A couple of points for those who criticize this article: 1. The most critical point raised by Medha et al. is that the US Congress debated this deal for an year and a half while in India there has been very little debate in the Parliament and public. And Medha is right. She is asking for an open debate in this so-called democracy; and you guys cannot tolerate that. 2. You cannot say, "we will sacrifice sovereignty because then the USA will make us rich and powerful" and then still call yourselves a patriot. What kind of a patriot sacrifices sovereignty? 3. Medha and other Leftists DO know more about alternative energy sources than all of you guys put together. Let me just cite one fact - 9% of Tamil Nadu's electricity comes from wind energy and it is growing. 4.About global warming - contrary to popular thinking, energy production is not the leading cause for warming gases. Transportation(cars mainly) IS the leading cause for warming gases. Thus going nuclear does not suddenly make us cause less global warming (unless we have nuclear cars). 5. Quit the fantasy that the USA is somehow trying to balance China by making India powerful. India does not have THAT special a place in American foreign policy. 6. Medha DOES lead a just cause and she IS a people's representative - it is just that you guys do not consider the poor adivasis she works with as people. 7.One guy writes about standing in line for a telephone - what has that got to do with a nuclear deal?

I am one of the few guy who know little bit of electronic & electric stuffs among those people who thinks even ear phone plug has some electronics inside it. I am not telling I am superior, but tell the facts about some commenting about Solar & Wind Mills & their generation. Solar is good for display signs in roads & for some traffic lights in remote areas. Wind mills to get 100 MW, we have to put how many acres & depend on seasons like farmers for wind & we cannot put all the places.
Most of the Tamil Nadu high wind places were already occupied for your information.

So this debate is not anymore about the nuclear deal - the truth is that if a leftist such as Medha says anything, most commenters take the opposing view - not because they know anything about the subject; the leftist likely knows more. Please remember that Kerala, a state governed for the last 50 years by leftist policies is the LEADING state in India in all social indicators - highest literacy; least infant mortality;and more.

Batman, I think you are missing the point - we do not exist for the sake of industry. If a state enjoys good labor protection, good, free health care, free education for all, taxes industry heavily, then that state is much more LIVABLE. If you look at the top livable countries in the world, such as Sweden, Norway or Canada - they ALL implement the above policies. The goal is for humans to live happily - not for some vague economic growth numbers. Amartya Sen calls this unaimed opulence.

hw can humans live happily in poverty. without da economy hw will u generate money to buy food. I would like to follow ur policy of no work and sleep lazily all day on one condition that frm today onwards u ll share half of ur salary with me.. will u do dat????? Show me u r a true commie n share ur salary wimme... All those countries u mentioned above have industries and are hard workin poeple unlike u whose only expertise is nt to work and nt to let others work through ur bandhs n strikes...

Batman, But you DO pay taxes don't you? You pay higher taxes in the western countries than in India by the way. Hence you DO share your pay with others - you just have not thought about it. Taxing industries heavily does go against the owners' benefit - but industries DO still flourish. The countries I mentioned DO flourish - so you are obviously wrong there. A similar debate happened for enforcing minimum wage requirements - 50 years back, in the USA. Everybody said industry will die. Instead they have floursihed in the USA. Read up a little bit.

Kerala is not sole leftist. It is an alternating Govt. Commmunist, congress, communist, congress. It didn't like left to govern a single leader for 30 yrs like fidal castro.
