You can't get best of both the worlds!! You are looking for fleet footed youngsters to improve your fielding but when they fail with the bat you dump them peremptorily!
And then you plump for experience which comes at the expense of fielding! Bangladesh and Sri Lanka can field us out of the game by simply bowling a nagging line and prevent singles. so our guys have to go for big shots and thus get out!!
On the other hand we can't prevent singles and twos and thus opposition can put up big scores without taking undue risk. Case in point was Sri Lanka where they went for big shots only after the 42nd over!!

So the solution is a hard tough one : sack all players whose fielding is letting India down. Which includes Kumble, Dravid, Ganguly, Tendulkar and Uthappa!!
Get in people who have the potential to be competent in either batting or bowling and who field very well!!
How many guys in the current indian team are a patch on Azhar, Robin Singh and Ajay Jadeja??
We are a poor fielding outfit and that has cost us this WC!!
Gambhir, Raina, JP Yadav, Venugopal Rao and Kaif are all brilliant fielders. they may not set the house on fire with their batting but then Saqibul, Tamim, Ashraful are not exactly great batsmen, right?? but still beat us comfortably by sticking to basics!!

W can also build our basics right, improve our fitness and fielding standards and do the basics right in running between the wickets!!
Case in point are Hayden and gilchirst; all that they do is tap the balla round and complete impossible singles and then go for big hits!!
Tose who have seen Ganguly, Sehwag and Dravid know that a quick single is out of the equation!!
Eliminate these slow coaches right now, bite the bullet, groom youngsters with talent and India will have a pool of 15 to 20 very good cricketers who will hopefully help them put up decent showing in next WC!!

Ok then how do you explain his failure against Bangla and his 0 against Sri Lanka?? Is Dilhara Fernando the most fearsome fast bowler on earth?? Objectively analyse instead of being biased in favor of your favourite cricketer!! And i'am not saying this cos i'am a Bengali, i say even Ganguly deserves to be dropped from the one day scene!!

i am not just favoring him instead if you go down many messages i am just favouring all of our guys......i just simply mean that he is not spent force to the team......he is in many ways better than other guys......you are looking at narrow perspectives. did yuvraj not score a almost a duck in the same mentioned srilankan match......ok you draw the statistics of not to long but just past 10 matches with respect to bowling batting and fielding all of them and then talk about him.......

Mr. Sandep,
Look at the replies to your bit. You are absolutely right and hit the nail on the head when you said that fielding can win matchs. But look at these morons who are stil supporting Tendulkar and others. This team can never improve with Fans like this. Mumbai will go on fire when these idiots God Tendulkar is dropped and likewise for Kolkatta if that Ganguly(The worst fielder ever in the history of cricket) is dropped. So what we can do is sit back and enjoy the downfall of this team with these fat obese lethargic stars puffing and huffing around. I am really enjoying this both seeing their panting and relishing in these fans disappointment.

You are right. Just because a couple of morons, we are still made to believe that Sachin is the cricketing God, while he is definitely not and was perhaps never either (I say this because Sachin hardly ever won matches for India under difficult conditions which players Steve Waugh has done repeatedly). Unless and until we wake up from our dreams, we won't be able to accept this hard reality. Just like in our religion, in criket also we are following the path of worshipping idols, where idealy we must refrain ourselves from this and set the stage for honorable exit of these senior members (including Sachin, Sourav, Kumble). Instead of boasting of the past, we must look forward to the future, or else its going to be a nightmare to think what might hapen if Sachin goes on to play the World Cup in 2011.

So what great thing you have done for our country? Let all of us know that first, then we can decide who comes from the family of morons. By the way, your choice of language clearly shows what element you are made of and what type of upbringing you have got from your family.

We dont have a Waugh or a Bevan or a Kallis or a Hayden among the list of cricketers of the past or from the current ones. We had / have players who are just a few inning wonders and nothing more than that. We have praised these cricketers and taken them to sky high levels. The grit was never there from any past or current cricketer. That has never been our national character.

"Assumption is the mother of all screw ups"...so goes the saying. Thats what india faced. Assuming that Bangladesh is beatable. I for one still beleive that Bangladesh is beatable but on its day Bangladesh is deadly. They did beat Pakistan in the one of the world cups which provoked Akram to say...." We lost to our brothers..we are happy they won". Only god should save Bangladesh in their next sereis against India ...becos India will maul them.

Comming to the Indian team I personally beleive that the following needs to be done:

1. Choose a captain who can lead the team from front and not buckle under pressure. He neccessarily need not be the best player in the team..He needs to treat every game like war..seething with a passion to win....remember Mike Brearley of England.

2. Sachin, Ganguly, Kumble and Dravid need to be rested and brought back only if they are 100% fit. They have stopped working hard for the money..train the not for cricket but for a cammando attack...like what the special forces go thro...

3. Stop hiring coaches from other countries..Rememeber the saying in Hindi..Ghore chaklegaye lekin Ghulami nahi gaya..we still hang on to foreign coaches. Does not India have good former cricketers who can coach the team.Stop picking stupid white coaches..they have no vision..

