The situatoin without Quata
by Rahul on Mar 26, 2007 06:18 PM  Permalink

The Indian government cricket team, now is a situation which is the worst ever. And there is no more time that this gov will implement quata system on it.

Do you imagine what will happen when gov. will impose quata system in cricket team.

Problems of team India
by Chinmoy Chakraborty on Mar 26, 2007 06:08 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Problems are

1.BCCI- Top management have not played cricket so how they understand it's promotional activities rather than moneytary profitand in time of crisis they blame on players.
2.Zonal selection committee-Think only about their state or of their choiceable player.
3.Choice of cheif selector(More)- Low rated player only took personal issue and did politics and destroy the team spirit to remove previous captain.(Ganguly could be treated in different way for his bad form)
4.Useless coach could not understand the problem by heart and could not adopt as a real guide and could not make any intellectual idea.
5.Selection of wrong captain.

Ganguly was the neucleous of Indian team and was made it as a team and progressing at a height.More and Chappel removed him for their own interest and destroy the team on 2005.We got the result today.Chappel theory proved wrong because we select most of the seniors for WC,07.Vengsarkar tried but he not get enough time.

Recomendation.
1.Make green pitch.
2.Give a terget to each player and review it after five match.(For example a batsman should score 250 runs after 5 match otherwise he will be removed)
3.For irresponsible out or performance moneytary punishment to be introduced.
4.No player will not get money(match fees) if team lost.Only players get money when team win.Bonus system also be introduce.
5.Don't allow any player to do add.
6.Don't allow media to entertain players.
7.Select real tallented player as selection committee.
8.Allow only cricketers in BCCI top management.
9.Strength reserve bench and search young players from every corner of India by making a selection teamby ex-cricketer.
10.Engage abatting, bawling, filding coach individually and also appoint physio, psycriatist etc.

World Cup Debacle
by Ranjana Samanta on Mar 26, 2007 06:04 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This is with reference Mr Swarup's article on India's world cup debacle. He has rightly pointed out the lack of fitness in our team as compared to other teams and certain other things. But I would like to dwell upon his views on Greg Chappell. %u201C%u2026.his thinking and approach about the game are correct, and given the right mandate, could be good for Indian cricket.%u201D
What are Greg Chappell%u2019s views? %u201CPerform or perish%u201D;%u201D high fitness level%u201D; %u201Cemphasis on fielding%u201D; %u201Cflexibility%u201D; all very fine and every sane minded cricket follower would agree with his philosophy%u2026 but the more important thing is how do you implement it%u2026the process is important, no doubt, but the bottom line is that the results also should be there.
Mr Rahul Swarup (RS) has mentioned team played outstanding cricket in 2005%u2026. but as he has also acknowledged it was below par if you consider the test matches.. particularly glaring was the drawn series against under strength England at home. Winning the ODI series in Pakistan was great as was the demolition of the Lankans at home. But did we really progress any further from there? Lost to West Indies%u2026played poorly in Malaysia%u2026.and in the ICC trophy in India it was very poor. Downhill journey continued in the South Africa tour where the so-called young and fit brigade just could not cope with the South African pace. RS has ignored these results completely. Why? Mr Chappell was very much in charge during this time%u2026
At the same time the media was running the Ganguly circus%u2026he was vilified at the beginning%u2026 was rightly stripped of his captaincy for his poor batting form%u2026but allegations like creating divisions in the team was really shocking and was hard to accept. But with jokers like Kiran More in his side and changing political situation within the Board, Greg Chappell seemed to have complete control over the proceeding and just could not think of giving a fair chance to Ganguly%u2026Rahul Dravid%u2019s role in this whole episode also remained very curious%u2026
Anyway, the massacre in the ODI series at South Africa brought back Ganguly and he did prove his utility in the team in the test series as well as in the subsequent ODI series against Windies and the Lankans..whereas the so called %u201Cmulti-dimensional player%u201D like Pathan gradually lost his form%u2026Chappell and his %u201Dbiomechanics%u201D in the team has succeeded to take away the %u201Cswing%u201D from his bowling which was so much important for India%u2019s success in recent past.
As RS has pointed out that after the failure against Cronje%u2019s team India did progress in last five six years- reached World Cup finals, ICC Trophy finals twice (being joint winner with Srilanka once)- not always in the %u201Csubcontinent%u201D as was Chappell sarcastically mentioning in his latest press conference.
What do we learn from this short history? Not necessarily we would have to follow the Australian methods strictly- the mental set up and approach towards the game are not same for the Australians and for a player in the subcontinent%u2026. We can have success with different methods also as has been shown by Wright-Ganguly combination in between%u2026...creating a permanent insecurity amongst the players in the name of %u2018perform or perish%u2019 may be successful in Australia but its unlikely to have the same result in the socioeconomic background in India where its difficult for simple first class players to earn a living from Cricket. Its not that it means players can%u2019t be omitted even if they don%u2019t perform but proper communication with the players is very important which I don%u2019t think Mr Chappell had with most of his players. John Wright would score much more in this respect.
Second aspect is blooding young guns. Here again Greg Chappell has not really succeeded in blossoming talents like Suresh Raina, Piyush Chawla or Goutam Gambhir- he (and David) has given these young guns too much responsibility too early in their career- these talents could not really grow under their guidance. In the World cup Dinesh Karthik was not given a single chance though Robin Uthappa was not doing well. And RS don%u2019t get into this false sense of pride of having %u201Cplenty of young promising talent in batting and bowling, fit and agile players who, if given the right training and exposure, could be molded into a fighting and competitive unit in 3-5 months%u201D . Remember what Dilip Vengasarker said after watching the Duleep Trophy matches that there is no outstanding talent in the domestic circuit who can really put pressure on the current team (he is right)%u2026its not so easy Mr Swarup it takes time%u2026you need to have a proper system and competitive first class cricket which we don%u2019t have.
On the other side the fielding of the team has worsened day-by-day %u2013 one just can%u2019t blame the seniors only for this- fitness level of players was poor for the whole team. The whole team looked disjointed and lackluster. Who is responsible for this?
We may agree with the Mr Chappell%u2019 directions but his methods have not been successful so far%u2026he has not been able to understand player%u2019s mentality to bring the best out from them.

