The problem of todays politicians are that most of them lack formal qualifications. Mr. Basu has a tremendous educational background which helped him to remain a master in parliamentary democracy. Education which has mde all the difference

Is that question for me? Jyoti Basu deindustrialised West Bengal peacefully. Pol Pot has to resort to violence to deindustrialise Cambodoa (whatever little industry there was). Hence, I think of Jyoti Basu as Brother No. 1 in West Bengal and a Gandhian Pol Pot.

You say that Jyoti Basu deindustrialised West Bengal peacefully. That does say a lot about the people of West Bengal.
And now before furious Bengalis fly of the handle, let me clarify. It is not possible that the people of a nation could have waited with folded hands while the ruling class 'peacefully' dismantled the industries that were running. It is well known that though Basu would not have used 'Pol Pot'ian ruthlessness to crush industries, his services, wily nily to uphold the rights of the workers, did much to crush the industrial environment of the state. However, by no stretch of imagination can you call the fight for worker rights as 'Gandhian'. Especially as it wreaked havoc over a sustained period of twenty five years.
And therefore do I comment that 'Gandhian Pol Pot' is an oxymoron.

Compared to Pol Pot, Jyoti Basu was Gandhian. He used means such as gherao, strike, michhil, gono-andolan, etc. He did not resort to murder and mayhem, although there were a few cases of violence But he used his methods ruthlessly and achieved his objective of deindustrialising West Bengal. So in my thinking, his objectives were the same as those of Pol Pot i.e., exploitation of workers can be stopped if there is no industry. Jyoti Basu was successful!

You guys need to learn a lot about the quality of life of people in WB and Kerala before you can shoot your mouth off most learnedly. Mere presence of huge industries with few people mainly foriegners making shit loads of money to take home to their families while using up the native state resources and increasing local pollution and thus effecting the health of local people and doling out a few coins to the native workers and keep them uninformed nor make them part of management or strategy or profit sharing, while the spoils are shared by a select few with industries mushrooming up all over with < 0.1% of population owning and profiting from these businesses and while the gap between haves and havenots is longer than the great wall of China and the impoverished keep getting poorer and the grass roots are neglected while it serves only a few backboneless software coolies, raising up real estate prices such that a decent house is beyond the reach of the common man or senselessly spend their western licked earned dollars thus raising the inflation on the price of essential goods through the roof for the common man, whose greedy and selfish nature is legendary, and ship abandoning skills that would make a possom proud, Or the rich few who have no religion or patriotism ( these so called 'global citizens') and who have forgotten how to speak their native language in their own homes) and who will sell their country off in a jiffy.. this is your idea of upliftment of people ?
