If the deal is at India's initiative then it is utterly stupid of India to have gone for it as there is nothing of gain for India but a total loss on all counts.
Atomic reactor generated steam is not going to be cost affordable if it is going to be from US.In India nobody would like to live near such a plant. We have high population density and hence we cannot locate these far enough from population centres.
It is most certainly not worth trading our defence capablity for a utterly rubbish expensive unaffordable cost electric power generation reactors from US and then become dependent for future uranium fuel supplies on powers who are already planning to strangle India.
This goes entirely in favour of Pakisan and China who would be going GA GA if India gets roped into this deal as it will weaken India's defence capablity which is what they wish for.
President Bush has proved to be very smart and intelligent in making our PM a complete DODO to sign such a disastrous for India deal.
India just mustn't go for such a suicidal deal.It is the most rotten deal full of peril for India.Dr.Perkovich has made it very clear that he has only love for disarming India to suit US.kkv

I beg to differ with you on a couple of points.
1) Nuclear power is cheap. Countries like France get 80% of their energy from nuclear power. What are the alternatives? Oil? Oil prices have skyrocketed thanks to the mullahs in the middle east. In the future as oil supplies diminish, and demand from growing economies like India and China increase, the cost of oil will only go up.
2) Nuclear engery is safe and clean, at least in relation to oil. Oil, coal, and other fossil fuels are very dirty. They are bad for the environment. Cause a lot of pollution, respiratory problems etc. The only thing that is dangerous from nuclear reactors is the spent nuclear fuel, which can be re-processed or stored in underground containers.
3) The problem is that India, due to bad luck, doesn't have much nuclear fuel. Nuclear fuel, like oil, doesn't grow on trees. Contries like the US have been blessed with a *lot* of nuclear fuel. India has almost none. Perhaps India will finally be able to develop thorium, which India has a lot, reactors. But that is perhaps decades into the future. There is no time. The people of India need energy *now*.
