It does not matter who is B2!!!!
by on Mar 06, 2007 04:49 AM  Permalink

Great great piece from the author. Kudos to Rediff, in my view...

Given that all teams play each other in the Super8 league stage, it DOES NOT MATTER who gets labelled B1 and B2. It is a mere convenience to get better TV dollars! If India is B2 and Australia is A1, TV revenues are maximised. For more information, read my blog: http://i3j3cricket.wordpress.com/

The Author and the schedule
by Rajan Bansal on Mar 06, 2007 04:36 AM  Permalink

It seems like the author got upset after finding the ICC schedule and fore-seeing of the Super-Eight stage.

Yes, it does sound a little strange that ICC foresee the two teams qualifying from each group and laid out the schedule accordingly. But I don't understand why the author got so much upset over this.

The author could have written the same article in a calm way rather than using words like "Breaking News", "irony", "eyewash", etc.

Calm down, man. Enjoy the cup!!

Rediff, plese stop it, you have done enough, grow up
by leo smile on Mar 06, 2007 04:32 AM  Permalink

This is absolute crap. I go to the link (as suggested by Mr Fool Author) and don't see any thing remotely said by him in his article.

And what kind of image you are creating, you think by posting India vs Pakistan will fetch you revenue, see what people have to say now.

It is bad, we hope to be world leaders in technology, and this is what you make your people read, something which is not true. Disappointing!!!!!

Grow up Mr Author, or at least grab a beer tonight, and think about what you wrote. You really need to think what you have written.

Liar !!

New age portal journalism
by SureshKumar KG on Mar 06, 2007 04:28 AM  Permalink

I think the author misunderstood the schedule totally.

Here is how it is given in the ICC-site

Group A Group B Group C Group D

1 AUS (1) SL (2) NZ (3) PAK (4)

2 SA (5) IND(8) ENG(7) WI (6)

3 SCOT(12) BEN(11) KEN(10) ZIM (9)

4 NET (16) BER (15) CAN(14) IL (13

We all know what the numbers on the bracket means. But it is the number on left 1, 2 3 and 4 that the author took literally into consideration as a ranking for super eights.

This way,

D1 vs B2 becomes PAK vs IND (on April 15, Sunday)

A1 vs B2 becomes AUS vs IND (on March 31, saturday).

Well, it might as well turn up that way. Who knows? But still, its really silly for someone to write an article based on this.

This is what is called the "new age portal journalism" which means making money by selling ignorance and idiocy! And boy, they are proud of doing just that!

This is probably my first comment in this site. I just couldn't resisit this.

From the BBC site
by hariharan iyer on Mar 06, 2007 04:27 AM  Permalink

The ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean is the biggest in the tournament's history with 16 teams - two more than in 2003 - taking part.
If you thought it was a simple knockout then think again as the tournament involves two group stages and there are seedings to boot.

But help is at hand with our stage-by-stage guide.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Group stage

The 16 teams have been divided into four groups of four and seeded according to their world ranking (at a cut-off date last year when the schedule was announced).
Group A: Australia (1), South Africa (5), Scotland (12), The Netherlands (16)
Group B: Sri Lanka (2), India (8), Bangladesh (11), Bermuda (15)
Group C: New Zealand (3), England (7), Kenya (10), Canada (14)
Group D: Pakistan (4), West Indies (6), Zimbabwe (9), Ireland (13)

TIEBREAKERS
Team with the most wins
Team with the higher net run-rate
Team with the most wickets taken by balls bowled
Winner of the game between two level teams
Draw lots

Each team will play every other team in its group. They will get two points for a win, one point for a tie or no result and nought for a defeat.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the next phase - the Super Eight.

If any teams finish equal on points at the end of the group stages, a series of tiebreakers will be used in order, until one team emerges superior (see right).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Eight

There will be 24 matches in the Super Eight, with each team playing each other, except for the one team they have already faced in the group stage.
The points from that group stage match will be carried forward to their Super Eight tally.

The top four teams from the Super Eight will progress to the semi-finals and for any tiebreakers the criteria listed in the group stage above will be used.

