Some questions
by Anand Raghavan on Aug 09, 2007 05:32 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

It looks fine to feel proud in having such a marvellous facility in India. But I have a question, when the business is Software, why is there a need to have so many grounds and courts for different sports(I can understand library/leadership institute but sports facility). If the intention is to give it to potential/budding sports people at a even a very reasonable and affordable cost for traning, thereby helping India to have top performers in sports, I can appreciate that. But if it is for the employees to recreate for a brief time during work (amateurs using for timepass and which the professionals long for but don't get thro' respective sports associations), does it need world-class sports facility at such a cost on a land given by the govt. at a subsidised rate for their core business. I doubt software professionals with thier kind of overseas client focussed work nature can take become sportsmen by taking time off their work intermittently.
This just came to my mind, no prejudices towards Infy.

if you are looking for charity then ask for it to government of india not to the corporations. Corporations care about their employees and providing such facilities increases employee loyalty and it show the company is not treating its employees like slaves. May be you should be spending your time encouraging any sportsman that you know of instead of trying to discourage corporations from doing good things.

I partly agree wid u dude! Companies certainly do not exist for charity purposes. But then, don't u think that this concept is a 2-way street??? I mean, if u don't believe in GIVING charity, then you have ABSOLUTELY no business ASKING for charity.
If companies don't want to get into the ugly job of encouraging sports in India, that's perfectly alright. But then, they should certainly not ask for free or cheap land, cheap power, tax breaks & other such freebies from the Government. Doesn't asking for all this amount to begging/charity????
By all means, provide sports facilities for your employees - no one has any business questioning that - but not on free/cheap land given by the Government. If these companies & their promoters have self-respect, let them purchase the land at the market price, ask for no freebies and then let them construct watever they want on that land, for their valuable employees(even a brand new TajMahal, if they so wish!)

Hey,
Just to set things and concepptions right, I underwent training at the same campus an year ago and trust me there can be nothing better than the facilities available there to unwind after the hectic day. If we think that people can not make use of the facilities due to work pressure, then better be informed. Infosys has one of the best teams in outdoor/indoor sports as compared to any IT company. Infy mysore campus simply put.........ROCKS!!!

Ananda Raghava, the idea behind so many sporting facilities on the Infosys campus is not to generate Sachin Tendulkars, Bhagawat Chandrasekars or a Dhanaraj Pillai or a Vishwanathan Anand. All these facilities are there to enable the over-worked software minds to relax. R E L A X, see the word sounds so much soothing. All work and no play makes Jack a dumb ass, right.

"Overworked software minds" is an oxymoron... Those words do not gel well... All play and no work would not anyway make a dumb ass into Jack...

Well, Dream Girl, that's why the IT companies are trying to mix work and play. What is your problem? There has to be some play with all the hard work that IT workers do. Otherwise they would just be working on machines like robots.

What you echoed is the attitude difference of the west vs east.

The problem (fortunate or unfortunate) about IT and other related area is that they are purely human resource oriented. And the quality of human resource do matter. One of the reason why US was able to achieve mammoth development during early part of 20th century was that it provided an environment conducive (physical as well as intellectually) for their citizens and prospective immigrants. For example have a look at the geniuses Institute of Advance Studies, Princeton was able to add to its pay roll pre-WII era (http://www.ias.edu/about/noted-figures). I agree, I might be taking an extreme example. But my point is, for India to progress well it has to invest a lot in it's human resource and potential talent. We are abundant in human resource, but pretty scare in most others (land, oil, gold - which the major developed nations have aplenty). While India being a super-power really is a tall order, the only way to come close to achieve that will be to transmogrify our economy into a knowledge hub (akin to the dream of our former president). And it is rather naive and unrealistic to achieve we would have quality work force (worth boosting) sticking around unless you pamper them. This however is not limited to IT (extends to other areas of science and arts). However, IT have momentum, that need to capitalised.
