April 1st...
by on Mar 06, 2007 03:14 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I believe that India will come first in its group, and Pakistan 2nd in its group... Therefore, the game will be April 1st- an ideal date for the author who wrote this stupid article...

Insane!!
by Abhilash on Mar 06, 2007 03:08 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I'm trying to get into the mind of the author here. If he/ she tooks pains to write something about cricket ( and lash at the organizing committee at that ) I'd expect someone who knew how to interpret match schedules. How can anyone call themselves a sports journalist if this simple task cannot be performed without dropping the ball?

Absolutely insane... I suggest rediff pulls the article if they want to retain traffic to their site.

Super 8
by hindustani on Mar 06, 2007 03:00 AM  Permalink

Which idiot wrote this article? It appears Brain is not a requirement for job at Rediff. Here is a clear explanation on rules for qualifying for Super 8, straight from ICC website. http://www.icc-cricket.com/icc/rules/wc07_playing_conditions.pdf Please refer to page 20 onwards. It clearly states that team with most wins in the group matches will be placed higher. So If India wins all their group matches it will be slated as B1 and not B2 as this genious describes it to be. Can I get a job Rediff? Oh wait, I may not qualify as I have a regular brain not a genious one like the writer.

Gross Misunderstanding
by sridhar r on Mar 06, 2007 02:38 AM  Permalink

Hello Author,

There seems to be a gross miunderstanding on your part. The indexes given to the team are subject to change depending on whether they progress to the Super 8s or not. If Australia is going to lose all its matches in the first phase, it, obviously, will not qualify in which case, the team that stands the second in that group will qualify and it will be indexed A1 and SAF (if it qualifies) will remain A2.

There seems to be so much ado about the prescribed schedule of the fixtures. I dont see anything wrong in such a format. It is a world cup and that requires more teams must participate. Cricket does not have much popularity in parts of the world such as the USA, and Africas. It is only through these major tournaments that ICC can launch a campaign to broaden the scope of the game in terms of countries participating.

It is also necessary that a major event like the World Cup must be invigorating in the matches played. In order to strike a balance between the two criterion, the ICC has judiciously planned the format of the tournament and it is a resultant of this that the matches became pre-fixed.

Authors of articles would better be advised to understand and learn about what they are writing and more so when it comes to issues like cricket that is being followed in all nuances by most.