The Super Eight seeding is the same as used in the first round, based on world ranking, with no notice taken of whether a side finishes first or second in a group.

For example, if South Africa win Group A and Australia come second, for the purposes of the Super Eight, South Africa will still be A2 and Australia will be A1.

If, for example, Scotland qualify instead of Australia, Scotland will become A1.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Semi-finals

The team that finishes first in the Super Eight stage will play the team which finished fourth. Second will play third.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The weather

There is a reserve day for every match at the World Cup.

Every effort will be made to complete the match on the scheduled day with any necessary reduction in overs taking place.
Only if the minimum number of overs (20 per side) cannot be bowled on the scheduled day will the match be completed on the reserve day.

Any incomplete matches will be continued the next day from where they left off - a new game will not be started.

THE AUTHOR IS RIGHT. stop it guys
by senthil sabanayagam on Mar 06, 2007 04:26 AM  Permalink

It is indeed true. India will play Pakistan on April 15th at barbados if both teams qualify for the super 8s. It is the match between B2 v D1. India will have the identity tag B2 irrespective of whether it finishes first or second in the group.

This actually a good system and while it might have been influenced by TV ratings, it also helps people to plan in advance if they are travelling to the caribbean to see the games.

For example if you want to see a couple of India games in super 8 stage u know which exactly india will play if it qualifies. This is good for the fan too. Nothing to cry about.

And the author's mistake, if any. was to make it sound like its a breaking news. It has been the case since the day tickets started selling and anyone trying to buy or have bought tickets for the games will know!

A misunderstanding
by SureshKumar KG on Mar 06, 2007 04:14 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I guess there's been a gross misunderstanding of the schedule.

This is how group was written in ICC official site.

Group A Group B Group C Group D

1 Aus (1) SL (2) NZ (3) Pak (4)

2 SA (5) IN (8) ENG (7) WI (6)

3 SCOT(12) BEN(11) KEN(10) ZIM (9)

4 NE(16) BER (15) CA (14) IL (13)

Well we all know what the numbers on the bracket means. But it is the number on the left, 1, 2, 3 and 4 that lead to this horrendous mistake. The author literally took that number into consideration as the real ranking for super eights.

In that way, the super eight match D1 Vs B2 becomes PAK Vs IND and the match is indeed on Sunday.

A1 vs B2 become AUS vs IND!

This is called the "new age portal journalism" which means make money by selling ignorance and idiocy! And boy, they are proud of doing just that!

This is my first comment on this site, couldnt resist it and I wish this to be my last one too.

RE:A misunderstanding
by srinivasa on Mar 06, 2007 04:16 AM  Permalink
The marking A1& A2, B1& B2 etc are based on the rakings of the teams. As per the group B Rankings: Srilanka(#1), India(#2), Bangladesh(#3), Bermuda(#4).

Lets see few combinations:

If SriLanka and India qualify for super8 no matter who stands first in the group , Srilanka will be B1 and India will be B2.

If India and Bangladesh Qualify: India will be B2 and Bangladesh will take position of Srilanka: B1

If India & Bermuda qualify: India will be B2 and Bermuda will take position of Srilanka: B1

If SriLanka and Bangladesh Qualify: SriLanka will be B1 and Bangladesh will take position of India: B2

If Srilanka & Bermuda qualify: SriLanka will be B1 and Bermuda will take position of India: B2

If Bermuda and BanglaDesh Qualify: Bangladesh will be B1 as its ranked 3 in group and Bermuda will be B2 as its ranked #4.

The same holds true in all groups.

Got it guys???????

I got this link from one of the posting belo...see this as proof:

The author was right:
Hey I have confirmed the thing mentioned by rediff.com
I have seen the ICC schedule 7.5 hours back (9:40PM IST), then i was able to see India Vs Pakistan in braces below B2 Vs D1.
But now, at 5:30AM (IST), the names of the countries have gone off from the super eight stage.
So i guess all the confusion is due to the ICC website changing the schedule twice (The 2nd change, change to the original state, was done after the article got posted in rediff.com). Did anybody else notice this?
