Honestly tell me guys could Shivani or any other highly successful Indian American could have stayed back in India and achieved what they have done? To use their intelligence for their country, the country should also be interested! Given the wreckless reservation policy and the least respect for meritocracy, only a fool would like to fight the system in India and, if any energy left, try to uplift the country. Tell me with so many people staying in India how many have brought laurels to India in Science and engineering? Even most of the nobel laureates(hardly 4 !) India boasts of are not Indians in the true sense.
About the contribution of Indian-Americans to India, I would like to ask those ignorants to keep their mouths shut if they don't know!

usa has always appreciated brahmans. even when they did no have real hindu brahamans, they appreciated the boston brahmans who tried their best to live upto being brahmans, like adopting veggie lifestyle. of c ourse, there is no substitute for the real mccoy. if india is not careful, soon all hindu brahamans, just plain tired of unappreciative india, could flock to usa. and then it is all over for india.
achievements are good but the crazy electronic media will go tracing her indian roots, interview with panwallah, dhobi etc plus a few ancient relatives thrown in.
We need similar events in India to bring out talents of the youth. But it should be done seriously keeping in mind that indigenous innovations can do lots of good to Indian society. More fund should be spend and utilized efficiently.
the idea that indians should not go abroad if they love india is ridiculous. that way nobody should change their state or even city also.
i am sure if these guys go to avg indian school or college, they can see the pathetic facilities available there. to hope for cutting edge research in these conditions, with the excessive bureaucratic mentality is not possible at all.

I quite agree Tarun with your logic. A proud Bengali should live in Bengal, a Proud Tamilian in Tamilnadu etc. If take it to the extremes, no villager should migrate to the towns. India has always been a land that has accepted migrants and so has America comparatively recently. Regarding Shivai, no one should say she cjhose to migrate. Her father/mother migrated. Just because she was born in States, she may not have 'Indianness'. It's only those jelous people who have not been able to migrate and win laurels comment adversely about people like Shivani. India should be improving facilities right from the primary stage, so that we do not need reservations, and thus improve the opportunities so that people stay in India.

Right about the fact that one should not go to the extreme in branding people...
But again, what is the factor that makes a person patriotic to his country?
Birth? then those who are born in other countries would not have patriotism for the countries of their parents...
Lineage? upto which generation...?
Let me give you an example... Monty Panesar plays for the British cricket team... he plays against india... is he a patriot? should he be considered as an indian or as a person with indian roots??
There are fine lines between patriotism and selfishness...
intel chip is developed by an indian Mr dhar now if the award is given to Indian-American whats the news here... y our media thinks the benchmark for any appreciation comes from western countries oscar syndrome

It make sense to publish as any award, even if given in India, involving tough competition needs to be appreciated and here rediff has done right in publishing this. co-incidentally it was American of Indian origin who got the first price. Where is wrong mentallty seen?