4. Pay on performance...performance as in every match..ban all cricketers from promoting brands..and if they have to, then BCCI should be paid 50% of the royalty the players get.

5. Before every sereis the players need to go thro a through business like analysis about what is expected of them. they have to be exposed the basic skills of management which will get in them a spirit of competitiveness..

6. Playing in Ranji trophy should be made mandatory for every test player..playing in English clubs should be made mandatory..

7.Keep them on pins and needles ... dont allow them top take for granted their position in the team...

this should work

I am like one among the billions in cricketing woirld felt or feeling absolutely dejected cas of our guys performance in the Worldcup ......
My suggestions...
1. I do agree our old horses like saurav and sachin didnt perform well whn time really counts .... but look at our bowling attck ?
Kumble, Harbajan - Never in their dreams they spin the ball .....
Zaheer ... ups and downs..
Agarkar - he is bowler after 15 overs not to open..
Sree and Patel -yet to prove thier talent....
Youvi should be our future cap.. and sachin rahul and saurav should support him and promote young players ... AND BCCI SHOULD OPENLY COME OUT SAYING "RAHUL SACHINA DN GANGULY WILL NEVER BE CAP HERAEFETR " WE NEED THIER SUPPORT TO PROMOTE YOUNG PLAYERS...(just to inject to our big 3 that you will play only to promote youngsters)

See, Dhoni has copped a lot of flak. Most of Gilchrist's big innings of late have come when Aus have batted first. Is it that Dhoni gets tired after fielding for 50 overs??
Dhoni is too good a batsman for us to waste him as a wicketkeeper and take 50% of his energy out!!
Most experts believe that Dinesh Karthick is the best wicketkeeper in the country!! So why not hand over the gloves to Karthick and Dhoni comes to open the innings for India?? what say!

Dhoni shud infact open, as in domestic also he was very successful at that position. But alas, if he stops keeping, he will be out of team. He cann't be in team for his batting prowess. Too much competition for him and to have his place in team will be in jeopardy !!!!

some errors in the article
by abhishek bose on Mar 26, 2007 06:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

India won initially when Dravid was captain coz most games happened at home soemthing which the writer has forgotten. England came with half the team, Sri Lanka was in bad shape - these are facts the author has forgotten. it seems the point of view expressed is devoid of hard analysis. We lost not coz we have an old team, we lost coz we didnt play with the committment and agression which we played in 2003. the reason for this atttiude lies in a sense of insecurity amongst players, a weak captain and heavily politicized board which can't look beyond the next election
We should now focus on getting an aggressive captain who can stand by his team and have positive body language yet good cricketign brain - maybe it is time we groomed yuvraj as the next captain - he comes in the middle order, can handle pressure, is an excellent fielder and has the aggression of Sourav. I think he will enjoy the support of some of the old boys as well

We not only need an aggressive (it's only a relative term though, people express aggression in different ways) captain, we need tougher captain mentally and physically. A captian who can move quickly in the field, who can inspire every team members (not divide them).
And also, we need tougher and younger players.
So naturally it should be freed from all regional and mainstream politics.
We should create a sports culture that is not dictated by 3rd rate politicians and people who like political support.

It all comes down to the character of people who controls and play the game.
That means there have to be cultural change.
Traditional Indian culture do not take sports professionally.

They like Gods, Godesses, and they make Gods out of players, loosing the idea that it takes a team to be successful in sports like these, and everyone in the the team is equally important even if they don't hit sixers, they might have other significant roles to play in the team.
A cultural change, that's what Chappel tried to do. But I guess, he miscalculated the time required to fulfill it.

I think the main reason in this WC debacle is "Politics In INDIAN CRICKET".... there should be NO POLITICS at all in cricket. The board should be a private one and should have its own rules and regulations. There should be a contract with the players, as to wich they will be paid ONLY if they perform. All the selectors, VC and president of BCCI should have a minimum qualification( like they should have played more than 50 ODI's or more than 20 Tests ), rather than having a selection committee who asks "WHATS CRICKET ?"....Being an Indian Citizen where CRICKET is like a religion and a fan of Indian Cricket, its our responsibility to take stren steps regarding this. REMOVE POLITICS FROM INDIAN CRICKET.

India very unlucky to lose

i believe india met with a resurgent bangladesh and then with sri lanka who will most likely win the cup. apart frm that our net run-rate was quite good as compared to teams who won two matches in other groups. just the stars haven't favored us.
india is still among the top teams and can beat any other team on any given day.. we should not be angry with a couple of loses!!!

Dear Arup,

I agree with your viewpoint, however I think the person who brought in all the confusion and pulled the reverse gear is our great Vengsarkar. As long as he is there, I do not think too many youngsters will come forward.

When he pulled in the seniors I do not think Dravid could have done anyting, speciallly with two back to back defeats in WI and SA.