And more importantly I believe a coach is not so important for a team%u2019s success. Our media have given too much importance to him%u2026.. he was a great cricketer but that does not mean he can also be a coach of a very successful team.

Santanu, NOIDA

To hell with Swarup's article. Greg Chappell should be sacked and we need a Indian coach who can connect and inspire our team and not create rifts or controversies.Bloody all frontline players should be given a performance warning and Sachin/Sehwag should be axed, that would be a reminder for all others. if they don't perform, they would lose their spot. Hope Pawar takes some action and doesnot stoop to Bloody politics on this.

Pressure Pressure Pressure.

It is a fact the Indian Team never perform well under pressure.

I thought Chappell was looking into this aspect?
They dont need to be taught how to play with the bat, bowl or field. All they need to be taught was a sort of cognitive Behavioural Group therapy in Psychological terms.

If Chappell and Dravid have not worked on this aspect, it is waste of resources.

The tax payer can pay less tax if the money diverted is reduced.

CRICKET IS A SPORT!
by Suresh Menon on Mar 26, 2007 06:02 PM  Permalink

Our cricketers, the media, the businesses and we ourselves should regard cricket as a sport, not showbiz.

The spirit of any sporting activity - hard work, dedication, learning from errors, quest to improve upon onself by setting higher physical standards...These are TOTALLY lacking in our heroes who take way too many things for granted.

Drastic change
by dit on Mar 26, 2007 06:02 PM  Permalink

The drastic change should happen in the structure of domestic games. First of all we should change the way Rajnaji is played and make it more dynamic. Also make the pitces for all kinds, not just flat batsman's pitces that we have in india. Then the players wil have exposure to different conditions. Now do not select anybody just because they ball or bat well . Select players on their mental strength too. Their should be drastic change t=in the policy not just in the team.

Mohammad Kaif for Captain

I think Mohammad Kaif should be made next captain as he has proved his leadership abilities by winning under 19 world cup & also guided UP to big wins

He certainly deserves to be part of the team - I always felt he doesn't get enough mentoring or backing. He can easily be moulded into a stable middle order bat and an excellent fielder that can save a lot of runs.

What is your benchmark when you say 'worse'.

As the author has pointed out, there are guys in the playing eleven who have not delivered for so long, and still hanging around - Past records or achievements? To hell with it. Only someone like Dravid can point to test performance of 2 yrs back to justify his backing of Veeru.

Post world cup..
by palghat ramachandran manikantan on Mar 26, 2007 05:52 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Dear All,

I do not know how many of you would agree with me. These are my personal views. i am also terribly upset like the 1 billion people. We indians are highly emotional and we forget the mistakes too very quickly. Yet the team has given us a wonderful opportunity to revive our cricket. We should not take any emotional actions based on the recent debacle. Any action we take should be in the interest of all the one billions fans who inspite of the team's failure continue to support once we come back to normal. Our actions should ensure that we do not get ourselves in the same position in the future. From the outset, we all are upset with the performance of the coach, captain and other senior players. It is time for BCCI to use their heads and not their hearts in taking a decision and arriving at an action plan for the future. Remember, India is the only team which plays more number of matches and this would definitely have a toll on the team. Moreover, the kind of pressure our players/coach go through no other teams go thru (including aus). Changes has to be made and youngseters has to be groomed, but experience should also be there. Remember a new foreign coach would also take his own time to adjust to our culture and the pressure on him would also be high and would definitely take time to deliver. It is better Greg has to be told very clearly that if he does not perform in the next one yr or so, he would have to go. also appoint another foreigner as an assistant coach so that the transition is smooth in case if greg fails, like how the aussies have done. By doing so he would not take time to settle. He would have experience and would have a fair understanding of the culture and system. Sachin has been taking pressure for the last 19 yrs. He might not have been a match winner for us. but his contribution to indian cricket cannot be forgotten. By giving him some rest, he would definitely be able to serve indian cricket for the next 2 to 3 yrs or so. We need seniors to groom youngsters. Remember all the current seniors had someone to groom and guide them. I still belive by appointing an indian coach, we would not go anywhere.

My team would be:

Dravid
Sachin
Saurav
Yuvraj
Kaif
Raina
Zaheer
D.Karthik
Dhoni
Sreesanth
Munaf
Pow ar
Piyush Chawla
(keep an eye on top performers in the domestic side and include them in India A side) and send them to tours like bangladesh, where the so called seniors can play domestic matches or can go back to NCA to correct any faults if they have or can take rest for more serious challenges ahead of us.

Fantastic Analysis!!!

Hi Arjun...This is probably the best analysis which I have seen in ages (99% of the reviews are knee-jerk reactive ones)...Keep up the good work...
"We always clap more for the batsman who scores a 50 with 10 boundaries and 40 dot balls, than the one who does it singles. " one can not be more right than that
