Pay attention to India's riots first
by Nico Davis on Mar 26, 2008 04:52 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

India has riots, strikes and protests very often. It is very interesting that Indians like to hype China "riot" which is nothing actually. Is it because India has a tag "Democrazy", then are India's riots are good things and so Indians worry about China's small troubles?

China is a very stable country. GO to China and have a look.

This is very naive statement. Riots heppen everywhere in the world in all societies. But the moot point is India has a free and strong media where people can voice their opinions and issues can be brought to th eknowledge of the world. What is happening inside Tibet, we just do not have iota of inkling about it. Communism is a sort of political Taliban and first casuality is the individual freedom and dissidence to the communist idea of running the world.

I agree that India has freedom of speech. So you need to use this right to speak for millions and millions of Indian poor people and oppressed people and depressed women first. If you don't clean your own house well and set a model for others, what use of your freedom of speech? most important purpose of freedom of speech is to make people live better physically and spiritually. If freedom of speech is only like animal has right to make voice and can not lift pathetical millions out of predicament, who care your freedom of speech?

Your question is a no brainer. The question here is how does the government deal with minority group wanting independence.

The government has to put them down. US puts down some Puerto Ricans who want independence. The few native Hawaiians who talk about independence gets laughed and scorned at. US will keep on occupying the US Virgin Islands, Guantanamo Bay and others. Canada will not let go of Quebec. Spain and France will not let Basque go independent. UK will always hold onto to Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Falkland Islands and others. The Dutch will keep its grip on Aruba and other terrorities. Russia will not let Chechnya go. Serbia don't want to let Kosovo go. India and Pakistan will always fight over Kashmir. Both Iraq and Turkey will not allow the Kurds to have its own independent state. Japan will not let Okinawa/Ryukyu go. Denmark does not want to loosen its grip on Iceland. The list continues. Do I need to go on???

So what's all the fuss about China wanting to hold onto a large chunk of its territory? Well, if China looses a large part of its land, it will probably become weaker. After all, USSR did help part of Mongolia gain independence a few decades back. Not that the Soviets cared much for the Mongolians. But it did weaken China. Russia obtained Siberia from the Qing dynasty. Perhaps the Soviets wanted more... And now, while the other superpowers are at it, continue keeping a rift between China and Taiwan. Why not, it prevents one giant country from becoming even bigger. Too bad the British and the Portuguese had to give Hong Kong and Macau back to China.

Western media cares nothing about India's riots becasue they don't believe India will be a super power in the future. If that changes, India will suffer the same fate like China today.

Exactly. Westerners or anyone throughout history who is in power, want to hold on to it so it will attack and try to keep potential challengers down.

And anyone who thinks Western media is totally free and unbiased is a fool. You have to dig hard for the truth.

Actually, it is not bad living in China at all. Many Americans, Europeans and Africans and Indians live here and don't want to leave ...

We in the US have far too many hypocrits who can only entertain simplistic reasonings. This article, or rather the reality of Chinese relationship with Tibet over the last 1000 years and attaching faces to China are far too nuanced for them or the comment poster above.

Yes, I have been to China and have seen moneyed foreigners, like myself, living quite comfortably, but that is irrelevant.

And while most westerners are no doubt unaware of the specific nuances of the historic relationship between China and Tibet, that does not mean we cannot recognize oppression when we see it.

Every government, including my own, oppresses certain segments of its population. But to what degree? And for what purpose?

The CCP's current policy in Tibet is essentially the same as my government's policy toward our native American population - 100 years ago: take their land while erasing their religious and cultural heritage, supposedly in the name of nationalistic unity. Yes, we did that and it was terrible.

If I can condemn my own government for its legacy of oppressive behavior towards Native Americans, African Americans and Hispanic Immigrants, not to mention all the victims of our criminal foreign policy adventures, then I can certainly condemn the CCP for it's behavior in Tibet without being a hypocrite.

Human rights are universal, and no government should be allowed to trample them.

When I was in China, I heard a lot from the Chinese themselves about how their politics and society was so complicated and nuanced, that I couldn't possibly understand, let alone criticize their government's policies. To hell with that.

what you say makes sense to a certain degree. This is an right attitude to discuss or criticism. The problem for most Indians here have no knowledge about China and never know what China looks like and open their big mouth to let their so-called opinions flow. All this oponions reflects their ignorance, jealoucy and stupidy but nothing else. Democracy needs give people to vote but does not only mean voting. Freedom of speech does not mean spew rumors and slanders. Finally, do not say you are again China goverment is for defending rights of Chinese. Go to China and talk to as many people as possible to know about them. But do not think you are a Chinese and "defend" their rights.

China is kind of like Oz. I apologzie for the American Literature reference, but it is relevant. China is doing everything it can to "hide" the truth about it's actions in the past, present, and near future. Communism does NOT work when it is as distorted as it is in China. The Chinese act one way towards wealthy corporate Westerners while they suppress Chinese and Tibetans alike. I would rather live in a predictable caste society as it used to be so prevalent in India than a communist debacle as in China where at any moment someone could loose favour with the party leaders - aka party dictators and be imprisoned or killed. It is a proven tactic by the Chinese government. The CCP are NEVER wrong - even when they are BLATANTLY wrong, they can never concede that fact. I hope the Olympics are a huge failure and the world sees how the CCP killed Tibetans for the sake of looking like a "civilized" country. Mao would be disown the CCP and call them an Evil from within.

FREE TIBET, FREE IRAQI KURDS, END TRIBAL WAR, END CUBAN, IRANIAN, and NORTH KOREAN EMBARGOS.

And the United States isn't a dictatorship? It's a bit more inconvenient for the US govt to do certain things, but when the US administration wants something, it will get it. Most Americans/countries belonging to the UN did not want to go to war with Iraq. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and other criminals simply twisted truth and made up stories (weapons of mass destruction, Saddam supporting al-qaida...) in order to scare and raise the anger among common Americans in order to justify their invasion of another nation which posed no real threat to any other nation in the world. Since then, the US has also threatened countries such as Iran, Syria, North Korea... So does it make it ok for those countries to do a pre-emptive strike against the US? After all, the US justified its invasion of Iraq using "pre-emptive strike".

Also, all this recent talk about Tibet being victims and such. In the past, it has been the aggressor and attacked other ethnicities, the Miao for example. Given the chance (like the riots now), it will attack others. So they are really not the hapless victims as they appear.

Bottom line, every nation/tribe/society past present and future have its pros and cons. Just leave others alone doing their thing and take care of your own. Stop criticizing others because no one, including you/your government is perfect. You are not better than me and I'm not better than you. Just relax, chill and try to live peacefully with your fellow human kind.
