In Oct last year one Deep K Datta-Ray supposedly working with the Ministry of External Affairs had also denounced defence research in the media & quite merrily gone on to cite failures in a tone & tenor similar to Bharat Verma. Both MEA & MoD being part of the same GOI - how can they work at cross purpose? Here the author is instructing the govt to force DRDO to seek collaboration with international players. If there were no DRDO - the wheeler dealers would have taken India for a big ride.Even the friends of long standing are trying to get additional pound of flesh on free gifts. For sure lot of people are trying to promote international focus including authors & advisor. What exactly the game plan? Air Cmde Raghubir Singh (Retd)

No problem, Sir. We have five lakh people working in Defence production units. Why can't you produce everything? Dear Sir, our ordnance factories have the "competence" to produce everything yet they can't produce a workable rifle. Even for the Bofors guns, we had to import the shells during the Kargil war.

Bofors Shells have been indigenised & were under production even during Kargil to the best of my knowledge. But can we really stop imports -when THEY (?) want to get these?
There could be many excuses to facilitate imports. Best one is letting DRDO/OF work on the indigenous one- & import say qty 2000 rockets to meet immediate need?
There seems to be nothing much wrong with INSAS which got lot of praise from the Americans in one of joint exercise. DRDO bashing is part of the plan so that imports continue even from countries who outsource these from other countries.
A country which can launch satellites commercially, have IT prowess acclaimed the world over, top class manufacturing facilties including rotary forging, flow forming -can make every thing provided we have faith in ourselves instead of seeking free gifts like ancient mariners.
