Great Mr.Gopinath. Can you just tell ua how & why currently most of the doctors and engineers in higher institutions are upper caste. You are once again towing the "merit" bogie. Tell me how a dalit whose 10 generations have not been allowed to study by upper caste can get the same level of understanding and "merit"as a Brahmin whose entire family is enginner/doctors for the last several generation. is that what you call a level playing feild? And what about capitation fees. Where is the "merit " in those?

That is because they have slogged their lives out and come up the hard way, not through the back door. I have seen children of doctors and engineers come up in life and also be utter failures and I will tell you about my case. Being brought up in a BRAHMIN family (and I am very proud about that), my father was just a graduate and my mom is not. Me and my brother are both engineers INSPITE of the screwed up Indian education system. We competed on our strength and came up in a meritorious way and did not beg for freebies, or neither did anyone dole out seats to us or let us in thro the back-door. BTW, do you know that in the engineering admission forms, your father's qualification and mother's qualification are not asked. Perhaps, if you ever fill up one of them, then you will know.

We understand that Dalits were not allowed by the upper caste at one time, that doesn't mean that the learning capacity or the thinking capacity has been wiped out of the minds.
What we need to make now are two things: 1) Instill the urge to read among them 2) Provide financial aid for studying.
It makes no head way for us as a country if we bring in reservations for seats in our Enng and Medical.
Do you understand the gravity, when someone who reads less becomes a doctor and makes a wrong diagonsis on you or some Engineer builds a bad bridge or something.
If you have been able appreciate these things, there wudn't be talk about reservations for seats. Let the merit play the game. Let us help them by providing conducive ambience to grow.

Shoud beggars be encouraged by giving more and more money?
Most people say no to give money/alms to them! Because they will never work as they get habituated of free money!
If the government supports every generation of downtrodden people, is that justice to others?
If a person who gets all the benefits of reservation in studies, job etc., shouldnt he be then declared as "uplifted" and his future generation be not supported through reservation? Otherwise those not gaining the advantage of the reservation system will never get that chance!
Illiteracy does not go and lodge in your genes. So it does not matter whether your past 10 generations were illiterate or not.
The so called 5000 years of oppression does not make an SC/ST or OBC inherently incapable. That is a convinient falsehood being spread around to justify an evil agenda.
In todays' world, the opportunities are available on the basis of economic status of the family. We must support reservations for economically backward. As everybody claims, most of the SC/ST and OBCs are economically backward, so even with economic status based reservation policy they are sure to get the benefits, albeit under a different name. What is the problem with that?
