.

Do you knwo what a 'page title' mean. Its not the article title i am talking about. When you open a web page, the title of the page opened is displayed on the title bar of the browser. That text is called the page title.
So when u open ur article (http://specials.rediff.com/getahead/2007/jul/20slide1.htm) the page title as well as the acticle title is '5 yoga poses to strengthen your lower back'. but when u click on next and the page that opens (http://specials.rediff.com/getahead/2007/jul/20slide2.htm) the heading of the slide is 'Uttanpadasana (Raised leg pose)', but if you check the page title (i.e the title bar of the browser) you will see that it has now changed to '6 yoga steps to perfect digestion'.

Expect this deatiled description has cleard all your doubts now.

Now if you could please answer the query rasied in my earlier comment... thanx in advance

Rohitji, I was just trying to help you out:) I am not a technical staff, just a yoga instructor writing an article...and trying my best answering queries related to yoga... So, I will forward your message to the person/staffer concerned, and hopefully he won't ruffle your feathers the way I somehow seem to have.. happy sadhana!

Hello Shameemji,

Sorry, if you felt that the tone of my previous message was rough. I sincerly appologise for it. All my intentions are to get the article corrected so that other people reading it doesnt get confused the way i did. As all of a sudden it seems that you have clicked the wrong link and have moved from the acticle on lower back to an article on digestion.

Anyways, can you please confirm whether the below 5 asanas as mentioned in the artcile, are the 5 meant for the lower back problem?
- Uttanpadasana (Raised leg pose)
- Supta hasta padangushtasana (Lying hand to toe pose)
- Supta udarakarshanasana (Lying abdominal twist)
- Kandharasana (Shoulder pose, also called pelvic tilts)
- Dradhasana (Firm pose/ side-relaxation pose)

We are people working in the IT industry, and back problem comes as a free gift with it. So can we have another article targeted specifically for the IT industry.

Thanks for your apology Rohitji:) I guess. since we are all getting used to net communication without a set protocol in place we occasionally miscommunicate.

About the list you have given; yes, that is indeed the list for lower back pain.

And I did pass on your message to a tech. staff (though as I did tell you my OE and alacrity to respond is merely a self-imposed courtesy) and this is what he says: "If (the reader is having a problems) with the story on strengthening lower back then there is no problem with that story. He may be facing some cache problem on his local machine."

I myself do not have any problem with the links, despite not knowing the technical niceties I understand you are not getting the sequence of poses right but I don't think other readers appear to have this problem ... But since you have the list right now, after this discussion, here is hoping this set of yoga poses relieves you of your backache...

About your suggestion for a future piece: I am planning a set on cervical problem next month (neck pain is an epidemic with IT pros). But will def. do one exclusive yoga set for the IT industry. Thanks for your suggestion.

Tummy Control

Being in IT industry, our physical movements are too less, either we call up some one or do a online chat. This has resulted in a heavy tummy. Any solution for this one to have it flat as similar to one during in our college days :):):).

Soon, an article on tummy reduction:) But if you have been following our yoga series, you can start try some from them: Navkasana (boat pose), from here Udarakarshanasana or abdominal twist. And definitely kandharsana from the above set. In fact, abdomen becomes slack and sags due to a weak spine which does not support its muscles -- so I would say, the above five poses will trim tummy if you do them regularly.
