Ofcourse all the above points are taken.BPO gives excellent growth opportunity.Improves their communication skills and etiquette, etc. etc.
But is this really creative? What India needs is creative and constructive work.If all the youngsters move towards BPO industry what about independent growth of the country.Let we have more industries, more product exports than services.
Otherwise India will be branded as A Big Call Centres.
Also a call center with more night shifts (which is more in number) ruins the health of the individuals and alters their biological cycle.
India has a good number of young people. We should make best utilization of their strengths.
It all depends on one's set goal. If the goal is firm and have a strong will nothing matters. That person will not think twice and even look towards what is happening in other industries. It is only who changes their goals frequently get into this complex situation.
Dont call this a career choice. Career is not just about how much you make and how fast you grow. It is all about making a decent living while working in your area of your interest. I finished my masters in US worked for a year and came back to India. It is a career choice and I am happy about it. I had a friend who wanted to be a Neuro Surgeon in US because they were the highest paid and not because he loved being one. He never realized his stupid dream. Today 99% of career choices are based on ambition(Minus SKILL) and Financial Scope and result in miserable endings. The best in every field earn sufficiently well. It is always advisable to strive hard to excel in the area of your training rather run in a new direction every day. If you want to be a call center executive, train to be one. Just dont become a call center executive because you want to take a short cut in life.
This is a attitude that i see in a lot of people in the other industries. For your information people working in a call centre also grow, they do become Team Leaders / Managers, they can get into quality, training or in some cases even in HR, Admin and so on, and the salaries of managers can range from 6 lacs to 8 lacs p.a. plus incentives and other benefits which in there own are mind boggling. The opportunites in a call centre are even better if not at par with the other industries. The only problem is to make sure you join a reputed company as i do predict a shake down within the industry in the next 5/6 years thats when only the big players will be left standing. I think Ms. Sheth needs to get her bearings right. Does she realize the kind of investment the bpo industry is bringing into the country? I'm sorry if i seem to be too agressive, but people must realize that by bad mouthing this industry they give it a negative outlook which we really don't need. Instead if the so called experts concentrated on a way to bring the attrition rate of this industry under control you may see that this id the best thing to happen to this country ever. May I request you to kindly through some light on, gCareer Change by Experienced Employees from Manufacturing Sector to IT Services Industriesh. I feel that many are doing some short term courses and jumping but donft know the results on their career??.
It can be very hard to make such choices. This is a very simple case. There is not much difference in money but there is a definite threat to the career.
But there are other cases where you lose your position but money is better. Say a IT lecturer making 25,000 pm offered an entry level post in europe! There you have more money and a chance to get your family over too.
In this particular case how can some one say that the job in the hotel was better than that in a call center!!!!!!!! Aren't there growth opportunities in Call centers? Why have a very biased negative opinion about a callcenter job. There are so many who have made it big starting in the Call centre ranks and are now in responsible positions in hierarchy. I think the article is too biased against the call center. If the person hates hotel management and call center offers him a good break at a better salary , then Why not?? anyway 3 years of life are wasted in studying HOTEL management , why waste the rest of life too??
What made you think that Rohan would be earning less than 10000 in the second year in the call center industry ?? The BPO industry is the fastest growing industry in India (25-30%) moreover the salary growth is also better than any other industry. Call centers utilizes the soft skills acquired by doing a diploma in Hotel Management like politeness when dealing with a customer, be patient, have an caring attitude etc etc. all these skills are also necessary in the BPO industry. Many hotel management people with years of experience are leaving the hotel industry and joining the Banking & BPO industry as they provide better growth oppurtunities, career prospect, culture and remuneration. So its wrong to say that Rohan will do well in the hotel industry only bcoz he has a diploma in hotel mgmt. infact the skills acquired will be utilized through out his life, whichever industry he prefers to work in. My request is not to discourage young people from trying out new industries as they provide better name, fame and money.
