I have read through the chain of messages and the article it follows. I hate to ask this, but are we not quite pessimistic? No offense meant, but there is one thing I've noticed here. Neither the so called 'retired expert' author(no offense/disrespect meant) nor the esteemed persons who have commented on it, have touched uopn the topic 'If not Nuclear Energy, then what?' We can blindly say tht the deal is harmful and that we dont need it. But what about the Energy crisis? The population of our country is increasing alarmingly. Neither you are nor I am ready to cut down on Petrol and Diesel consumption by reducing car/bike rides. No industry is reducing its power requirement. No family is switching off and saving valuable power. How do we, in future, power all this? Even as one source of energy - Oil has become more costly, the prices of every commodity and everything imaginable has increased. Our country is losing valuable foreign exchange paying for the Oil price rise. When a single energy source can cause this kindof damage and when the requirement will NEVER decrease, are we not supposed to look for alternate sources or energy? All the developed nations and many of the developing nations are already utilising this source fervently. Where do we stand?

What other option?.Continue what we know and do.That is build more hydro and wind power plants(wherever possible).Try to develop other uranium sources..etc.Manmohan singh is giving the impression with nuclear deal the nergy landscape of india is going to change for better;which is far from truth. The expensive power from imported nuclear reactors cannot make us wealthy.Even with the proposed nuclear deal india will be meeting hardly 5% of it's energy needs from nuclear power.

For running our present nuke plants , we are sacrificing our wings being cut throgh this DEAL!!.Our future Energy security lies in Thorium based Fast reactor technology, as outlined and being implemented by Bhabha and follwers. We have big reserves of Monasite sand , sufficent for Future India. This deal deal categorises Fast reactor technology being developed in our country as Military installation. They can inspect our Fast Reactors on suspision and put a hold on developmentof these reactors, as USA has NO fast reactor programme. If they are giving something we should be very careful before accepting. for example they Gave CRAY computer when we ourselves gained knowledge to build one like that.

Well said. In fact if the deal goes through most of the investment in to these new reactors would come from other countries including the US. If there is any disruption in supply of fuel, it is their investment that would be affected. Like most American companies are fighting to get more H1B visas for Indian software engineers, they would fight to prevent disruptions primarily to safeguard their investments. it is time for us to act smart and take smart decisions and not get embroiled in to irrelevant dogmas

we are supposed to look for alternate sources of energy but at the cost of national security. it would have been more fruitful had the govt pursued deals with oil producing nations as aggressively as it is doing for the nuke deal. Nuke deal doesnt gaurentee any fuel security to india and it opens indian nuclear facilities to foreign inspection. This will have grave implications on india's independent nuclear research. If india has to sustain its current pase of growtn it will have to depend on Oil as nuclear energy alone cannot fulfill this demand. Nuclear energy is a very smalll percentage of the total energy consumption of any country. Its not in the best interest of the country to put its security at risk for an energy resource which is still going to be a very small percentage of its total consumption.

How many more bombs you need to ensure national security? Do you think nuclear wars would be ever fought? If ever that eventuality happens none of us including the US would be left to feel sorry about it. Let India become a global torch bearer for peace, ahimsa and all that is good on this earth. Let us not be fooled in to believing that India would become a great country by possessing more nuclear bombs. India has achieved more national pride because of the progress we have made in software industry than detonating bombs. Nuclear bomb based security is an outdated concept.
Yeah... let us become a full fledged torch bearer for Ahimsa. Get the defence budget down to zero, and divert all Army personnel to build wind powered electricity stations.. Country's energy situation will improve drastically
